[The occurrence of aflatoxins in some components and complete feed mixtures for pigs].

The feed components and complete feed mixtures used in pig breeding and fattening in June 1978 were examined qualitatively by the silica-gel thin-layer chromatographic method, and quantitatively by the method after Velasco. The object of the examination was the occurrence of aflatoxins. On the whole, 104 feed samples were taken and subjected to the laboratory examination; this total number included 77 samples (74.0%) coming from 24 farms and 27 samples (26.0%) from eight feed plants in the South Moravian region. The presence of aflatoxins was detected in 14 samples of the examined feeds, i. e.

An Elemental Diet Reduces Chylous Ascites of Patients Undergoing Pancreatoduodenectomy in the Setting of Early Enteral Feeding.

OBJECTIVES: The elemental diet (ED) is a formula to support nutritional status without increasing chylous burden. This study evaluates the efficacy of early ED feeding after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective phase II study of consecutive patients who underwent PD with early ED feeding was conducted. Patient backgrounds, surgical outcomes, and ED feeding tolerability were compared with a historical cohort of 74 PD patients with early enteral feeding of a low residue diet (LRD). RESULTS: The ED group comprised 104 patients. No patient in the ED group discontinued

Gastric feeding intolerance is not caused by mucosal ischemia measured by intragastric air tonometry in the critically ill.

BACKGROUND: Gastric mucosal ischemia may be a risk factor for gastrointestinal intolerance to early feeding in the critically ill. AIMS: To study intragastric PCO2 air tonometry and gastric residual volumes (GRV) before and after the start of gastric feeding. METHODS: This is a two-center study in intensive care units of a university and teaching hospital. Twenty-nine critically ill, consecutive and consenting patients scheduled to start gastric feeding were studied after insertion of a gastric tonometry catheter and prior to and after start of gastric feeding (500 ml over 1 h), when clinica

Splanchnic Tissue Oxygenation for Predicting Feeding Tolerance in Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: Feeding intolerance is very frequent in preterm infants, and the development of an early effective biomarker for its prediction could be useful for carrying out a proper feeding strategy. Our aim was to evaluate if the measurement of splanchnic regional oxygenation (rSO2S) and splanchnic fractional oxygen extraction ratio (FOES) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is correlated with the time needed to achieve full enteral feeding and if it can predict the development of feeding intolerance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured rSO2S and FOES in preterm infants 25 ± 0 to 31 ± 6 w

Alterations in fluid, electrolytes and other serum chemistry values and their relations with enteral tube feeding in acute brain infarction patients.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to examine whether fluid and electrolyte levels are significantly altered after enteral tube feeding in acute brain infarction patients. BACKGROUND: Results on the water and electrolyte complications associated with enteral tube feeding are inconsistent and this is partly because of uncontrolled disease-related variables. DESIGN: Non-experimental design (retrospective study). METHODS: This study was conducted by retrospectively reviewing the medical records of 85 tube-fed patients. RESULTS: Mean values of major serum electrolytes (sodium, potas

Are adolescents who were breast-fed less likely to be overweight? Analyses of sibling pairs to reduce confounding.

BACKGROUND: Cohort analyses suggesting that breast-feeding protects against being overweight have been criticized for inadequately controlling for confounding associated with the self-selection of feeding practices. METHODS: Using nationally representative U.S. data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (1994-1996), we performed traditional cohort analyses (n = 11,998) using logistic regression to estimate the relation between breast-feeding and adolescent overweight (body mass index > or =85 percentile, based on year 2000 CDC growth charts), controlling for known potentia

[Early oral feeding does not pose a risk after upper gastrointestinal surgeries].

Introduction: Assessing the nutritional and physical status of patients with malignant diseases, is an essential element in their prehabilitation and rehabilitation. Initiating early oral feeding is an important part of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol. However, there is a lack of data regarding the application of this feeding method after upper gastrointestinal tract surgeries. Objective: To demonstrate that early oral feeding has no disadvantages in this patient population, we compared the data of patients treated by early oral feeding method between January 2020 and July

Human milk consumption and full enteral feeding among infants who weigh </= 1250 grams.

OBJECTIVE: Establishing enteral feeding is an important goal in the care of very low birth weight infants. In such infants, receipt of >/=50 mL/kg per day human milk during hospitalization has been associated with shorter time to full enteral feeding. The objective of this study was to determine whether high proportions (>/=50%) of human milk during feeding advancement are associated with shorter time to full enteral feeding and improved feeding tolerance. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of very low birth weight infants (n = 127) who were grouped into low (<50%; n = 34) and high

Enteral Feeding During Therapeutic Hypothermia for Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy in Neonates: A Multicentre Study from Italy and Belgium.

Background: Enteral feeding during therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains heterogeneous across centres because of concerns regarding feeding intolerance and the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Evidence regarding optimal feeding initiation and advancement remains limited. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of a multicentre retrospective cohort of infants with HIE treated with TH at two tertiary neonatal intensive care units in Italy and Belgium between 2011 and 2024. We included survivors with complete nutritional data, aware that this re

Introduction of Complementary Foods for Children with Down Syndrome: Parent and Physician Experiences.

AIMS: Children with Down syndrome are at risk for feeding difficulties due to medical comorbidities and associated developmental delays, yet there are no peer-reviewed published standards to guide families with feeding progression. This study explored family experiences introducing complementary foods (e.g., purees, table food) for children with Down syndrome. A secondary aim was to describe primary care provider (PCP) training on early progression of feeding for children with Down syndrome and investigate the recommendations they gave families. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with twenty

A practical approach to classifying and managing feeding difficulties.

Many young children are thought by their parents to eat poorly. Although the majority of these children are mildly affected, a small percentage have a serious feeding disorder. Nevertheless, even mildly affected children whose anxious parents adopt inappropriate feeding practices may experience consequences. Therefore, pediatricians must take all parental concerns seriously and offer appropriate guidance. This requires a workable classification of feeding problems and a systematic approach. The classification and approach we describe incorporate more recent considerations by specialists, both

Infant and baby feeding and the development of the maxillofacial complex based on own observations and the literature.

The method and technique of feeding a young child affect the shape of the maxillofacial complex. Breastfeeding is the recommended method of feeding in the first six months of life. It is encouraged to continue natural feeding in later months, simultaneously developing other food extraction techniques. The correct formation of the stomatognathic system is a result of the correct organization of the motor patterns during feeding.

Comparison of Three Modalities of Feeding in Preterm Infants ≤32 Weeks and ≤1,250 G: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Early establishment of enteral feeds is desirable in very preterm infants, but it may be associated with feeding intolerance. Several feeding methods have been studied with no strong evidence to suggest the preferred feeding method to establish early full enteral feeds. We studied three modalities of feeding in preterm infants ≤32 weeks and ≤1,250 g: continuous infusion (CI), intermittent bolus by infusion (IBI), and intermittent bolus by gravity (IBG) for their effect on time to reach full enteral feeds of 180 mL/kg/d. STUDY DESIGN: We randomized 146 infants, 49 infants in each CI…
