BACKGROUND: Stress fractures of the femoral neck are not common in clinical practice, and simultaneous stress fractures of the femoral neck and proximal femur of the unilateral femur are even more rare. We introduce a case of this type of fracture that was treated in our department, analyze the causes, and review similar stress fractures reported in the literature to provide references for the diagnosis and treatment of such conditions.
CASE SUMMARY: A 62-year-old female, with a free medical history, was admitted to the hospital mainly due to pain in the right hip and worsening pain in the ri

We present a case of two patients with a distal femur shaft fracture due to a high velocity trauma. Both were treated with a distal femur nail (DFN). After mobilisation a fracture of the neck of the femur was diagnosed which was not seen in the x-rays on admission. In this paper we discuss whether this is a typical constellation of ipsilateral fractures of the neck of the femur in femur shaft fractures or a complication of implantation of a DFN. Immediately after operative treatment of a femur shaft fracture specifically after high velocity trauma or in polytraumatized patients an x-ray of the

To explore the relationship between dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQS) and Cd exposure both alone and in combination with osteoporosis and bone mineral density (BMD) among postmenopausal women. In total, 4920 postmenopausal women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included in this cross-sectional study. Weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to assess the association between DAQS and Cd exposure with femur neck BMD, total femur BMD, osteoporosis among postmenopausal women, respectively, and the coexistence effect of DAQS and Cd expos

Risk factors for fracture of the neck of the femur are relatively well established, but those for fracture at other sites are little studied. In this large population study we explore the role of age, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity on the risk of fracture at seven sites in postmenopausal women. As part of the Million Women Study, 1,154,821 postmenopausal UK women with a mean age of 56.0 (SD 4.8) years provided health and lifestyle data at recruitment in 1996 to 2001. All participants were linked to National Health Service (NHS) hospital records for day-case or overnight admission

OBJECTIVE: Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory rheumatic disease that mainly affects the axial spine. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are the main complications of AS. Vitamin D has functions on the immune system. In this study, we aimed to compare vitamin D levels and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) values between AS patients and controls.
METHODS: A total of 68 patients with axial AS and 34 healthy controls were enrolled in this study conducted between March 2018 and May 2018. Vitamin D concentrations, BMD values, disease activity, back mobility, functionality and radiologic damage were e

BACKGROUND: The presence of screw tunnels in the femoral neck is a problem for patients with proximal femoral fractures after removal of internal fixation. The question of how much does the existence of the screw tunnels affect the strength of the femur and whether the patient needs to be protected with an adjunctive device has been controversial. The objective of this finite element analysis was to determine (1) whether the screw tunnels affects normal weight bearing after removal of internal fixation of a proximal femur fracture, (2) which screw tunnels parameters affect the weight bearing c

BACKGROUND: Femoral head resurfacing is a popular procedure for younger active hip replacement patients. Whilst the current generation of metal-on-metal resurfacing arthroplasties appear to have cured the osteolysis problems that plagued earlier resurfacing implants, fracture of the femoral head and aseptic loosening are still factors of concern in its survivorship. Several studies have shown a tendency towards failure in resurfaced femurs where the implant has been set at a varus angle. This work aims to investigate the influence of varus-valgus orientation on load transfer within the resurfa

The anthropometry of the proximal femur holds great clinical significance in designing implants and prostheses for proximal femoral fractures and hip joint arthroplasties. Surgical fixation with a properly matched prosthesis plays a crucial role in improving long-term treatment outcomes and preventing post-operative complications such as osteolysis with aseptic loosening and increased load. The femur is also one of the most commonest used bones for stature estimation. Often during forensic investigations, only fragmented remains of femur are found available from which femoral length is estimat

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement as a result of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has been treated traditionally with a proximal femoral osteotomy, but open and arthroscopic femoral osteoplasty is becoming increasingly popular. Cam lesions result from excess bone primarily at the anterolateral femoral head-neck junction. SCFEs result from posterior and inferior slippage of the femoral epiphysis, causing the metaphysis to move anteriorly. This study's purpose was to compare fourth-generation sawbones standard femurs with SCFE femurs to determine whether bone resection from the an

Objective: This study aimed to develop a novel method for opportunistically screening osteoporosis by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) from CT images. We addressed the limitations of commercially available software and introduced texture analysis using Hounsfield units (HU) as an alternative approach. Methods: A total of 458 samples (296 patients) were selected from a dataset of 1320 cases (782 patients) between 1 March 2013, and 30 August 2022. BMD measurements were obtained from the ilium, femoral neck, intertrochanteric region of both femurs, and L1-L5 and sacrum spine body. The region

BACKGROUND: When performing femoral reconstruction in patients with Crowe type IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), anatomical deformity presents many technical challenges to orthopedic surgeons. The false acetabulum is suggested to influence load transmission and femoral development. The aim of this study was to describe the morphological features of dysplastic femurs in Crowe type IV DDH and further evaluate the potential effect of the false acetabulum on morphological features and medullary canal of Crowe type IV femurs.
METHODS: We analyzed preoperative computed tomography scans f

Little is known about differences in the therapeutic efficacy of denosumab in subjects with and without rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study compares the changes in bone mineral density (BMD) between RA patients and controls without RA who had been treated with denosumab for 2 years for postmenopausal osteoporosis. A total of 82 RA patients and 64 controls were enrolled, who were refractory to selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) or bisphosphonates and completed the treatment of denosumab 60 mg for 2 years. The efficacy of denosumab in RA patients and controls was assessed using are

Bilateral avascular necrosis (AVN) following postictal bilateral fracture neck of the femur is a rare occurrence. Here, we report a case of bilateral AVN of the femoral head following an asynchronous bilateral postictal fracture neck of the femur. A 16-year-old autistic boy presented with left hip pain following an episode of seizures and radiographs showed Delbet type II fracture neck of the left femur. This was treated by closed reduction and cancellous screw fixation and skeletal traction for 6 weeks. At 3 months, follow-up radiograph showed union of the fracture, but he had developed segme

Femoroplasty, the augmentation of the proximal femur, has been shown in biomechanical studies to increase the energy required to produce a fracture and therefore may reduce the risk of such injuries. The purpose of our study was to test the hypotheses that: (1) 15 mL of cement was sufficient to mechanically augment the proximal femur, (2) there was no difference in augmentation effect between cement placement in the intertrochanteric region and in the femoral neck, and (3) cement placement in the femoral neck would predispose the proximal femur to an intertrochanteric fracture, whereas trochan

Aging is associated with an increased risk of fragility fractures at the hip, resulting from a loss of bone mass. While this loss is typically reported as a decreased mean areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in the proximal femur or the femoral neck, its evolution is spatially inhomogeneous, which might also contribute to the increased risk of fractures. Yet, little is known about the evolution of BMD distribution and cortical thickness with age in the proximal femur. We propose a 3D spatio-temporal atlas of the proximal femur to identify regions with high BMD losses and cortical thinning. The a

Bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and the neck of femur and serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), alkaline phosphatase, calcium, albumin, creatinine and phosphate were measured in a group of 166 postmenopausal women (30-79 years) attending a bone clinic for bone density measurements. Four subjects with suspected primary hyperparathyroidism were excluded from analysis. BMD at the lumbar spine was correlated with body mass index (BMI) (r = 0.278, p = 0.0003), age (r = -0.194, p = 0.0134) and serum 25OHD (r = 0.188, p = 0.0167). BMD at

Height has been associated with increased risk of fracture of the neck of femur. However, information on the association of height with fractures at other sites is limited and conflicting. A total of 796,081 postmenopausal women, who reported on health and lifestyle factors including a history of previous fractures and osteoporosis, were followed for 8 years for incident fracture at various sites by record linkage to National Health Service hospital admission data. Adjusted relative risks of fracture at different sites per 10-cm increase in height were estimated using Cox regression. Numbers w

Femoral neck fractures account for 46% of the proximal femur fractures in children; however, the overall incidence of proximal femur fractures in children is <1%. Pathologic causes for proximal femur fractures include local or global causes of bone weakness, such as metabolic bone conditions or neoplastic causes. Nonpathologic causes of femur fractures are caused almost exclusively by high-energy trauma and are readily identified. Nonaccidental injury leading to femoral neck fracture is unusual and can be challenging to diagnose when the medical history is not forthcoming. Femoral neck fractur
