Evaluation of the Individual, Relationship, and Financial Benefits of Juntos en Pareja for Spanish-Speaking Latine Couples.

Latine couples often face high levels of financial stress, which can significantly strain romantic relationships. Yet few programs are designed to address both financial and relational distress for this population. Juntos en Pareja (JEP) is a socio-culturally responsive program designed to address these challenges by providing relationship and financial education to Spanish-speaking Latine couples. JEP is a cultural and linguistic adaptation of the evidence-based program TOGETHER. This study evaluates JEP's effectiveness by comparing pre- and post-workshop outcomes among Latine couples in JEP …

Improving outcomes of patients with advanced prostate cancer through a better understanding of clinical factors contributing to financial toxicity: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Patients with advanced prostate cancer (aPC) often face significant treatment-related financial hardship. Given the critical role non-physician clinicians play in helping patients access prescribed treatments, we sought to explore their perspectives on factors contributing to treatment-related financial toxicity. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with non-physician clinicians who care for patients with aPC. We used purposive sampling to capture diverse perspectives across practice types (academic, community), and settings (rural, urban, suburban). Participants describe

Economic shocks and mental health in Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Economic shocks, that is, events that cause a sudden loss of income for households, are common in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet their impact on mental health remains understudied. While such shocks may contribute to depression and anxiety, evidence remains limited, particularly in resource-poor settings where mental health disorders are underdiagnosed and undertreated. This study examines the causal impact of economic shocks on depression and anxiety in a low-income context. METHODS: We used nationally representative panel data over two waves from Banglades

Increasing ratio of opportunistic infections associated with sunshine exposure and economic level burdening Chinese inflammatory bowel disease hospitalized patients: the first nationwide survey from 2014 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of opportunistic infections (OIs) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in conjunction with the use of biologics/immunosuppressive agents has garnered attention. However, there is a dearth of research on OIs in Mainland China. This study seeks to evaluate the national ratio trend of OIs in IBD and elucidate the influence of economic and climate factors on IBD patients with OIs and their outcomes. METHODS: The nationwide data was obtained from the Inpatient medical record home page via the Health Statistics and Information Reporting System (HSRS). Patients diagn

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence and economic burden of keratoconus in the United States. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Patients enrolled in Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) who were diagnosed with keratoconus between 2016 and 2019 were included. The data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vision and Eye Health Surveillance System (VEHSS) were analyzed. The crude prevalence rates (national and statewise) were obtained from the database and extrapolated to estimate the keratoconus case count in the United States. The keratoc

Examining COVID-19 pandemic-related economic and household stress and its association with mental health, alcohol, and substance use in a national sample of Latinx sexual minority and heterosexual adults.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority adults of Latinx descent faced compounded intersectional stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic across socioeconomic and health domains. Latinx people have experienced some of the highest COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and mortality rates in the United States in addition to significant economic challenges. Yet, current data have not observed the unique pandemic-related experiences of sexual minority Latinx (SML) adults. We examined sexual identity differences in economic and household stress, social support, mental health symptomatology (depression, anxiety), a

Understanding the financial burden of incomplete abortion: An analysis of the out-of-pocket expenditure on postabortion care in eight public-sector health care facilities in Dakar, Senegal.

Timely access to treatment is essential for women when they experience abortion complications. Out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure is a known barrier to health care access. In 2018, we assessed the financial burden of accessing postabortion care (PAC) borne by women in Dakar, Senegal, where studies estimate that half of poor women with complications obtain PAC. We interviewed 729 women following discharge from PAC. Women reported expenditures on transportation, admission, treatment, family planning, hospitalisation, complementary tests, prescriptions, other medicines and materials. We compare wome

Shaping sustainable paths for HIV/AIDS funding: a review and reminder.

The fight against human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has made significant progress over the past decades, yet sustainable funding remains a critical challenge. Despite advances in medical treatments and prevention methods, the financial resources needed to combat the epidemic consistently face uncertainties and shortfalls. As of 2023, approximately 37.7 million people are living with HIV/AIDS globally, with 1.5 million new infections reported annually. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the hardest-hit region, accounting for 67% of the global HIV burden. This pa

Caregiver Perspectives for Pediatric Patients with Acute Kidney Injury on Dialysis: A Narrative Review.

Caregivers of pediatric patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) undergoing dialysis face a wide range of challenges that significantly impact their physical, emotional, social, and financial well-being. This narrative review explores the complexities of caregiving for children with AKI, focusing on caregiver burden and its implications for both families and patients. The clinical education required for caregivers presents a steep learning curve, as they must acquire technical and medical knowledge to perform dialysis effectively, often with limited support and inconsistent training protocols.

A Longitudinal Observational Mixed Methods Cohort Study of the Psychosocial and Financial Costs of Cancer Care for Pediatric Families in the Maritimes, Canada.

IntroductionApproximately 1,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in Canada each year. Treatment places significant financial and psychosocial burdens on families through direct medical costs and indirect costs such as travel and lost income. These burdens can negatively affect parental quality of life. In the Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island), all pediatric cancer care is centralized in Nova Scotia, requiring many families to travel long distances for treatment. However, the impact of this travel burden on Maritime families has not yet been studied.MethodsA pro

The effects of a financial navigation intervention on financial toxicity among patients with breast cancer in China: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity (FT) is a common issue faced by breast cancer patients worldwide. Although financial navigation (FN) is a promising approach to alleviate FT, its effectiveness in China's context remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of a FN intervention on FT, cost-related health literacy (CRHL), shared decision-making (SDM) ability, and perceived stress of patients with breast cancer. METHODS: This was a cluster randomized controlled trial. Participants were randomized to the FN group or control group (n = 41 per group). Outcomes including FT (primary out

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the stressful events of life within 1 year preceding onset or exacerbation of skin disease in patients of psoriasis vulgaris and chronic urticaria.
