Comparison of fixation disparity curve variables measured with the Sheedy Disparometer and the Wesson Fixation Disparity Card.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest differences in the fixation disparity curves obtained with the Sheedy Disparometer and the Wesson Fixation Disparity Card, the two most commonly used methods for measuring fixation disparity. In one study the investigators proposed that the differences do not exist for subgroups divided by phoria. The purpose of this paper is to try to clarify this issue by use of two large sets of data. METHODS: Dissociated phorias were measured by the von Graefe method. Fixation disparity curves were plotted using the Disparometer and the Wesson card. RESULTS: Type I fi

[Quantifying the stimulus parameters in the neck torsion test].

Cervically induced eye movements can be observed when the trunk is rotated and the head fixed. In most test situations, rotating chair motion and head fixation are carried out manually. As a result, specific and non-specific sources of error are involved in these procedures that hamper the reproducibility of test conditions. A system is described that provides quantifiable and reproducible, electronically controlled movements of the rotating chair. Ramp and rectangular stimulus profiles are achieved by infrared optical gate devices on the chair axis. Various processor-controlled sequences of a

Eye and head contribution to gaze at near through multifocals: the usable field of view.

Presbyopes show that for targets presented within a 28 degrees clear field of view, gaze is accomplished by head and eye movements with head movements making an average contribution of 24%. A clear field of view which incorporates the factor of segment width provides an underestimation because of the factor of head movements. By including the effect of head movements, a fixed segment width provides a much wider clear field of view which we term the usable field of view.

Disparity-induced vergence responses in normal and strabismic subjects.

Latencies of vergence responses were obtained by presenting vertical line stimuli for 0.5 sec to the fovea of one eye and to various retinal locations of the other eye of four subjects with normal binocular vision, one exotrope with normal retinal correspondence, and four esotropes with anomalous correspondence. Vergence latencies were larger for squinters than nonsquinters and were especially long for the squinters with anomalous correspondence. For three of the four anomalous corresponders, the direction of the vergence movement (convergence or divergence) was based on the location of the st

About a particular interaction of the fixating eye in strabismic amblyopia after treatment.

2 cases of strabismic amblyopia which were successfully treated are examined. Later on, a slight myopia appeared in the fixating eye only, while the amblyopic eye remained practically emmetropic. The 2 patients had to wear monocular myopic correction, otherwise the visual acuity of the other eye would have been reduced below the visus (without correction) of the fixating but myopic eye. A third case was reported of a hypermetropic patient with a right amblyopic eye and a left fixating but myopic eye. After the appearance of myopic lesions in the dominating eye, pleoptical treatment was success

Clinical significance of rebound nystagmus in neuro-otological diagnosis.

The present study is concerned with a clinical analysis of 17 patients with "rebound nystagmus" examined over a period of three years. All of them have shown a short duration second degree nystagmus evoked by changes in the direction of fixation, from the lateral to straight ahead gaze. This nystagmus was a fixation nystagmus, that is to say, it was enhanced in the presence of active optic fixation and inhibited in its absence. Almost all the patients (16 out of 17) had cerebellar signs on neurological examination (in one subject rebound nystagmus was the first sign suggesting cerebellar invol

On the relationship between strabismic amblyopia and eccentric fixation.

Landolt C and grating acuity are compared with that normally expected of the eccentric fixation region for 10 strabismic amblyopes. The findings suggest that 2 populations of amblyopes exist. For some amblyopes visual function is that predicted of the eccentric region used for fixation, whereas for other amblyopes there is a further pathological reduction in visual function. These findings may have an important bearing on the type of orthoptic treatment used for amblyopia.

A 13-year followup of a case of Wallenberg's syndrome: first-person account and ocular motor abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: We present a 13-year followup of a case of Wallenberg's syndrome, including a first-person account and ocular motor abnormalities. METHODS: Objective infrared eye-tracking systems were used to record horizontal and vertical eye movements binocularly under a variety of conditions. RESULTS: Fixation in the dark along the midline remained as before, with vestibular jerk nystagmus continuously present. While saccades and pursuit to a visual target also remained the same as found earlier, fixation was somewhat worse, revealing not only saccadic intrusions but also a prominent right-je

The influence of age on adaptation of disparity vergence and phoria.

A paucity of research exists to investigate whether the normal aging process influences the ability to adapt disparity vergence and phoria. Vergence eye movements and dissociated phoria were recorded from 49 healthy subjects (ages 20-70years) using an objective eye movement tracking system. Four-degree vergence responses were modified using a double-step protocol. Dynamics of vergence were quantified via peak velocity. The phoria adaptation experiment measured the magnitude (net change in phoria level) and rate (magnitude divided by the time constant) of phoria adaption during 5min of sustaine

Detection of visuomotor dysfunction in mild traumatic brain injury using binocular retinal polarization scanning.

OBJECTIVE: The head and intraocular trauma tool (HITT) is a portable, binocular retinal polarization scanner (RPS) that detects ocular fixation with high precision to assess visuomotor function. We conducted a pilot evaluation of a prototype binocular RPS device to evaluate alterations in fixation stability, binocularity (convergence), and saccadic latency after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). METHODS: Two groups were studied prospectively: (1) single observation study of mTBI patients in a hospital ER (n = 7) and age-matched controls (n = 43); (2) high-school athletes preseason (n = 28),

Clinical Outcomes and Intraocular Pressure Control After Scleral-glued Intraocular Lens Insertion in Eyes With Pseudoexfoliation.

PURPOSE: To analyze clinical outcomes and intraocular pressure control following scleral-glued intraocular lens (IOL) fixation in eyes with pseudoexfoliation (PXF). METHODS: A retrospective chart review and outcome analysis was performed on a series of eyes undergoing glue-assisted, scleral-fixated (scleral-glued) IOL insertion in the setting of PXF and poor or absent capsular support. RESULTS: In total, 28 eyes were included in the study. The indications for scleral-glued IOL fixation included late endocapsular IOL dislocation (21/28, 75%), exchange for iris-fixated IOL due to complication

Spontaneous Background and Procedure-Related Microscopic Findings and Common Artifacts in Ocular Tissues of Laboratory Animals in Ocular Studies.

Identification of test article-related microscopic findings in ocular toxicology studies requires a working knowledge of the artifacts and procedure-related or background findings commonly encountered in such studies. The objective of this article is to provide a mini-atlas of the artifacts and procedure-related or spontaneous background findings commonly observed in ocular tissues from animals in toxicology studies of ocular drug candidates. Artifacts in the eye are often related to collection or fixation procedures and include swelling and vacuolation of lens fibers, separation of the neuror

Is an iris claw IOL a good option for correcting surgically induced aphakia in children? A review of the literature and illustrative case study.

Refractive correction of aphakia in childhood can be a complex management issue following lensectomy for congenital cataract or ectopia lentis. Some children have inadequate capsular support to allow an 'in the bag' or sulcus fixated intra-ocular lens (IOL). In such cases, options for refractive correction include spectacles, contact lenses, or surgically fixed IOLs. Many methods of IOL fixation have been described, but none are widely adopted in children. In recent years, the iris-fixated Artisan Aphakic IOL has gained popularity, but there is still significant concern about the rate of corne

Oculomotor Abnormalities during Reading in the Offspring of Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Eye movement patterns during reading are well defined and documented. Each eye movement ends up in a fixation point, which allows the brain to process the incoming information and program the following saccade. In this work, we investigated whether eye movement alterations during a reading task might be already present in middle-aged, cognitively normal offspring of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (O-LOAD). METHODS: 18 O-LOAD and 18 age-matched healthy individuals with no family history of LOAD participated in the study. Participants were seated in front of a 20-inch LCD monitor,

Keep your head down: Maintaining gait stability in challenging conditions.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral vision often deteriorates with age, disrupting our ability to maintain normal locomotion. Laboratory based studies have shown that lower visual field loss, in particular, is associated with changes in gaze and gait behaviour whilst walking and this, in turn, increases the risk of falling in the elderly. Separately, gaze and gait behaviours change and fall risk increases when walking over complex surfaces. It seems probable, but has not yet been established, that these challenges to stability interact. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does loss of the lower visual field affect gaz

Expert - Non-expert differences in visual behaviour during alpine slalom skiing.

The aim of this study was to investigate visual behaviour of expert and non-expert ski athletes during an alpine slalom. Fourteen non-experts and five expert slalom skiers completed an alpine slalom course in an indoor ski slope while wearing a head-mounted eye tracking device. Experts completed the slalom clearly faster than non-experts, but no significant difference was found in timing and position of the turn initiation. Although both groups already looked at future obstacles approximately 0,5s before passing the upcoming pole, the higher speed of experts implied that they shifted gaze spat
