Evolutionary history as the main driver of cohesive groups' hierarchical organization in flea-mammal interaction networks.

Cohesive species groups (components, sectors, modules, and subgraphs) represent parts of an ecological network with a substantially higher density of interactions than the surrounding parts. We investigated cohesive groups in 108 flea-mammal networks from all over the world and tested whether these groups are hierarchically organized, that is, whether groups at the higher level are composed of groups at the lower level, thus representing a network structure. We measured congruence between groups, using congruence coefficients, and asked whether the extent of hierarchical organization differs b

Environmental and host- and parasite-associated drivers of the flea-mammal interaction network structure differ between biogeographic realms.

We evaluated the effects of climatic factors, host and parasite species richness, and their phylogenetic and functional diversity on the nestedness and modularity of mammal-flea interaction networks from four biogeographic realms. We also tested for the associations between pure structural network dissimilarity (i.e., dissimilarity between host-sharing-by-fleas networks, Dh, or dissimilarity between flea-sharing-by-hosts networks, Df) and environmental dissimilarity, and host and flea compositional, phylogenetic, and functional dissimilarities. We asked whether (a) the relative effects of thes

Records of fleas (Siphonaptera) from Delaware.

We present an annotated checklist of fleas (Siphonaptera) known to occur in the state of Delaware based on an examination of Siphonaptera collections at the University of Delaware and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, as well as new specimens of fleas we collected from wildlife, other hosts, and tick flags. We review published records and compile them herein with our new records, which include 3 species previously unreported from Delaware. With these additions, there are now 18 flea species from 19 avian and mammalian hosts documented from Delaware.

A bottom-up proteomics workflow for a system containing multiple organisms.

RATIONALE: Discovery proteomics has been popularized to be essential in the investigator's biological toolbox. Many biological problems involve the interplay of multiple organisms. Herein, a bottom-up proteomics workflow was developed to study a system containing multiple organisms to promote a thorough understanding of how each interacts with the others. METHODS: A label-free quantification proteomics workflow was developed with nanoscale liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (nanoLC-MS/MS). This protocol describes a bottom-up proteomics workflow used to study differentia

Serological evidence of Yersinia pestis infection in rodents and carnivores in Northwestern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Plague may recur after several decades in its endemic regions; therefore, the continuous monitoring of wildlife is essential, even when no human cases are reported in the old foci. The present study was conducted to monitor rodents and their ectoparasites as well as carnivores to learn about the epidemiology of plague infection in an old focus of Iran. METHODOLOGY: The present study was conducted from 2019 to 2020 in Takestan county of Qazvin Province in northwestern Iran. Rodents were caught using live traps, and their fleas were separated. Blood and spleen specimens were taken f

Identification of microbial taxa present in Ctenocephalides felis (cat flea) reveals widespread co-infection and associations with vector phylogeny.

BACKGROUND: Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea, is the most common ectoparasite of cats and dogs worldwide. As a cause of flea allergy dermatitis and a vector for two genera of zoonotic pathogens (Bartonella and Rickettsia spp.), the effect of the C. felis microbiome on pathogen transmission and vector survival is of substantial medical importance to both human and veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to assay the pathogenic and commensal eubacterial microbial communities of individual C. felis from multiple geographic locations and analyze these findings by location, qPCR pathogen

Fleas from common rodent species are an unlikely source of plague (Yersinia pestis) in managed forests of northwestern Oregon, USA.

Anthropogenic environmental change can alter the susceptibility of wildlife hosts to pathogens and provide an opportunity for disease emergence. We explored Yersinia pestis prevalence in fleas from three rodent species inhabiting intensively managed forests in Oregon, USA. Y. pestis was not detected in the 145 fleas (3 families and 9 species) collected. Our results suggest a low public health threat from plague in this anthropogenically altered landscape and contribute to regional Y. pestis monitoring efforts.

Evidence of Brucella melitensis DNA in the Microbiome of Ctenocephalides felis from Pet Cats in Greece.

Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are the most prevalent ectoparasites of pet animals with cosmopolitan distribution, obligatory hematophagous, and may prey on humans to receive bloodmeals. We studied the microbiota of 100 flea-pools, containing C. felis, and collected from equal number of cats and dogs in the region of Attica, Greece, including Athens. The 16S metagenomics technique detected Brucella spp. nucleotide sequence that was identified as Brucella melitensis DNA by a real-time PCR, in five flea-pools, corresponding to five cats, one owned and the remaining four stray, residing in sem

Zoonotic Bacteria in Fleas Parasitizing Common Voles, Northwestern Spain.

We detected Francisella tularensis and Bartonella spp. in fleas parasitizing common voles (Microtus arvalis) from northwestern Spain; mean prevalence was 6.1% for F. tularensis and 51% for Bartonella spp. Contrasted vector-host associations in the prevalence of these bacteria suggest that fleas have distinct roles in the transmission cycle of each pathogen in nature.

Plague management of prairie dog colonies: degree and duration of deltamethrin flea control.

Plague is a flea-borne disease of mammalian hosts. On the grasslands of western North America, plague stifles populations of Cynomys spp. prairie dogs (PDs). To manage plague, PD burrows are treated with 0.05% deltamethrin dust that can suppress flea numbers and plague transmission. Here, we evaluate the degree and duration of deltamethrin flea control with three PD species at six sites across four U.S. states. Data were simultaneously collected at paired plots. Burrows from one randomly assigned member of each pair were treated with deltamethrin; non-treated plots served as experimental basel

Surveillance study of vector species on board passenger ships, risk factors related to infestations.

BACKGROUND: Passenger ships provide conditions suitable for the survival and growth of pest populations. Arthropods and rodents can gain access directly from the ships' open spaces, can be carried in shiploads, or can be found on humans or animals as ectoparasites. Vectors on board ships may contaminate stored foods, transmit illness on board, or, introduce diseases in new areas. Pest species, ship areas facilitating infestations, and different risk factors related to infestations were identified in 21 ferries. METHODS: 486 traps for insects and rodents were placed in 21 ferries. Archives of

[Tungiasis in Bangou (West Cameroon)].

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitosis caused by penetration into the skin of the sand or chigger flea, Tunga penetrans. The epidemiology in Cameroon of this disease, often associated with poverty, is unknown. Accordingly, in August 2008, we conducted a study in Bangou, in Western Cameroon, among a sample of 403 people, divided in 111 families. All data were collected and analyzed with Epi-Info 6.4 software. The prevalence in this population was 32.7%, with infestation more frequent in males (P = 0.013), mostly in children aged 1 to 5 years. The most frequent clinical features were simple inflammator
