Quantifying and improving flood resilience of urban drainage systems based on socio-ecological criteria.

In this paper, a new framework is developed for evaluating the resilience of urban drainage systems (UDSs) under floods by proposing and quantifying some technical and socio-ecological (SE) criteria. The proposed criteria are used to quantify the seven principles of building resilience in socio-ecological systems. The criteria mainly focus on preserving diversity and multiplicity in a UDS, managing variables that gradually change over time (slow variables), improving structural and functional connectivity, maintaining system adaptability, encouraging learning, broadening participation, and pro…

Continuous fixation of dissolved arsenite from flooded soil by cooperating ferrihydrite with Geobacter sulfurreducens.

The fixed arsenic in soil is easy to be released into the aquatic environment in the form of arsenite (As(III)) with high toxicity and mobility due to the eutrophication of environment under anaerobic conditions. However, As(III) is difficult to be fixed in situ continuously by traditional methods, especially for the most efficient fixation method by iron ores. Based on that Fe(II) could promote the fixation of As(III), this study investigated the possibility that Geobacter sulfurreducens (G. sulfurreducens) cooperates with ferrihydrite to fix released As(III) from flooded soil in a glass colu

RAPT: A Robust Attack Path Tracing Algorithm to Mitigate SYN-Flood DDoS Cyberattacks.

In the recent past, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have become more abundant and present one of the most serious security threats. In a DDoS attack, the attacker controls a botnet of daemons residing in vulnerable hosts that send a significant amount of traffic to flood the victim or the network infrastructure. In this paper, a common type of DDoS attacks known as "TCP SYN-Flood" is studied. This type of attack uses spoofed Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for SYN packets by exploiting the weakness in Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) 3-Way handshake used by the TCP/IP suite of

Flooding and emergency department visits: Effect modification by the CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) is a census-based metric that includes 15 socioeconomic and demographic factors split into four themes relevant to disaster planning, response, and recovery. Using CDC/ATSDR SVI, health outcomes, and remote sensing data, we sought to understand the differences in the occurrence of overall and cause-specific emergency department (ED) visits before and after a 2017 flood event in Texas following Hurricane Harvey, modified by different levels of social vul

Emergency department visits associated with satellite observed flooding during and following Hurricane Harvey.

BACKGROUND: Flooding following heavy rains precipitated by hurricanes has been shown to impact the health of people. Earth observations can be used to identify inundation extents for subsequent analysis of health risks associated with flooding at a fine spatio-temporal scale. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate emergency department (ED) visits before, during, and following flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 in Texas. METHODS: A controlled before and after design was employed using 2016-2018 ED visits from flooded and non-flooded census tracts. ED visits between landfall of the hurricane and rece

Understanding reproductive health challenges during a flood: insights from Belkuchi Upazila, Bangladesh.

Background: Bangladesh is exposed to natural hazards such as floods, cyclones and droughts. As such, its health systems and health infrastructure are exposed to recurrent disasters. Research studying the impacts of natural disasters on reproductive health in particular is lacking. This research contributes to this knowledge gap by studying the challenges related to menstrual regulation and post-abortion care at both the facility and community levels, and the care-seeking patterns of pregnant women during the 2016 flood in Belkuchi, Bangladesh. Methods: Six government-run primary health care fa…

A restatement of the natural science evidence concerning catchment-based 'natural' flood management in the UK.

Flooding is a very costly natural hazard in the UK and is expected to increase further under future climate change scenarios. Flood defences are commonly deployed to protect communities and property from flooding, but in recent years flood management policy has looked towards solutions that seek to mitigate flood risk at flood-prone sites through targeted interventions throughout the catchment, sometimes using techniques which involve working with natural processes. This paper describes a project to provide a succinct summary of the natural science evidence base concerning the effectiveness of

Comparison of microbial communities across sections of a corroding sewer pipe and the effects of wastewater flooding.

This study investigated the variation in microbially induced concrete corrosion communities at different circumferential locations of a real sewer pipe and the effects of a wastewater flooding event on the community. Three distinct microbial community groups were found in different corrosion samples. The physico-chemical properties of the corrosion layers and the microbial communities were distinct for the cross-sectional positions within the pipe, ie ceiling, wall and tidal zones. The microbial communities detected from the same positions in the pipe were consistent over the length of the pip

Effects of rumination on child and adolescent depressive reactions to a natural disaster: the 2010 Nashville flood.

The current longitudinal study tested hypotheses about Nolen-Hoeksema's (1987, 1991) response styles theory (RST) of depression in a sample of child and adolescent public school students. Wave 1 measures of rumination, distraction, and depression were obtained 6 months prior to the 2010 Nashville flood. Similar measures plus a measure of flood-related stressors were administered at Wave 2, approximately ten days after students returned to school after the flood. Results revealed an indirect effect of preflood rumination on postflood depressive symptoms via the intervening variable of postflood

Seroprevalence of leptospirosis and risk factor analysis in flood-prone rural areas in Lao PDR.

A cross-sectional seroprevalence study on leptospirosis, using microscopic agglutination test (MAT), was conducted in rural villages in Khammouane Province, Lao People's Democratic Republic, in December 2006. The overall prevalence of leptospiral infection among 406 subjects was 23.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 19.7-28.0%). Independent risk factors for the infection, identified by multivariate logistic regression, were male sex (odds ratio [OR], 1.92; 95% CI: 1.24-2.98), recent flooding on one's own property (OR, 2.12; 95% CI: 1.25-3.58), and collecting wood in the forest (OR, 1.90; 95% CI:

PTSD symptoms in children and adolescents 28 months after a flood: age and gender differences.

The present study examined the prevalence and predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD) in a sample of 533 students (aged 11 to 21), 28 months after the 1997 Flood in southwestern Poland. The results show that 18% of the participants met all diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Based on hierarchical multiple regression analyses, PTSD criteria symptoms were positively correlated with the degree of exposure to trauma experienced during the disaster. A three-way interaction of trauma, age, and gender showed that more PTSD symptoms were observed among the younger participants and girls

The burning question: does burning before flooding lower methyl mercury production and bioaccumulation?

Production of methyl mercury (MeHg) is elevated in new hydroelectric reservoirs because organic carbon stimulates methylation of inorganic mercury (Hg) stored in the terrestrial system. This can cause adverse health in fish and in organisms that eat fish. We expected that burning vegetation before flooding would decrease the amount of Hg and organic carbon and thereby lower MeHg production. We conducted a replicated field experiment to investigate the effects of burning vegetation and soil before flooding on MeHg production and bioaccumulation. Vegetation and soil were added to mesocosms in th

An historical review of malaria, kala-azar and filariasis in Bangladesh in relation to the Flood Action Plan.

This paper reviews the evidence of a link between flood control and vector-borne disease in Bengal/Bangladesh. Malaria is historically associated with reduced flooding and embankment construction in the flood plains of Bengal. The land west and south of the Jamuna river was highly malarious in 1916 but is not so today. The lands east of the Jamuna now have a higher, though still small, risk. The reduction in health risk can be attributed to the intensification of land use and human population density. Although there are many mosquito species, the abundance of the former malaria vector appears
