Hookworm Folliculitis: Report of Two Cases of Cutaneous Larva Migrans With Histologically Identified Follicular Involvement.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is an ectoparasitic infestation predominantly caused by nematodes, specifically Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum , found in tropical and subtropical regions. Although follicular involvement by the parasite is a rare manifestation, with approximately 20 cases reported in the English literature, its pathogenesis remains underexplored. The present study reports 2 cases of CLM presenting with follicular involvement in patients with pruritic lesions following travel to subtropical areas. The first of them is a 32-year-old woman who developed an abdominal

Susceptibilities of Malassezia strains from pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis and seborrheic dermatitis to antifungal drugs.

The human pathogenic yeast genus Malassezia may be an etiological agent of skin disorders and has received considerable attention from derma … as significantly different from those of the three skin diseases (pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis and seborrheic dermatitis). Our results suggested that the MIC analysis of the four antifungal drugs would be helpful in preventing drug resistance in the clinical screening of Malassezia and choosing better antifungal drugs to treat Malassezia-asso …

Perceived aetiological factors of folliculitis keloidalis nuchae (acne keloidalis) and treatment options among Nigerian men.

BACKGROUND: Folliculitis keloidalis nuchae (FKN) also known as acne keloidalis is the commonest form of scarring alopecia occurring in African males. It occurs mostly in individuals of African descent. Its prevalence ranges from 1·6% to 16·1%. FKN is multifactorial in origin: androgens, inflammation, trauma, ingrowing hairs and secondary infection have all been implicated in its aetiology. The reason for its occurrence in the occipital region is unclear although elevated androgens in the scalp have been suggested. The occurrence of huge keloidal-like scars in the affected area has earned the n…

Folliculitis decalvans and human T cell lymphotropic virus type I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) can be associated with either adult T-cell leukemia or HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), a chronic progressive immune-mediated myelopathy. Skin manifestations such as xerosis and erythema may be associated with HAM/TSP. Infective dermatitis due to Staphylococcus aureus or beta-hemolytic Streptococcus has recently been described as a marker for HTLV-I infection and as a probable risk factor for the development of adult T-cell leukemia and lymphoma in Jamaican children. We report a case of folliculitis decalvans, …

A Practical Algorithm for the Management of Superficial Folliculitis of the Scalp: 10 Years of Clinical and Dermoscopy Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Superficial folliculitis of the scalp (SFS) is a common complaint in clinical practice, and initial presentation may be difficult to differentiate as they may appear very similar to each other. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this thesis is to describe the pathologies that occur clinically as folliculitis of the scalp, identify their causes and characteristics and create a standardized classification. METHODS: This is a retrospective clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological study over 10 years of dermatologic consultations. Only individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of SFS (updated …

Epidermal psoriasiform hyperplasia, an unrecognized sign of folliculitis decalvans: A histological study of 26 patients.

BACKGROUND: Follicular hyperkeratosis along with hyperplasia of the follicular and interfollicular epithelia are major histopathological characteristics of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The presence of an occasional thickening of lesional skin in some folliculitis decalvans (FD) patients and histological similarities between FD and HS led us to look for epidermal hyperplasia and follicular hyperkeratosis in FD patients. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We performed a retrospective histological analysis of 26 patients with FD. OBJECTIVE: We sought to find out whether the presence of hyperplasia of the i…

Clinical and Laboratory Features of Six Cases of Candida and Dermatophyte Folliculitis and a Review of Published Studies.

Although some studies have investigated the epidemiological characteristics of Malassezia folliculitis (MF), little is known about the clinical features and laboratory characteristics of folliculitis caused by other fungi. In this prospective study, 158 patients with folliculitis were identified, and cytological and mycological examinations were performed. The positive fungal cultures were confirmed using conventional methods, ITS sequencing and HWP1 analysis. Additionally, an in vitro antifungal susceptibility test was performed. Of 158 patients with folliculitis, 65 (41.1 %) were found to ha…

Epidemiological characteristics of Malassezia folliculitis and use of the May-Grünwald-Giemsa stain to diagnose the infection.

Various bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral pathogens can cause folliculitis, which is often mistakenly treated with antibiotics for months or even years. A laboratory diagnosis is required before therapy can be planned. Here, we describe the prevalence and risk factors, as well as the clinical, cytological, and mycological characteristics, of patients with Malassezia folliculitis (MF) in Adana, Turkey. We also report the treatment responses of the MF patients and describe the Malassezia spp. using culture-based molecular methods. Cytological examinations were performed in 264 folliculitis…

Development of folliculitis and pyoderma gangrenosum in association with abdominal pain in a patient following treatment with isotretinoin.

A 19-year-old man with severe acne developed extensive scalp folliculitis and later superficial pyoderma gangrenosum following treatment with isotretinoin. A cyclical neutropenia was noted and bone marrow findings suggested myelodysplasia. We believe that isotretinoin was implicated in the development of overt symptoms in this patient whose haematological condition was previously asymptomatic.

Chronic Folliculitis Associated with Ovine gammaherpesvirus 2-Induced Infections in Dairy Cows from Southern Brazil.

Ovine gammaherpesvirus 2 (OvGHV2) is a Macavirus and the cause of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF) in susceptible mammali … virus 6 (BoGHV6), bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoAHV1), and poxvirus. Histopathology revealed chronic folliculitis in all biopsies. IHC detected intralesional, intracytoplasmic MCFV antigens in most (83.3%; 5/6) of the cutaneous lesions with folliculitis. These skin lesions showed a strong T-cell response, macrophage clusters, and caspase-positive follicular ker …

[Pityriasis amiantacea and folliculitis decalvans : An unusual manifestation associated with antitumor necrosis factor-α therapy].

We report on a 21-year-old woman with a 3-year history of crusts and erosions on her scalp that had appeared after starting treatment with adalimumab due to Crohn's disease. By clinicopathological correlation pityriasis amiantacea with underlying folliculitis decalvans was diagnosed. Topical and systemic antibiotic treatment showed rapid response. The occurrence of pityriasis amiantacea in folliculitis decalvans associated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitor therapy is remarkable and highlights the ambivalent role of TNF-α in diseases with immunological dysfunctions in combination wit…

Recalcitrant eosinophilic pustular folliculitis of Ofuji with palmoplantar pustulosis: dramatic response to narrowband UVB phototherapy.

Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis of Ofuji is a recalcitrant disease typified by non-infective eosinophilic spongiosis involving the infundibular region of the hair follicle. We present a case of a 49-year-old Chinese man with known palmoplantar pustulosis and acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau which was promptly resolved with methotrexate therapy. He returned with an erythematous papulopustular eruption with coalescence to annular plaques, occurring over the face, chest and back with active palmoplantar pustulation. Histology from skin biopsy of the palmar lesion was in keeping with palmop…

Enhanced bioenergetic cellular activity with metabolic switch to aerobic glycolysis in Keloid and Folliculitis Keloidalis Nuchae.

Keloid scars and folliculitis keloidalis nuchae (FKN) are benign fibroproliferative dermal lesions of unknown aetiology and ill-defined treatment, which typically present in genetically susceptible individuals. Their pathognomonic hallmarks include local aggressive invasive behaviour plus high recurrence post-therapy. In view of this, we investigated proliferative and key parameters of bioenergetic cellular characteristics of site-specific keloid-derived fibroblasts (intra(centre)- and peri(margin)-lesional) and FKN compared to normal skin and normal flat non-hypertrophic scar fibroblasts as n…
