Intraosseous ganglia of the foot.

The purpose of this article is to review the English language medical literature involving intraosseous ganglia and to report the rare finding of a histologically proven intraosseous ganglion found in the calcaneus. Intraosseous ganglia are rare lesions of bone seen in the metaphyses or epiphyses of long bones. The lesion is more common in the lower extremity; however, very few have been reported in the foot. The lesion is usually in close proximity to a joint, but rarely has any communication with it. The intact intraosseous ganglion is smooth and round in shape, with an opalescent color indi…

[Foot problems in the elderly].

Foot problems in the geriatric patient are multiple and sometimes complex. The choices in treatment are frequently restricted because of contraindications for surgery. Common foot problems are common in the elderly patient, too, but in addition there is a specific pathology of this group of patients. Inexpensive, but institutionalized routine foot care is an essential medical need of the elderly to improve the quality of life.

Reconstruction of the burned foot.

Burns of the feet pose unique and difficult problems in initial management, reconstruction, and the attainment of long-term functional results. The primary reconstructive goals for this region are unimpeded ambulation and weightbearing. These objectives can be achieved by adherence to established principles of wound management, a clear delineation of the reconstructive requirements of the foot, and a team approach toward attaining these goals.

The foot in Apert syndrome.

Foot deformity in Apert syndrome is very characteristic and predictable. Progressive synostosis occurs on what is presumably an unsegmented cartilaginous mass. The first ray shortens with medial deviation of the great toe, secondary to growth abnormality and a delta phalanx. The two phalanx digits characteristically go on to fusion, with maintenance of minimal motion at the metatarsal phalangeal joints. The midfoot and hindfoot progress to characteristic fusion in a supinated position. There is prominence of the fifth metatarsal with callosities under the fifth and third metatarsal heads in al…

Ewing's sarcoma of the foot.

Ewing's sarcoma is a rare, malignant neoplasm that is most common in children and adolescents. It is common in both the axial and appendicular skeleton but has been rarely reported in the foot. Historically, treatment has consisted of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The roll of surgery in the management of these lesions have recently been "rediscovered" and depends on the anatomic location. The purpose of this paper is to discuss five consecutive cases of Ewing's Sarcoma of the forefoot treated with below-the-knee amputation for local tumor control. Four of the five patients also underwent…

Foot care for the aging.

Age-related changes in the feet include alterations in the skin, which becomes dry, inelastic, and cool and often exhibits hyperkeratoses. Thickened and brittle toenails complicate pedicure. The contour of the foot widens with age and may have increased forefoot height in the presence of toe deformities. Sensory acuity diminishes, as does joint mobility, muscle-force production, and ability to withstand stress. The elderly person's gait is slower and less forceful, with shorter strides. Visual loss affects footwear donning and toenail trimming. Older individuals on a limited income are less li…

[Fractures of the child's foot].

The incidence of fractures of the foot in childhood depends considerably upon whether the site of fracture is the hindfoot, midfoot or forefoot. Fractures of the talus or calcaneus are rare. However, in the literature there are a significant number of publications on these fractures from the point of view of arthrosis problems or aseptic necrosis. In contrast, only few reports have been published about mid- or forefoot fractures in children. Generally, treatment problems and long-term prognosis are believed to be unproblematic. However, follow-up studies of these fractures have shown that some…
