INTRODUCTION: Hydatid cyst is a parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus that is mostly found in the Mediterranean and Gulf States regions. Hydatid cysts usually arise in the liver and lungs but rarely occur in the forearm.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: In this report, we present a rare case of a solitary intramuscular forearm hydatid cyst in a 32-year-old woman. The cyst exhibited positive radiological findings and was treated surgically, leading to a complete resolution of the patient's symptoms with no history of recurrence.
DISCUSSION: This case was unique because although the patient presented …

PURPOSE: Allografts play an important role in tendon, ligament, and bone reconstruction surgery, particularly when suitable available autologous tissue is limited. Enthusiasm for the use of allografts in reconstructive orthopedic surgery has increased over the past decade, with an increase in allograft use in a variety of procedures. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the various applications and indications for the use of allografts in reconstructive surgical procedures of the elbow and forearm.
METHODS: MEDLINE/PubMed was searched from 1990 through October 2018 for stud…

Scars from self-inflicted wounds, referred to as "hesitation marks," are usually linear, flat, poorly oriented, white in color, and often located on the forearm. Many patients do not undergo treatment for these due to limited available modalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the pinhole method using a 10,600 nm carbon dioxide (CO2) laser for treating hesitation marks on the forearm. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with hesitation marks treated by the pinhole method from March 2010 to April 2014. Eleven patients with hesitation marks (m…

Solitary cysticercosis of muscle is a rare disease causing diagnostic dilemma. Cysticercosis commonly affects the central nervous system and other tissues by dissemination imposing a serious health problem. We report this rare presentation of solitary cysticercosis of flexor digitorum superficialis in a five year old otherwise healthy child. The fine needle aspiration cytology and histopathological diagnosis were inconclusive but ultrasonography of the muscle clinched the diagnosis.

PURPOSE: To determine the outcomes of surgical management of aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) in the hand, wrist, and forearm.
METHODS: The medical records of 11 patients undergoing surgical treatment of ABCs distal to the elbow from 1994 to 2011 with at least 12 months follow-up were reviewed retrospectively. Mean follow-up was 29 months (range, 13-56 months). There were 7 males and 4 females. Four lesions presented in the radius, 3 in the ulna, 2 in the metacarpals, and 2 in the phalanges.
RESULTS: Ten patients underwent wide unroofing and intralesional curettage with 9 undergoing associated h…

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury is a significant problem affecting more than 1 million people around the world each year and poses major challenges to the plastic and reconstructive surgeon. For high upper extremity nerve injuries, distal muscle reinnervation and functional outcomes are generally poor. Tendon transfer has been the traditional reconstructive option in these cases to restore hand function. More recently, nerve transfers have been described in the forearm and hand to recover hand and wrist function and critical sensation.
METHODS: This article reviews the surgical principles…

This paper describes a series of cases with severe hand injury that required antebrachial flaps as part of treatment, and their functional results. The clinical records of patients with a diagnosis of traumatic hand injury and major skin cover losses, reconstructed with a reverse-flow forearm flap, were reviewed. The following variables were studied: type of flap, sex, age, mechanism of injury, receiver site, size, adjacent injuries and their treatment, vascular integrity test prior to flap placement, operative time, follow-up and complications. A total of 25 patients were included, with 25 re…

Forearm fractures in children are common. When conservative treatment fails, internal fixation with Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing (ESIN) become the first choice in the operative treatment of diaphyseal forearm shaft fractures. Refractures with the intramedullary nail in situ are known to occur but formal guidelines to guide management in such fractures are lacking. We present a well-documented case of a radius midshaft refracture in a 12-year-old boy with the intramedullary nail in situ, managed by closed reduction. Literature is reviewed for this type of complication, the treatment of…

Forearm lacerations involving muscle bellies are usually treated by repairing muscle fascia. Repair of tendons themselves is stronger and restores normal muscle anatomy better. Tendon repair requires good knowledge of forearm muscle and tendon anatomy. We have made cadaver measurements to produce graphical maps of locations of individual muscles tendons of origin and insertion, some practical guides for finding tendon ends and a simple grasping stitch for intramuscular tendons.

This article summarizes the findings from 3 recipients of hand allografts, including a description of the preparatory surgery and the transplant and secondary procedures to enhance the function of the hand, forearm, and arm allografts. The study focuses on the complications and disability reported by each patient, with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. The few complications were controlled successfully with medical treatment. Hand transplantation is a major reconstructive procedure that requires careful medical follow-up. The authors provide the first report of a significant improvement in disab…

Bone bruising represents a new category of bone injury that can only be demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with fat suppression. This study proposed the nature of non-radiographically evident injuries of the distal radius and wrist in children whose symptoms did not resolve after 5 weeks. We aimed to describe and classify the lesions and delineate the importance and potential complications of the injuries. Bone bruising was diagnosed in 20 patients (mean age: 11.6 years; range: 9-13 years). Bone bruises were classified according to anatomical location and whether they were solita

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas represent less than 10% of all chondrosarcomas. The majority of these tumors arise from the skeleton; only 22% have an extraosseous origin. Of the extraskeletal locations, the meninges, brain, and thigh are the most common. Involvement of the forearm is a rare occurrence. This case report describes an extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma involving the forearm.

A 22-year-old man presented with a scarred neophallus and complex hypospadias. The local penile skin was inadequate for urethral repair. A 16 cm free radial forearm flap was used for urethral replacement. Microvascular anastomosis allowed this flap to remain viable and functional. One year postoperatively, the patient had satisfactory functional and cosmetic outcomes. A small fistula developed in the course of the proximal anastomosis, and it was successfully repaired. Our case describes the successful use of a free radial forearm flap for urethral reconstruction.

Reconstruction of the median nerve in the forearm traditionally has required multiple interfascicular interposition autologous nerve grafts. Recovery of two-point discrimination, even in young adults, has been reported rarely. Two patients, aged 43 and 61, are reported with 5-year follow-up of median nerve reconstruction in the distal forearm in which multiple interposition bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid conduits (Neurotube) were used to bridge the 3-cm nerve defects. Four separate 2.3-mm diameter, 4.0-cm long conduits were used in each patient. Sensory re-education was used for rehabilitatio…

This article describes the concomitant presence of two anomalous forearm muscles in a 20-year-old man, discovered accidentally during an operation for a forearm injury. The first one was similar to a reverse palmaris longus muscle except for its direction to the Guyon's canal. The second one originated from the radial antebrachial fascia, superficial to all other forearm muscles in the lower half of the forearm, then diverged medially and extended into the Guyon's canal and was innervated by the ulnar nerve. The patient had no symptoms related to overcrowding of the Guyon's canal before the in…
