BACKGROUND: An approach of daily or 5 days per week treatment as maintenance therapy is mandatory among HIV patients with CMV retinitis. We evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of thrice weekly maintenance therapy for CMV retinitis in AIDS patients.
METHODS: Sixty nine consecutive patients with CMV disease were eligible for a prospective open clinical trial. Thirty three completed the induction treatment of CMV retinitis, agreed on maintenance thrice weekly and were included. A case of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-associated bilateral retrobulbar optic neuritis (ON) following haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) is reported. After kidney transplantation, thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) can occur de novo or as recurrent disease. Phosphonoformate (PFA), a monophosphonate pyrophosphate analog, caused plasma biochemical and bone histomorphologic abnormalities in cats given 1,000 mg/kg/day as a continuous intravenous infusion for 14 days. Plasma biochemical alterations observed in young cats (10 weeks old) treated with PFA included increased calcium and decreased phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and calcitriol. Young cats treated with PFA developed rickets-like lesions characterized by widened growth plates, increased osteoid, and failure of mineralization. In addition, area of mineralized trabecular bone was decreased.
