The effect of prosthetic alignment on lower limb kinetics in people with a transtibial bone-anchored prosthesis: An experimental within-subject study.

BACKGROUND: The alignment of a bone-anchored prosthesis has consequences for the external moments around the residual joints and implant, and these external moments can lead to serious negative long-term effects. A clear understanding of the relationship between transtibial prosthetic alignment and external joint and implant moment for bone-anchored prosthetic users is still lacking. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the effect of systematic frontal plane prosthetic alignment changes on lower limb external joint moments in people with a transtibial bone-anchored prosthesis? METHODS: Participants un

Median defect in the skull.

A median defect in the region of the root of the nose, in between the two orbits, was discovered in the dried skull of a 44-year-old female cadaver, during routine undergraduate teaching. The two small nasal bones articulated with each other and the cribriform plate of the ethmoid. The lacrimal bones and frontal processes of the maxillary bones were also deformed. We propose that the median defect was due to abnormality at the fonticulus frontalis, the prenasal space and the interorbitonasal part of the nasal capsule, as well as defects in the ossification of the maxilla, lacrimal and frontal

An Uncommon Osseous Frontal Sinus Tumor: Monostotic Paget's Disease.

Paget's disease of the bone is a disorder characterized by abnormal breakdown and formation of bone tissue. The cause is believed to be either viral or genetic in origin. Most of the time, patients are asymptomatic. Diagnosis is supported by findings from multiple modalities including serum markers, imaging, bone scans, and histology. We present a rare case of Paget's disease of the bone involving the frontal sinus. We review the relevant clinical, diagnostic, and histological findings. We also suggest indications for the management of monostotic Paget's disease of the frontal sinus.

Bioactive glass S53P4 in frontal sinus obliteration: a long-term clinical experience.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic, osteoconductive, and antimicrobial bioactive glass (BAG) has been used in many surgical applications. METHODS: BAG was used as obliteration material in a series of osteoplastic frontal sinus operations on 42 patients suffering from chronic frontal sinusitis, which could not be cured with other means of treatment. RESULTS: Accurate obliteration of sinuses was achieved in 39 patients. Uneventful recovery and clinical outcome were seen in 92% of the patients. Histopathologic samples harvested at 1, 5, and 10 years after obliteration revealed a healing process progressing

Mammalian frontal diploic vein and the human foramen caecum.

The course of the frontal diploic vein in the mole Talpa and the tree shrew Tupaia is described and compared to the frontal diploic vein of other mammals. The frontal diploic vein in Talpa and Tupaia connects the dorsal sagittal sinus to the veins of the orbit and has an emissary function. In certain other mammals it has a diploic function and may drain towards the orbit (e.g., Orycteropus) or towards the dorsal sagittal sinus (e.g., Didelphis). The frontal diploic vein of these mammals is not homologous to the vein of the human foramen caecum, but to the human frontal diploic vein. The vein o

Closed Reconstruction of Depressed Frontal Sinus Fractures: An Innovative Technique.

This article describes a novel technique for reconstructing a frontal sinus fracture that minimizes the risks associated with conventional approaches. In this study, we report a patient presented with a depressed frontal sinus fracture following a car accident. Through a small (5 mm) sub-brow incision, a freer elevator was inserted beneath the fractured fragments to elevate them. A 16-gauge venous catheter was then introduced horizontally from the medial aspect of the bone, exiting at the lateral side. Following this, a 24-gauge wire was threaded through the catheter, which was subsequently re

[Remodeling the cranial vault in anterior craniosynostoses. Our therapeutic experience of trigonocephaly and plagiocephaly].

The authors propose two simple techniques to improve the adaptation of the frontal vault after remodeling the orbito-naso-frontal flap in anterior craniostenosis. In trigonocephaly: the metopic suturectomy is enlarged by lateral translation of the two half frontal bones, then to fall the place the coronal suture is used. The temporal plates are moved forward and turned to fill the failure of fronto-temporal junction due to valgisation of orbito-naso-frontal band. In plagiocephaly: the frontal flattened flap is cut with oblique radial osteotomies starting at bregma so called "Daisy petal". The

Three-dimensional sonographic description of abnormal metopic suture in second- and third-trimester fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To describe patterns of abnormal development of the metopic suture in association with fetal malformations during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of the frontal bones and metopic suture in 11 fetuses at 17-32 weeks of gestation. Cases were selected because there were obvious abnormalities in the metopic sutures. In each case, a malformation was detected by two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound and the abnormality of the metopic suture was detected and evaluated on three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound, using transparent maximum mode. Pediatric frontal mucocele secondary to a bifid frontal sinus septum.

A mucocele is a mucus-containing sac lined with epithelium that arises within a sinus when its drainage is compromised. The frontal sinus is the most common location, with frontal mucocele development occurring when the nasofrontal duct becomes obstructed because of polyps, bone tumors, prior surgery, sinusitis, trauma, or anatomic variation. We report an unusual case of a sterile pediatric frontal mucocele presenting as a slowly enlarging forehead mass due to a bifid frontal sinus septum. A 9-year-old girl presented to the craniofacial clinic for evaluation of a right frontal mass that had be

Usefulness of vascularized galeal frontalis myofascial flap as treatment for postoperative infection in frontal sinus fracture.

Inappropriate treatments of frontal sinus fractures may lead to serious complications, such as mucopyocele, meningitis, and brain abscess. Assessment of nasofrontal duct injury is crucial, and nasofrontal duct injury necessitates sinus obliteration. For sinus obliteration, autogenous fat, muscle, bone, pericranium grafts, and alloplastic materials, such as Surgicel, hydroxyapatite (Bone Source), and methyl methacrylate, are commonly used. However, autogenous tissue grafts and alloplastic materials cannot prevent infection, which is the leading cause of complications of frontal sinus surgery. A

Postsurgical predictive theoretical thickness (PTT) of frontal sinus anterior wall as key point in surgical management of frontal bossing: proposal of a new analytic method.

BACKGROUND: Frontal bossing is a malformation characterized by peculiar prominent forehead, and commonly it can be associated with cranial synostosis and endocrine disorder; however, nonsyndromic conditions are described as well.Literature controversies on proper frontal bossing surgical treatment showed evidence of 2 main surgical procedures: frontal bone reshaping and bone en bloc mobilization.A decision-making criterion between these 2 techniques has never been described in literature. METHODS: In this paper, the authors introduce their brand-new analytic method for decision-making between

Surgery for unilateral coronal synostosis (plagiocephaly): unilateral or bilateral correction?

Debate still exists concerning the extent of frontal reconstruction for the correction of plagiocephaly resulting from unilateral coronal synostosis. Between 1982 and 1994, 38 patients with unilateral coronal synostosis have been treated in our department. Initially, a unilateral frontal craniotomy with advancement of the ipsilateral supraorbital bar was used in 13 patients. An unsatisfactory postoperative appearance of the forehead led to modification of the technique using a bilateral frontal bone flap. This allowed simpler and improved forehead reconstruction. The method was used in 22 pati

[Corrective craniofacial surgery in the acrocephalosyndactylia syndrome (Saethre-Chotzen syndrome)].

The possibility of plastic surgery in acrocephalosyndactylia syndrome during infancy is shown. Due to her main signs and symptoms and the mode of inheritance the patient suffered from an acrocephalosyndactylia syndrome type III (Saethre-Chotzen). Craniofacial surgery with frontal craniotomy, turn of frontal bone and frontal orbital advancement were performed at the age of eight months, using bone plates developed by Luhr. The reconstruction gave an aesthetically satisfactory result, and further development was normal. The condition for a good result is the cooperation between plastic surgeons,

[Distraction osteogenesis as treatment for craniofacial deformities].

Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical technique for treating different craniofacial deformities. The sophisticated clinical expression of craniosynosotosis in the face, as well as in the skull can be corrected using different osteotomies, in which we can include the frontal bone, orbits, the malar bones and the maxillae. Once the osteotomy has been completed, we can use the distraction devices to achieve the planned bone advancement. This procedure can be also performed with endoscopic techniques producing less morbidity, with minimal complications, simultaneously producing a highly satisfact

Fronto-Orbital Advancement for Metopic and Unilateral Coronal Craniosynostoses.

Fronto-orbital advancement remains a powerful technique for the correction of anterior cranial vault differences related to metopic (trigonocephaly) or unilateral coronal (anterior plagiocephaly) craniosynostoses. Traditional fronto-orbital advancement requires access to the forehead and superior 2/3 of the orbit via a coronal incision. The frontal bone and orbital segment (bandeau) are then separated from the skull and reshaped. In patients with metopic craniosynostosis, the bandeau and frontal bone will need to be advanced and widened. In patients with unilateral coronal craniosynostosis, th

Tension pneumocephalus from orbital roof fracture.

Despite the detection and treatment of an extensive orbitocranial fracture in an 18-year-old man following a motor vehicle injury, the persistent leakage of CSF and trapping of air within the intracranial cavity resulted in fulminant neurologic deterioration due to the mass effect of air when tension pneumocephalus developed. The ethmoidal defect closed spontaneously, and the patient recovered neurologically when the tension pneumocephalus was relieved with a ventriculoatrial shunt. Orbitocranial injuries, which may be unsuspected despite careful orbital, neurologic, and conventional roentgeno

Frontal sinus fractures: computed tomography evaluation of sinus obliteration with lyophilized cartilage.

Allogenic lyophilized cartilage has been proven clinically to be a reliable material for obliteration of the frontal sinus without the limitations of donor site morbidity and the prolongation of the operation time produced by autogenic grafting. The long-term behaviour of the implanted material is of paramount importance for the success of the obliterative technique. This survey included 51 trauma patients on whom obliteration of the frontal sinus with lyophilized cartilage was performed. The fate of the lyophilized cartilage graft was evaluated from computed tomography imaging of the oblitera
