The relationship between frontal sinusitis and localization of the frontal sinus outflow tract: a computer-assisted anatomical and clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between frontal sinusitis and the localization of the frontal sinus outflow tract medial or lateral to the superior attachment of the uncinate process (UP). DESIGN: A retrospective anatomical and clinical study. SETTING: An ear, nose, and throat clinic in işli Etfal Teaching and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey. PATIENTS: Paranasal sinus computed tomographic scans of 486 sides of the frontal sinuses (hereafter referred to as sides) of 243 patients who had chronic sinusitis were evaluated. In 125 sides (26%), the superior attachment of the UP could …

[Current aspects of frontal sinus surgery. I: Endonasal frontal sinus drainage in inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinuses].

Most conditions of the frontal sinus requiring surgery can now be managed successfully by endonasal procedures. According to Draf, 3 types of frontal sinus drainage occur. Surgical techniques and indications are described. In a retrospective study we evaluated 132/648 patients who were on average 5 years postoperative. Forty-two patients had type 1, 43 patients had type 2 and 47 patients had type 3 drainage. Endoscopy revealed a normal mucosa in 56-67%, whole polyps were found in 9-15%. There was no recurrence of an orbital or endocranial complication. According to our definition of surgical s

Prevalence of Frontal Recess Cells and Their Effect on the Development of Frontal Sinusitis According to the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification: A Retrospective Computed Tomography Analysis.

Frontal recess is an important region in endoscopic surgery in terms of its complex anatomic structure and excessive pneumatized cell variations. With the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC), classification and nomenclature of cellular variations in this region have been facilitated. The aim of the present study was to determine the incidence of frontal recess cell variations in computed tomography (CT) according to IFAC and to investigate the possible effect of these cells on the development of frontal sinusitis. In this observational, retrospective, and cross-sectional …

The Pott's puffy tumor: an unusual complication of frontal sinusitis, methods for its detection.

This is a case report of a Pott's puffy tumor, characterized by a subperiosteal abscess associated with frontal bone osteomyelitis, as a consequence of a frontal sinusitis, in a 15-year-old boy. Pott's puffy tumor is a rare condition usually seen as a complication of frontal sinusitis and more commonly described in children. Given that, superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysms might be interpreted as a cyst or lipoma, it is imperative that physicians be aware of their presentation.

[Acute frontal sinusitis accompanied with extra-dural abscess (a case reported with literature reviewed)].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics of acute frontal sinusitis accompanied with extra-dural abscess. METHOD: A case of acute frontal sinusitis accompanied with extra-dural abscess diagnosed by CT was analyzed, and the relative literatures were reviewed. RESULT: Headache, high fever and failure to antibiotic therapy were the main three clinical characteristics. CONCLUSION: It is the most important thing to drainage the abscess except for antibiotic therapy for acute frontal sinusitis accompanied with extra-dural abscess. Antibiotic therapy cannot substitute for surgery.

Analysis of Therapeutic Efficacy of Endoscopic Transethmoidal Ethmoidectomy Combined With Endoscopic Transnasal Frontal Sinusotomy in the Treatment of Refractory Frontal Sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a combined approach involving transfrontal sinus debridement and transnasal endoscopic frontal sinusotomy in the treatment of postcraniotomy frontal sinusitis. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on a cohort of 20 patients with postcraniotomy frontal sinusitis treated by the endoscopic surgery team at the Department of Neurosurgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, over a 5-year period. All patients underwent the combined procedure of transfrontal sinus debridement and transnasal endoscopic frontal sinusotomy, …

Osteomyelitis of Frontal Sinus: A Rare Sequelae of Acute Bacterial Sinusitis Associated With Anatomical Variations in the Frontal Sinus Drainage Pathway.

Frontal osteomyelitis is characterized by localized osteal inflammation of the frontal bone. This is a rare complication of acute frontal sinusitis. The present case is being reported to highlight the likely role of anatomical variations in frontal sinus drainage pathways in the causation of this complication apart from other known predisposing factors like young age and immunocompromised state. The patient initially presented with seizures, fever, and headache and was diagnosed with viral encephalitis. However, the symptoms gradually progressed to cause right eye swelling and an increase in t…

Rhino-frontal sinuseptotomy (RFS): a combined intra-extra nasal approach for the surgical treatment of severely diseased frontal sinuses.

OBJECTIVES: Frontal sinus surgery is a challenge to those involved in the treatment of recurrent frontal sinusitis. The purpose of this report is to describe the technique and to present the results of a combined endoscopic and external approach to the frontal sinus (rhino-frontal sinuseptotomy [RFS]). MATERIAL: RFS was performed in 45 patients by the author; 41 of these patients had a follow-up over 12 months and were included in this series. Indications for RFS were severe chronic frontal sinusitis (n = 23), mucoceles (n = 12), in two cases each with osteoma, inverting papilloma, and malign…

Resection of the interfrontal sinus septum in chronic or recurrent frontal sinusitis. Pre- and post-operative evaluation of the naso-frontal duct.

In 9 patients with recurrent attacks of acute or chronic frontal sinusitis, interfrontal sinus septum resection was performed. In 5 patients there was unilateral disease and in 4 bilateral. As all patients had previously had their frontal sinus trephined, pre- and post-operative naso-frontal duct function tests were performed. Pre-operatively, of 11 naso-frontal ducts tested (2 patients bilaterally) not one showed air flow on spontaneous respiration. Passage of air was obtained at forced inspiration and expiration in one patient and by Valsalva's manoeuvre in 6. No flow of air whatsoever was o…
