The first training program for genetic counselors began in 1969. Since then a number of other programs have been developed and more than 650 individuals have graduated from these programs. This article reviews the development and current status of training opportunities for genetic counselors. Twelve programs that currently grant a master's-level degree in genetic counseling are reviewed. Other areas, such as certification and licensure, that reflect genetic counseling training or such issues of professional growth as continuing education and career advances are addressed.

In 1859, Ludvig Dahl, a Norwegian alienist, wrote a rarely referenced book entitled "Contribution to The Knowledge of Insanity." In it, he describes a highly innovative psychiatric genetics research project with severable notable features. First, while the vast majority of 19th century psychiatric genetic studies were based on asylum hospital records, Dahl did field work to find cases of mental illness in certain defined areas within Norway, using census data, key-informants, record reviews, and personal interviews especially of suspected affected individuals. Second, for the first time in the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Policies for genetic testing in children (GTIC) focus on medical or psychosocial benefit to the child, discouraging or prohibiting carrier testing, and advising caution regarding pre-symptomatic diagnosis if no treatment exists. This study sought to understand parents' perspectives on these issues and determine their experiences and knowledge related to genetic testing for Batten disease - a set of inherited neurodegenerative diseases of childhood onset for which no disease modifying therapies yet exist.
METHODS: Parents of children with Batten disease completed a s

The practice of "evidence-based medicine" aims at the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of the current best evidence in making decisions about the individualised patient care. The clinical genetics evolved from translational genetics research and contributes to the clinical care of patients and families through evidence-based health care in managing inherited disorders through accurate diagnosis, molecular pathology and assessing phenotypic correlations. Translational genetics and genomics research has led to the development of powerful tools for clinical diagnosis, assessing individua

PURPOSE: This study investigates the knowledge gaps about fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI) among women's healthcare providers. Previous research highlighted a lack of awareness regarding FXPOI as a cause of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) and its diagnosis. The objective of this study was to describe these gaps and explore demographic factors influencing FXPOI knowledge in women's healthcare practitioners.
METHODS: A survey assessed familiarity with primary ovarian insufficiency and FXPOI knowledge among 107 women's healthcare providers and 14 medical students in

Mrs. R and others like her are having prophylactic surgery to prevent breast cancer based primarily on their family history, personal history, and environmental risks. Although the clinical application of genetics medical research is in its infancy, its relevance to breast cancer already is making significant I advances toward more accurate prognosis and treatment options for women and their families. Illness and death from breast cancer continue to limit human existence, whereas new information and medical treatments increase the complexity of healthcare decisions and family life. Rolland and

A hereditary cancer syndrome is a genetic predisposition to certain types of cancer, often with onset at an early age, caused by inherited pathogenic variants in one or more genes. Most hereditary cancer syndromes exhibit autosomal dominant inheritance. The most common hereditary cancer syndromes related to women's cancer include hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, Lynch syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Cowden syndrome, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and hereditary diffuse gastric cancer. A hereditary cancer risk assessment is the key to identifying patients and families who may be at incre

Many private companies offer direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing services. Some tests may detect severe and highly penetrant monogenic disorders, while other tests are for genetic variants found associated with increased susceptibility for common and complex diseases in large-scale population studies. Through its Public and Professional Policy committee followed by member and expert consultation, the European Society of Human Genetics has developed the following policy on advertising and provision of predictive genetic tests by such DTC companies: (1) clinical utility of a genetic test sh

Diagnosis of rare, genetic diseases is challenging, but conceptual frameworks of the diagnostic process can guide quality improvement initiatives. Using the National Academy of Medicine diagnostic framework, we assessed the extent of, and reasons for diagnostic delays and diagnostic errors in schwannomatosis, a neurogenetic syndrome characterized by nerve sheath tumors and chronic pain. We reviewed the medical records of 97 people with confirmed or probable schwannomatosis seen in two US tertiary care clinics. Time-to-event analysis revealed a median time from first symptom to diagnosis of 16.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Primary bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia is a rare cause of Cushing's syndrome and is more often diagnosed as bilateral adrenal incidentalomas with subclinical cortisol production. We summarize the recent insights concerning its epidemiology, diagnosis, genetics, pathophysiology, and therapeutic options.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent publications have modified our notions on the genetics and pathophysiology of bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia. Combined germline and somatic mutations of armadillo repeat containing 5 gene were identified in familial cases, in ap

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics recently issued recommendations for reporting incidental findings from clinical whole-genome sequencing and whole-exome sequencing. The recommendations call for evaluating a specific set of genes as part of all whole-genome sequencing/whole-exome sequencing and reporting all pathogenic variants irrespective of patient age. The genes are associated with highly penetrant disorders for which treatment or prevention is available. The effort to generate a list of genes with actionable findings is commendable, but the recommendations raise severa

BACKGROUND: The rapidity of technological change in genetics is not always matched by the uptake of this new knowledge into practice. Increasing genetic knowledge has already led to legal liability for those who have not used it properly, such as not informing patients or their families of potential genetic risk. A similar outcome is also of concern in the case of risk prediction models used for hereditary breast cancer.
RESULTS: No legal case has directly addressed the use of risk prediction models. However, as genetic medicine and risk prediction models become more widely used, the prospect

We report on a 41-year-old woman of normal intelligence with a complicated past medical history including unilateral profound hearing loss, unilateral Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly, and leukoencephalopathy. She was referred to an adult neurology clinic because of a previous diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, which was non-responsive to multiple medications. Due to her complicated past medical history, the medical genetics service was consulted. She was found to have a chromosome 6p25.3-6p25.2 deletion on SNP array. This report highlights chromosome 6p subtelomeric deletions as a possible underlying ca
