Manifestations of systemic diseases can appear in the oral-maxillofacial area. They can be microbial, hematologic, endocrine, metabolic, genetic, nutritional, granulomatous and immunologic, and are based upon the disease. We present an extremely rare case in which deposits of crystallized monosodium urate appeared in the right paranasal region.

INTRODUCTION: Calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis is increasingly recognized as a disorder influencednot only by diet and host oxalate handling, but also by the gut-kidneymicrobiome axis. Emerging multi-omics studies suggest that disturbances inintestinal and urinary microbiota, together with altered microbial metabolites, may contribute to disrupted oxalate homeostasis, inflammatory signaling, epithelialinjury, and crystal retention.
METHODS: We performed a narrative, semi-structuredreview of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science (2010-2025), focusing onoxalate metabolism, gut and urinary microbiota

The application of biosolids can improve soil fertility and nutrient cycling but also can pose risks of heavy metals and antibiotics introduction. The individual effects of heavy metals and antibiotics accumulation on soil microbial communities and functions have been reported, however, their combined effects during biosolids application to agricultural soil remain unclear. In order to explore the effects of long-term biosolids application on soil microbial communities, we sampled soil from a field experiment spanning 16 years of biosolids application and determined the abundance of resistance

Chronic periodontitis (CP) is associated with subgingival microbial dysbiosis and demonstrates specific microbial patterns, though definitive causal connections with microbiomes in distinct anatomical regions remain undetermined. Genome-wide association datasets for CP and oral microbial communities were sourced from a large European cohort and China National GeneBank DataBase (CNGBdb), respectively. Employing single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as genetic instruments, Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted through the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) approach. Analysis methods

OBJECTIVE: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common, highly heritable immune-mediated arthropathy that occurs in genetically susceptible individuals exposed to an unknown but likely ubiquitous environmental trigger. There is a close relationship between the gut and spondyloarthritis, as exemplified in patients with reactive arthritis, in whom a typically self-limiting arthropathy follows either a gastrointestinal or urogenital infection. Microbial involvement in AS has been suggested; however, no definitive link has been established. The aim of this study was to determine whether the gut in pat

Microbial metabolism encompasses the biochemical networks that enable cells to convert nutrients into the energy and biosynthetic precursors necessary for cellular function. Understanding microbial metabolism is crucial for ecology, microbiology, and applications in biotechnology, agriculture, and medicine, as it underpins the biological processes that sustain life in various environments. Microbial metabolic products can be broadly classified as primary or secondary metabolites. Primary metabolites, such as amino acids, carbohydrates, organic acids, and alcohols, are essential for energy gene

BACKGROUND: Whether alterations in the gut microbiota play a causal role in chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) remains uncertain. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used in this study to assess the potential causal effect of gut microbiota on CAP risk.
METHODS: Gut microbiota summary statistics were from the MiBioGen consortium's largest GWAS, and CAP data from the FinnGen project. The inverse variance-weighted method was the main analytic approach, and sensitivity analyses verified instrument robustness.
RESULTS: Two microbial taxa showed positive causal effect with CAP:

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract associated with substantial alterations in gut microbial composition and metabolic function. This study investigated intestinal dysbiosis in affected individuals using microbial profiling, genetic analysis, metabolomic assessment, and pathway modeling. Patients showed reduced microbial diversity, loss of beneficial species such as Faecalibacterium and Roseburia, and increased abundance of inflammatory taxa, including Escherichia coli and Fusobacterium, alongside a marked decrease in the Firmicutes-to-Bacteroide

Life on Earth has evolved under the predictable rotation of the planet, giving rise to intrinsic timing mechanisms that synchronize physiology and behavior with the 24-h day-night cycle. These molecular timing systems organize metabolism, immunity, and cellular renewal into recurring daily programs that optimize energy use and defense. Increasing evidence now reveals that circadian logic extends beyond the host to include its microbial partners. Host feeding rhythms, epithelial renewal, and immune activity impose temporal order on the microbiota, while microbial metabolites and immune signalin

Microbial outcomes emerge from dynamic interactions among host defenses, microbial traits, and environmental context. This narrative review examines aquatic host-microbe systems, with emphasis on zebrafish and Vibrio species, as experimentally tractable aquatic models for understanding how interactions shift across a spectrum from mutualism to pathogenesis. We first define major aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate models, highlighting how each balances scalability, genetic accessibility, physiological complexity, and translational relevance. We then use Vibrio species as a framework for moving

The intratumoral microbiota is increasingly recognized as an active component of the tumor microenvironment, yet whether it directly drives tumor mutagenesis remains unclear. Here, integrated multi-omics analysis of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) identifies Mycobacterium abscessus as a microbial determinant of APOBEC3A-associated mutagenesis. Mechanistically, the bacterial effector nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDK) directly targets the host transcription factor IRF3 and installs a non-canonical 1-phosphohistidine modification at H263, thereby amplifying type I interferon signaling

The gut microbiome is integral to human health, yet research data to date have emphasized industrialized populations. Here, we performed large-scale shotgun metagenomic sequencing on 1,893 individuals from rural Honduras, providing the most comprehensive microbiome dataset from Central America. We identify a distinct microbial composition enriched in Prevotella species. Longitudinal analysis in 301 individuals reveals microbiome instability, with shifts in taxonomic diversity and metabolic potential, including changes associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. There is growing evidence that the upper female genital tract is not sterile, harbouring its own microbial communities. However, the significance and the potential effect of endometrial microorganisms on reproductive functions remain to be fully elucidated. Analysing the endometrial microbiome, the microbes and their genetic material present in the endometrium, is an emerging area of study. The initial studies suggest it is associated with poor reproductive outcomes and with different gynaecological pathologies. Nevertheless, studying a low-biomass microbial niche as is endometrium, the challe

Proteases from a variety of sources (viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants, and insects) have toxicity towards insects. Some of these insecticidal proteases evolved as venom components, herbivore resistance factors, or microbial pathogenicity factors, while other proteases play roles in insect development or digestion, but exert an insecticidal effect when over-expressed from genetically engineered plants or microbial pathogens. Many of these proteases are cysteine proteases, although insect-toxic metalloproteases and serine proteases have also been examined. The sites of protease toxic activity ra

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The "oral-microbiota-brain axis" has been hypothesized to contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis, but causal evidence remains limited. We performed a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate potential genetic causality between oral microbiota and AD in East Asians.
METHODS: Two-sample MR integrated genome-wide data from 2984 Chinese participants (saliva/tongue dorsum microbiomes) and 7036 Japanese participants (3962 AD cases/4074 controls). Genetic instruments were selected using pragmatically moderated significance thresholds (forward:

Chickens are a vital dietary protein source globally, yet their immune function is increasingly compromised by interconnected challenges including breed specific genetic heterogeneity, viral infections, intestinal microbial dysbiosis, and environmental stressors-all of which hinder sustainable poultry production. The chicken immune system, anchored by central immune organs (bursa of Fabricius, thymus) and peripheral immune organs (spleen, lymph nodes), relies on the coordinated interplay of innate and adaptive immunity to fend off exogenous pathogens. However, the holistic regulatory networks

Nonischemic cardiomyopathies (NICMs), encompassing hypertrophic (HCM), dilated (DCM), restrictive, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia, and nondilated left ventricular cardiomyopathies, contribute significantly to cardiovascular morbidity, representing nearly 50% of cardiac transplants. Despite improved genetic and imaging techniques, underdiagnosis persists, particularly for HCM. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies provide a powerful method to identify causal risk factors, overcoming limitations of observational studies and randomized controlled trials. This manuscript

Genetic and environmental factors shape host susceptibility to infection, but how and how rapidly environmental variation might alter the susceptibility of mammalian genotypes remains unknown. Here, we investigate the impacts of seminatural environments upon the nematode susceptibility profiles of inbred C57BL/6 mice. We hypothesized that natural exposure to microbes might directly (e.g., via trophic interactions) or indirectly (e.g., via microbe-induced immune responses) alter the hatching, growth, and survival of nematodes in mice housed outdoors. We found that while C57BL/6 mice are resista
