Marked renal potassium and magnesium wasting, alkalosis, and a progressive increase in plasma renin and eventual hyperaldosteronemia developed during a 15-month course of in-hospital capreomycin therapy that was necessary for drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis. A prominent feature of the present case was renal chloride wasting, a feature of the capreomycin syndrome that has previously received little attention. Similar potentially life-threatening metabolic abnormalities, which resemble those found in Bartter's syndrome, can occur during prolonged therapy with the antibiotic gentamicin. In

Serum gentamicin concentration was measured in 31 newborn babies who received oral gentamicin for prophylaxis of necrotizing enterocolitis in order to determine the presence and degree of gastrointestinal absorption and its relationship to birth weight, gestational age, postnatal age and perinatal asphyxia. A dose of 2.5 mg/kg every 6 h by nasogastric tube was administered during a 3-week course after birth. The mean birth weight was 1,269 +/- 489 g; mean gestational age 29.6 +/- 3.7 weeks. The mean serum gentamicin levels were: 0.06 +/- 0.03 microgram/ml at 30 min after the first dose; 0.29 +

During a two-year period from January 1979, 260 patients have been involved in an outbreak of carriage and infection due to gentamicin-resistant enterobacteria. We have examined the duration of carriage of such enterobacteria and have compared the carriage of Klebsiella with that of other resistant enterobacteria. Carriage of gentamicin-resistant enterobacteria occurred most frequently and was least sporadic in the intestinal tract. Vaginal carriage was observed in 49 out of 68 patients tested and occurred more frequently in older patients. Oral carriage was noted in 36% of patients but was mo

In 1979 seven gentamicin (G)-resistant (res.) Staphylococcus aureus strains caused epidemic episodes in eight Danish hospitals. Furthermore, a total of 37 resistant strains were isolated from separate incidents. All the G-res. strains were resistant to kanamycin, sisomicin and tobramycin, five to amikacin and two to cephalothin. None were resistant to netilmicin. Twelve out of the total of 44 strains were multiply-res. (resistant to penicillin, streptomycin and tetracyclines), and 10 of these were also resistant to methicillin (M). All phage groups/complexes were represented, group III by 13,

A patient with enterococcal endocarditis, who relapsed after repeated courses of apparently adequate treatment with ampicillin plus gentamicin, was subsequently cured with ampicillin-tobramycin therapy. The organisms isolated from this patient were strains of Streptococcus faecalis that were resistant to penicillin (or ampicillin)-gentamicin synergism but not to penicillin (or ampicillin)-tobramycin synergism. The mechanism of resistance in these strains appears to be related to a specific defect in the intracellular uptake of gentamicin (but not tobramycin) in the presence of penicillin.

The administration of a combination of penicillin and gentamicin to mice given an intraperitoneal challenge of a highly pathogenic strain of Listeria monocytogenes resulted in increased survival as compared with groups receiving penicillin alone or gentamicin alone or a control group that received no antibiotic. The median survival of animals that eventually died was no longer than in groups receiving single antibiotics and suggests that additional studies should be carried out to further investigate the possibility of synergism in animal models.

A rapid, specific method for measuring gentamicin in plasma by high-pressure liquid chromatography was developed. After deproteinization, gentamicin in the supernate was dansylated and extracted into ethyl acetate. The organic extract was chromatographed on a microparticulate reversed-phase column, which was eluted with aqueous acetonitrile. Use of the dansyl derivative enables fluorometry, for more sensitive quantitation. Various factors that could affect the assay sensitivity were investigated. With 0.2-ml plasma samples, the method can accurately measure as little as 1 mg of gentamicin per

Of 783 newborn infants with spina bifida cystica and cranium bifidum treated in the 6 years to December 1966, 11% died of ventriculitis. 24% of all deaths were due to this cause. Experience with treatment of ventriculitis with 2 of the antibiotic drugs, gentamicin and cloxacillin, during an 18-month period is presented. CSF levels were estimated during systemic and intraventricular administration of a drug and the clinical response was correlated with these levels. Of the 14 infants treated with gentamicin, the majority of whom had Gram-negative infections, 7 recovered. The 7 who died as a res

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, particularly in abdominal surgery. In patients allergic to beta-lactams, gentamicin is often used for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP), but its efficacy is questioned due to limited tissue-level pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a monocentric prospective study involving eight adult patients undergoing major abdominal surgery who received gentamicin (5 mg/kg IV) for SAP. Subcutaneous unbound gentamicin concentrations were measured using mic

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that broadly targets Gram-negative bacteria. Gentamicin exhibits ototoxic effects in both human subjects and animal models over several different routes of administration. While gentamicin is primarily vestibulotoxic, it causes sensorineural hearing loss attributed to hair cell damage at the base of the cochlea. Gentamicin can also be administered through intranasal irrigation to treat sinusitis in humans. While this route of delivery is believed to minimize ototoxic effects, we have shown gait ataxia, longer latency cervical vestibular-evoked myogeni

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of cinnamon and statins on the renal and liver functions of gentamicin-received rats.
METHODS: Forty male albino rats were recruited into 4 groups (10 rat each) for a 21-day period by gavage treatment. The control group 1 was given nothing but 0.5 ml normal saline, and others injected with a dose of 100 mg/kg of Gentamicin intraperitoneally for one week before treatment. Group 2 received Gentamicin alone, Group 3 received an aqueous extract of cinnamon, and Group 4 treated with a statin medication.
RESULTS: Gentamicin-treated group

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that broadly targets Gram-negative bacteria. While gentamicin is a clinically effective antibiotic, it has significant oto- and nephrotoxicity. In human subjects, repeated exposure to gentamicin results in dizziness, tinnitus, and high frequency hearing loss. Gentamicin has similar effects across animal species and through several different routes of delivery, including injection and direct deposits in the tympanic cavity. Gentamicin can also be administered intranasally to treat sinusitis in humans and this route of delivery is believed to minimize t
