Gingival Crevicular Fluid: An Overview.

Gingival crevicular fluid is an inflammatory exudate derived from the periodontal tissues. It is composed of serum and locally generated materials such as tissue breakdown products, inflammatory mediators, and antibodies directed against dental plaque bacteria. It plays a special part in maintaining the structure of junctional epithelium and the antimicrobial defense of periodontium. Some of the suspected periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola produce broad-spectrum neutral proteinases as part of their virulence arsenal. These proteinases may be detected

[The research progress in gingival invagination].

Gingival invagination is a type of gingival cleft that occurs during orthodontic space closure in some of the orthodontic patients who received tooth extraction. Clinical manifestations may be fine folds in attached gingiva surface, or deep cleft that penetrates the interdental papilla from the buccal to the lingual alveolar process. Gingival invagination can affect the health of local periodontal tissues, the effect and stability of orthodontic treatment. This article reviews the research progress of gingival invagination studies, including the definition, manifestations, causes, influencing

Amlodipine-induced gingival enlargement.

The three most common classes of medications implicated in drug-induced gum enlargement are anticonvulsives, calcineurin inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers. Treatment primarily consists of withdrawing the offending agent whenever possible, in addition to maintaining good oral hygiene. Gingivectomy or flap surgery may be needed in resistant cases.

Management of gingival black triangles.

Gingival black triangles (GBTs) are generally considered to be aesthetically unacceptable, have a multifactorial aetiology and a range of treatment options. This review covers the surgical and non-surgical management of GBTs. Surgical methods address recontouring, preserving or reconstructing the soft tissue including the interdental papilla as well as the alveolar bone. Non-surgical approaches include restorative techniques (including the use of prostheses and gingival-coloured materials), orthodontic movement, tissue engineering and tissue volumisers. This review covers the aetiology and man

Conflation of gingival overgrowth and schwannoma.

The authors describe a seminal case report of a 10-year-old boy with enlarged gingivae in relation to his maxillary anterior teeth. The lesion, provisionally diagnosed as idiopathic gingival enlargement, was completely excised and divided into two sections. The histological and immunohistochemical findings in one of the sections showed it to be characteristic of schwannoma while the other section showed indications of idiopathic gingival enlargement. The patient has been followed up carefully and no recurrence has been noted.

Gingival diseases in childhood - a review.

Children and adolescents are subject to a wide variety of gingival infections. Epidemiological studies indicate that gingivitis of varying severity is nearly a universal finding in children and adolescents. The shorter life span of the primary dentition may be the reason why in general little attention is given to periodontitis in children. Since early diagnosis is important for successful treatment, it is imperative that children receive a periodontal examination as part of their routine dental visit. Furthermore destructive periodontal disease occurs in children with certain systemic disease…

Slow-growing gingival mass.

OBJECTIVES: A 33-year-old woman presented with a slow growing palatal gingival mass. The clinical differential diagnosis included benign tumors and tumor-like lesions, including the pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, giant cell fibroma, peripheral odontogenic tumors, and oral focal mucinosis. STUDY DESIGN: The lesion was excised and histopathological examination followed by immunohistochemical staining was carried out. RESULTS: The microscopic findings and the immunohistochemical reactivity was diagnostic for a nerve sheath myxoma. CONCLUSIONS

Gingival veneer: Mask the unesthetic.

Periodontal diseases result in damage and destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth, including the bone and periodontal ligament. In some cases, there is loss of gingival coverage of the teeth in esthetic regions, with gingival recession and loss of interdental papilla. The surgical treatment in such situations is costly, requires prolonged healing time, and the results are often unpredictable; this makes it an unpopular choice. The reconstruction of these areas with prosthesis like gingival veneer can be useful to correct the deformities remaining after the control of periodontal

Drug-induced gingival hyperplasia.

Gingival hyperplasia refers to an overgrowth of gum tissue. It starts in the anterior interdental tissues and then extends posteriorly. The gums can sometimes enlarge to cover almost all the teeth. The hyperplastic tissue appears to be fibrous. The consequences are mainly cosmetic. Gingival hyperplasia can be caused by a number of drugs, generally during long-term use.

Gingival plasma cell granuloma.

Plasma cell granuloma is a rare reactive lesion composed of polyclonal plasma cells. It manifests primarily in the lungs, but may occur in various other anatomic locations like the oral cavity. Intraoral plasma cell granulomas involving the tongue, lip, oral mucosa and gingiva have been reported in the past. This case presents a 54-year-old female with chronic periodontitis and mandibular anterior gingival overgrowth treated by Phase I therapy (scaling and root planing) and excisional biopsy. Histological examination revealed inflammatory cell infiltrate containing sheets of plasma cells. Immu

[Treatment of localized gingival erythema].

Forms of a localized erythema can be observed occasionally as an expression of inflamed gingiva. It is characterized by a localized sharply demarcated and painless swelling of the gingiva with considerable redness. The differential diagnosis is not unequivocal and appropriate diagnosis and therapy are a challenge. In the present case presentation we report on three cases, which showed good disease remission after simple antiseptic prophylactic measures. Based on the available literature possible etiologic factors are reviewed and a pragmatic treatment strategy is discussed.

Primary isolated gingival tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis of the oral cavity is a rare event and when present is usually secondary to pulmonary tuberculosis. We present a case of a 33-year-old male patient who presented with symptoms of gingivitis. Local examination revealed multiple ulcers and a few nodules over the gingiva. A nodule biopsy was consistent with the diagnosis of gingival tuberculosis. The patient had no evidence of tuberculosis any where else in the body. Medical treatment was curative. As this condition is very rare, it is often over looked as it is never thought as a common clinical diagnosis. A biopsy is mandatory to e…
