[Grief and depression in advanced age--the significance of losses of close relations in endogenous and neurotic-reactive depressions].

Largely "normal" grief reactions cannot always be easily separated from "pathological" grief reactions and depressive illness. Starting from methodological problems in grief research, 339 patients over 45 years who were treated for endogenous, neurotic or reactive depression and showed signs of pathological grief reaction after former or actual loss of a close-standing person were investigated. Marked sex differences were found. In the investigated patients, the symptom pattern of the pathological grief reactions contained mainly depressive developments, chronification of somatic complaints, p…

Item Response Theory to Evaluate Prolonged Grief Disorder in the DSM-5-TR Among Young Adults.

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). However, the factor structure of PGD has been contested and few studies have tested competing models or assessed the item-level fit of PGD symptoms included in the DSM-5-TR using Item Response Theory (IRT). Therefore, this study addressed these gaps using IRT. The results indicated that a modified three-factor model of the PGD criteria demonstrated the best model fit. IRT analyses identified items in the PGD criteria provided little information o…

Supporting Health Care Professions Learners Experiencing Grief Using the TEARS Framework: A Workshop for Interprofessional Educators.

INTRODUCTION: Health care professionals experience grief reactions as part of their work, yet education in processing these experiences is limited. Learners are particularly vulnerable, as they are known to experience strong emotional reactions and often lack tools or space to process difficult experiences. To address this gap, we developed a novel workshop introducing a structured approach to help educators support learners experiencing grief. METHODS: We conducted a 1-hour virtual workshop at 2 pediatric institutions for interprofessional health professions educators. Facilitators introduce…

Infertility grief and filiation experiences 25 years later: detection of multiple cases from the mixed methods approach.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of infertility generates a significant psychological impact on the couples who experience it. The loss of fertility triggers a psychological mourning process that affects self-esteem and identity. The aim of this study is the follow-up of couples 25 years after conceiving children with artificial insemination of donor semen, to explore from a mixed methods approach the relationship between the mode of elaboration of infertility grief, the communication strategies of the genetic origins of babies and the filiation experience. METHOD: The macrostages of the process a…

Psychometric evaluation of the Swedish Traumatic Grief Inventory Self-Report Plus (TGI-SR+) in bereaved parents.

The International Classification of Diseases Eleventh Edition (ICD-11), and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), now include prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Since criteria for PGD in both classification systems differ from prior proposed grief disorders and each other, the validation of a single instrument to screen for prolonged grief (PG) symptoms of both new diagnoses is critical for bereavement research and care. Therefore, we evaluated the psychometric properties of the Swedish version of the Traumatic Grief Inventory Self-Rep…

Complicated grief and bereavement-related depression as distinct disorders: preliminary empirical validation in elderly bereaved spouses.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether a set of symptoms interpreted as complicated grief could be identified and distinguished from bereavement-related depression and whether the presence of complicated grief would predict enduring functional impairments. METHOD: Data were derived from a study group of 82 recently widowed elderly individuals recruited for an investigation of physiological changes in bereaved persons. Baseline data were collected 3-6 months after the deaths of the subjects' spouses, and follow-up data were collected from 56 of the subjects 18 months after the basel…

Digital Mourning as Collective Psychosocial Support: A Descriptive Phenomenology of Technologically Mediated Grief in a Collectivist Context.

This study examines digital mourning as collective psychosocial support in a collectivist context. Using Husserlian descriptive phenomenology, it reanalyzes interviews with ten Filipino Facebook users who expressed grief online. The analysis explicates how digital environments constitute shared empathy, moral participation, and affective solidarity as lived relational processes. Findings show that digital mourning is not merely a supportive environment but a relational-spiritual praxis through which grief is enacted as psychosocial support. Structured through technological affordances such as …

Grief and bereavement care in pediatric palliative care: Gaps, global disparities, and a proposed integrated framework.

OBJECTIVES: Grief and bereavement care (GBC) remains an underrecognized component of pediatric palliative care (PPC), contributing to the emotional and psychological burden experienced by patients, families, and healthcare professionals (HCPs). This perspective review examines gaps in GBC, defines key types of grief in pediatric settings, and proposes a framework to improve patient- and family-centered grief support. METHODS: We conducted a narrative perspective review using PubMed and Google Scholar to identify literature on GBC in PPC. Search terms included combinations of "grief," "bereave…

Emotion regulation in prolonged grief disorder in later life: Protocol and rationale for a longitudinal neuroimaging study.

Bereavement is a near-universal experience in late life, yet only some older adults develop prolonged grief disorder (PGD). While most transition from acute grief (AG) to integrated (adaptive) grief, the neurobiological substrates underlying divergent trajectories are unclear. Emotion regulation dysfunction is hypothesized to play a central role in PGD pathogenesis, but longitudinal neuroimaging data in bereaved adults are lacking. This study aims to identify functional brain circuit measures of emotional regulation that predict pathological versus adaptive grief trajectories, aligning with th…

Living on behalf of a lost only child: a unique grief coping strategy for China's shidu parents.

Background: Bereaved parents face substantial mental health risks. In addition to seeking help from mental health professionals, bereaved parents often adopt their own grief coping strategies. Among these, some Chinese parents who have lost their only child (shidu parents) adopt a unique, culturally shaped coping strategy known as 'living on behalf of the child.'Methods: A purposive sampling method was used in this study to invite shidu parents who were living on behalf of the child to participate in interviews. In total, 10 interviewees were included in the analysis; specifically, 8 participa…

"Acknowledge my grief" - experiences and needs of bereavement support in Sweden following the death of a loved one.

BACKGROUND: Grief affects most people at some point, and is commonly associated with psychological distress, reduced well-being, and difficulties in everyday functioning. Support for the bereaved is crucial for grief management, but there is a lack of evidence on how grief support should be arranged and offered. This study aims to highlight the support bereaved people in Sweden have been offered and what they wished had been offered. METHOD: Participants answered a web survey with open questions about which support they received after a loved one's death, if they were satisfied with the suppo…

Emotion-focused therapy in the treatment of prolonged grief disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) impacts various dimensions of the bereaved person's life, such as psychological, social, and/or health domains. Psychological interventions, particularly those beyond the cognitive-behavioral approach, are essential to address these difficulties. This is especially relevant given that not all interventions are effective for all bereaved individuals, leaving a subset of people without adequate help. Emotion-Focused therapy (EFT) offers a promising alternative to support individuals suffering from PGD. METHODS/DESIGN: This protocol describes a two-arm …

Behavioral interactions and emotional engagement with loss-related objects in bereavement: associations with grief symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: Grief involves attachment- related regulatory processes through which individuals adapt to separation from the deceased. Loss-related objects (i.e., emotionally significant belongings of the deceased) may reflect may reflect externalized expressions of proximity-seeking, yet their association with grief symptoms remains understudied. AIMS: This study examines the role of loss-related objects in the grieving process by investigating their associations with attachment styles, difficulties in emotion regulation, and grief symptom severity.
