The main aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary guidelines in promoting the mobility of people with dementia in 20 German nursing homes. The study was based on a semi-experimental design [pre-post design with intervention (IG) and control group]. The statistical analyses revealed a significantly slower decline of the ability to walk among the residents of the IG than among the controls. With regard to other outcome measures the results were less clear.

Tobacco use among individuals with behavioral health conditions is higher than in the general population and a leading cause for morbidity and early mortality. This study examines a value-based payment (VBP) model to incentivize provision of tobacco cessation counseling (TCC) and pharmacological treatment with varenicline among 38 behavioral health homes (a person-centered approach to coordinating comprehensive healthcare in behavioral health service settings for individuals with chronic behavioral and physical health conditions) within a non-profit Medicaid behavioral health managed care netw

PURPOSE: The impact of moving out of nursing homes into community-based settings for adults with cerebral palsy was assessed by comparing the health and community functioning of movers and non-movers at time 1 and 3 years later at time 2.
SUBJECTS: The sample included 83 non-movers and 28 movers age 30 years and older who initially were living in nursing homes. The majority of residents had severe to profound mental retardation. The movers transferred to 15 community-based settings between 1 and 3 years (mean of 2 years) prior to the time 2 assessment. Assessments of residents at baseline and

INTRODUCTION: In this qualitative study, care providers from long-term care homes were interviewed to explore how they experienced, coped with, and adapted to care shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: Thirteen multidisciplinary care providers and 24 supervisory and administrative staff participated in either a focus group or individual interview between July 2021 and February 2022. Participants were front-line care providers in 5 urban long-term care homes in western Canada.
RESULTS: Care providers described negative impacts on residents and family members related to service deliver

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of home-and-workplace combined exercise on physical function, depression, and work-related disability in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
METHODS: This study adopted a non-randomized quasi-experimental design. Fifty-two patients were recruited: home-and-workplace combined exercise (n = 17), home exercise (n = 18), and control group (n = 17).
RESULTS: The home-and-workplace combined exercise group showed improvement in spinal mobility and pulmonary function and significantly lower absenteeism and overwork impact than the h

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is one of the leading causes of dependency among older people and poses a critical challenge for long-term care systems. Despite the importance of the issue, national data on the prevalence of dementia in residential care homes remain limited.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational, and institution-based study was conducted within the framework of the SINDIA project. The study was based on an online survey addressed to the technical directors of residential care homes for older people in Portugal, carried out between January and July 2024. The questionnaire collected

BACKGROUND: Animal-assisted services, specifically animal-assisted support programs (AASPs, pet therapy, animal-assisted therapy, animal-assisted activities), are promising programs that may improve the mental health and overall well-being of older adults living with and without dementia in long-term care (LTC) homes. Few studies have explored the perspectives of residents and LTC staff regarding AASPs for older adults. This study aimed to identify the initial perspectives of LTC staff regarding the feasibility, acceptability, and other factors influencing the implementation of a live AASP wit

Care home residents are vulnerable to severe outcomes from infections such as COVID-19 and influenza. However, measures to control outbreaks, such as care home closures to visitors and new admissions, have a detrimental impact on their quality of life. Many infections and outbreaks could be prevented but the first step is to measure them reliably. This is challenging in care homes due to the lack of data and research infrastructure. During the pandemic, the VIVALDI study measured COVID-19 infections in residents and staff by partnering with care providers and using routinely collected data. Th

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of dementia-care mapping (DCM) for institutionalised people with dementia has been demonstrated in an explanatory cluster-randomised controlled trial (cRCT) with two DCM researchers carrying out the DCM intervention. In order to be able to inform daily practice, we studied DCM effectiveness in a pragmatic cRCT involving a wide range of care homes with trained nursing staff carrying out the intervention.
METHODS: Dementia special care units were randomly assigned to DCM or usual care. Nurses from the intervention care homes received DCM training and conducted the

BACKGROUND: Elderly people are considered to be in the risk group for vitamin D deficiency. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of nursing interventions and sunlight exposure to reach optimum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels by individuals living in nursing homes.
METHODOLOGY: Randomized controlled experimental study was carried out in June-August 2018 period in the nursing home. The question form, standardized mini mental test, Fitzpatrick skin typing questionnaire and Katz Index of activities of daily living were applied. Individuals in the intervention group (n=20)

BACKGROUND: Extensive hot water burns (HWB) are common at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital (RCWMCH). The majority are caused by kettle scalds. These burn injuries usually affect toddlers living in poor socio-economic circumstances. The majority of these injuries are preventable.
AIM: This trial aims to demonstrate the acceptability and functionality of the Kettle Strap as a kettle safety device. The feedback will be used for a public awareness program marketed by the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Southern Africa and ChildSafe as part of their mandate to reduce kettle relat

It is often observed that pain causes substantial problems for nursing home residents. However, there has been little research about the prevalence of pain for nursing home residents in Japan. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of pain in older adults living in nursing homes in Japan by using self-reporting and the Abbey Pain Scale-Japanese version (APS-J) and to explore factors related to pain. This is a descriptive study. Residents in two Special Nursing Homes for the Elderly in Tokyo, Japan, were asked to participate in this study, with the exclusion of short-term temporary resident

A benefit-cost analysis was conducted to compare services in community residences versus an institution for 11 individuals with severe mental retardation and challenging behaviors who had been moved from an institution to a community setting. Effects that were not readily quantifiable in economic terms also were examined. Overall, the community-based program costs represented slight public savings over costs of the state institution. However, community living netted significant increases in variables such as resident's social networks, opportunities for integrated activities, and income.

BACKGROUND: Urinary Incontinence (UI) is highly prevalent in older residents of nursing homes. For many, management consists of using appropriate products (pads) maintained by a check and change regimen; this is often poorly managed. Digital health technology devices, like urine saturation sensors, may aid ensure timely change of pads. This study examined the efficacy and safety of the use of the TENA SmartCare Change Indicator (Change Indicator) device for nursing home residents with UI.
METHODS: Cluster randomised controlled trial of device use in older nursing home residents with UI, compa

BACKGROUND: Low physical activity in care home residents brings about negative mental health consequences, such as higher levels of depression and loneliness. With advancements in communication technology, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, the feasibility and effectiveness of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a digital Physical Activity (PA) resource in care homes deserve more research attention. A realist evaluation was used to uncover influencing factors of a feasibility study implementation to inform how a digital music and movement programme would work and under what circumst

3 groups of elderly people (65-80 years) were studied as regards their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) concentrations, their dietary vitamin D intake and sunlight exposure during 1 year: group 1 (long-stay geriatric patients); group 2 (residents at an old people's home), and group 3 (elderly people living in their own homes). Young adults (30-50 years) served as controls. The 25-OH-D concentration in group 1 was significantly lower during the whole year than in any other group and the concentration in group 2 was significantly lower than in group 3 and the controls. The low 25-OH-D level i
