Neural mechanisms of hair growth control.

Clinical and experimental observations have long suggested that skin nerves have "trophic" functions in hair follicle development, growth and/or cycling, even though the molecular and cellular basis of the underlying neuroepithelial interactions has remained obscure. Here, we critically review currently available evidence arguing in favor of or against the existence of neural mechanisms of hair growth control, and outline why the murine hair cycle provides an excellent experimental system for characterizing and manipulating piloneural interactions. Summarizing relevant, recent data from the C5

Neurotrophic keratopathy: current challenges and future prospects.

Neurotrophic keratopathy (NK), or neurotrophic keratitis, is a degenerative condition that results from decreased innervation to the cornea. The cornea is innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. Neurotrophic keratopathy is most commonly caused by herpes keratitis however, any condition that disrupts the normal corneal innervation can cause NK. Neurotrophic keratopathy is a clinical diagnosis and is classified into three stages based on the disease severity. Stage 1 has mild epithelial defects, such as punctate keratopathy, stage 2 disease has persistent epithelial defects,

Correlation between religiosity, family functioning, and factors associated with substance use among secondary school students in high-risk areas.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use in adolescents poses a complex societal challenge, undermining nation-building and socioeconomic growth. Religiosity encompasses a person's religious beliefs, habits, and involvement in spiritual activities. Family functioning refers to a family unit's overall health and operation, including communication, emotional bonding, support, roles, and behavioral control. Both aspects are pivotal in determining substance use in adolescents. This study assesses the association between religiosity and family functioning and determines factors concerning substance use among ad

New developments in the management of achondroplasia.

Achondroplasia is the most common form of disproportionate short stature. A dominantly inherited FGFR3 mutation permanently activates the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) and its downstream mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway. This inhibits chondrocyte differentiation and puts a break on growth plate function, in addition to causing serious medical complications such as foramen magnum and spinal stenosis and upper airway narrowing. A great deal has been learned about complications and consequences of FGFR3 activation and management guidance is evolving aimed t

Bioactivity of volatile organic compounds produced by Pseudomonas tolaasii.

Pseudomonas tolaasii is the main bacterial pathogen of several mushroom species. In this paper we report that strains of P. tolaasii produce volatile substances inducing in vitro mycelia growth inhibition of Pleurotus ostreatus and P. eryngii, and Agaricus bisporus and P. ostreatus basidiome tissue blocks brown discoloration. P. tolaasii strains produced the volatile ammonia but not hydrogen cyanide. Among the volatiles detected by GC-MS, methanethiol, dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), and 1-undecene were identified. The latter, when assayed individually as pure compounds, led to similar effects noti

Mycobacteria isolated from angkor monument sandstones grow chemolithoautotrophically by oxidizing elemental sulfur.

To characterize sulfate-producing microorganisms from the deteriorated sandstones of Angkor monuments in Cambodia, strains of Mycobacterium spp. were isolated from most probable number-positive cultures. All five strains isolated were able to use both elemental sulfur (S(0)) for chemolithoautotrophic growth and organic substances for chemoorganoheterotrophic growth. Results of phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses indicated that all five isolates were rapid growers of the genus Mycobacterium and were most similar to Mycobacterium cosmeticum and Mycobacterium pallens. Chemolithoautotrophic growt

Heroin abuse during pregnancy: Effects on perinatal outcome and early childhood growth.

Heroin abuse during pregnancy is associated with 1) fetal growth retardation and neonatal withdrawal syndrome in infants and 2) an increased frequency of abruptio placentae, sexually transmitted diseases, and other complications in mothers. Based on the findings of several small cohort studies, postnatal growth and development of infants whose mothers were addicted to heroin during pregnancy appears to fall within normal variation. In the present study, information about use of heroin and other substances during pregnancy in relation to neonatal outcome was analyzed in 47 heroin-abusing mother

Biological control of a novel strain Bacillus velezensis BFWR11 against tomato early blight.

As a globally important vegetable crop, tomato suffers significant yield losses due to early blight, a fungal disease caused by Alternaria solani. This study investigated the antifungal activity and plant growth-promoting effects of a novel strain, Bacillus velezensis BFWR11. Genomic analysis identified gene clusters responsible for synthesizing metabolites, including lipopeptides and cell wall-degrading enzymes. Among these were clusters for ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs), a class known for their potent antibacterial properties. Additionally, some k

Phthalates and fetal growth velocity: tracking down the suspected links.

Fetuses that have not achieved their full growth potential are associated with adverse perinatal and long-term outcomes; thus, it is essential to identify environmental factors that can potentially impair normal intrauterine development. Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), substances capable of altering the homeostasis of the endocrine system, are thought to play a role in restriction of growth velocity, with phthalates being among the most common EDCs to which pregnant women are exposed. Such exposure can potentially lead to changes to the epigenome, placental structure, and hormone functi

South Carolina tuberculosis genotype cluster investigation: a tale of substance abuse and recurrent disease.

The South Carolina Tuberculosis (TB) Control Division ranked all the TB genotype clusters (two or more cases with matching genotypes) in the state based on the number of cases. The largest cluster, PCR00002, was investigated to determine if the cluster represented recent Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission, and if so, to identify associated risk factors. The PCR0002 cluster, which included pediatric cases, clearly represented recent M. tuberculosis transmission. The two primary factors contributing to cluster growth were substance abuse and recurrent TB disease. Elimination of ongoing M. t

From tongue to eye: A biomimetic colorimetric sensor for umami substances based on taste receptor and plasmonic gold nanoparticles.

Taste perception plays a crucial role in human survival and food quality assessment. Traditional methods for detecting taste substances suffer from limitations such as complex instrumental analysis and subjective evaluation, highlighting the need for developing simple and quantitative methods. Biomimetic sensors that mimic biological sensation to achieve taste evaluation while ensuring objective quantification and high sensitivity have emerged as a promising strategy. In this study, we designed a biomimetic colorimetric sensor based on plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and taste receptors.

Essential Oils and Melatonin as Functional Ingredients in Dogs.

The use of nutraceuticals or functional ingredients is increasingly widespread in human food; their use is also widespread in animal feed. These natural compounds generally come from plant materials and comprise a wide range of substances of a very diverse chemical nature. In animals, these compounds, so-called phytogenics, are used to obtain improvements in feed production/stability and also as functional components with repercussions on animal health. Along with polyphenols, isoprenoid compounds represent a family of substances with wide applications in therapy and pet nutrition. Essential o

Doping and thrombosis in sports.

Historically, humans have long sought to enhance their "athletic" performance to increase body weight, aggressiveness, mental concentration and physical strength, contextually reducing fatigue, pain, and improving recovery. Although regular training is the mainstay for achieving these targets, the ancillary use of ergogenic aids has become commonplace in all sports. The demarcation between ergogenic aids and doping substances or practices is continuously challenging and mostly based on perceptions regarding the corruption of the fairness of competition and the potential side effects or adverse

Characterisation of the affinity of different anabolics and synthetic hormones to the human androgen receptor, human sex hormone binding globulin and to the bovine progestin receptor.

For the steroidal growth promoters trenbolone acetate (TBA) and melengestrol acetate (MGA) neither the complete spectrum of biological activities nor the potential endocrine disrupting activity of their excreted metabolites in the environment is fully understood. The potency of these substances in [3H]dihydrotestosterone ([3H]-DHT) displacement from the recombinant human androgen receptor (rhAR) and from human sex-hormone binding globulin (hSHBG) was evaluated. In addition, the potency for [3H]-ORG2058 displacement from the bovine uterine progestin receptor (bPR) was tested. For comparison, di

Detection of teratogenic substances in acidic mine water samples using the frog embryo teratogenesis assay--Xenopus (FETAX).

The FETAX (Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay--Xenopus) whole embryo bioassay has been developed to screen for environmental substances that cause birth defects. We have used this assay to test its effectiveness in working with actual water samples from the field. Tar Creek is contaminated by discharges from abandoned lead and zinc mines. In addition to high concentrations of zinc, iron and other metals, water samples are routinely low in pH and oxygen content. The pH values of three Tar Creek sample sites were below the established tolerance limits of the embryos. Therefore, one group of samples

Effect of HIV and substance use disorder comorbidity on the placenta, fetal and maternal health outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders and HIV infection have a bidirectional relationship. People who use illicit drugs are at increased risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, and people living with HIV/AIDS are at increased risk of using substances due to disease-related complications like depression and HIV-associated dementia. There is no adequate evidence on the effect of HIV/AIDS and substance use disorder comorbidity-related effects on placental, fetal, maternal and neonatal outcomes globally. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will search articles written in the English language until 30 January 2024, from

"You are helping from the heart not just from the head": a systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis of the experiences of peer workers working with people experiencing homelessness and substance use.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, substance use and homelessness services have peer workers, those with lived or living experience of substance use and homelessness, who provide support to those experiencing similar challenges. While research regarding the effectiveness of such peer workers in helping others achieve better outcomes is growing, little is known about their experiences in this role. METHODS: A systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted to better understand the experiences of peer workers who have lived/living experience of substance use and homelessness who are p

Antibiotic consumption in developing countries defies global commitments: an overview on Brazilian growth in consumption.

Faster spread of epidemics has turned local concerns into global crises; antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is being considered a major threat to public health in the twenty-first century. Antibiotic misuse plays a great role in accelerated AMR; thus, understanding and discussing consumption patterns has been a trend topic over the past years. Developing countries, such as Brazil, have high growth rates in antibiotic consumption, potentially impacting global environmental safety. This study presents the compiled information from the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) on antibiotic dispens

Zinc deficiency inhibits the direct growth effect of growth hormone on the tibia of hypophysectomized rats.

The effect of zinc deficiency on the direct-growth effect of growth hormone (GH) on tibia growth in hypophysectomized rats was studied. There were three dietary groups. Zinc deficient (ZD) group (0.9 mg/kg diet), control (C) group (66 mg/kg diet) and zinc adequate pair fed (PF) group (66 mg zinc/kg diet). All rats in each group received local infusion of recombinant human-growth hormone (hGH) (1 microgram/d), except for half of the animals in the control group, which were sham-treated, receiving vehicle infusion only. The substances were infused continuously for 13 d by osmotic minipumps throu

Bacterial nutritional approach to mechanisms of oxygen toxicity.

Gottlieb, Sheldon F. (Union Carbide Corp., Tonawanda, N.Y.). Bacterial nutritional approach to mechanisms of oxygen toxicity. J. Bacteriol. 92:1021-1027. 1966.-Inhibition by oxygen of growth of the bacterium Achromobacter P6 was reversed by amino acid supplements. The reversal of oxygen-induced growth inhibition was not due to the presence of reducing substances in the growth medium. Oxygen primarily exerts a bacteriostatic effect. The oxygen inhibition of growth occurred over a wide pH range. Oxygen inhibition of growth was observed when 1-amino-2-propanol, acetate, lactate, citrate, or gluco
