Factors associated with halitosis reported by parents/caregivers in individuals with Down syndrome.

AIMS: Data on halitosis among individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are scarce. The aim was to evaluate factors associated with the occurrence of halitosis reported by parents/caregivers (P/Cs) in individuals with DS. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in non-governmental assistance institutions in the State of Minas Gerais-Brazil. P/Cs have answered an electronic questionnaire with sociodemographic, behavioral and oral health data. Factors associated with halitosis were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression. The sample comprised 227 P/Cs (age 48.8 ± 13.2 years; …

Investigation of volatile sulfur compound level and halitosis in patients with gingivitis and periodontitis.

This study aimed to measure the levels of volatile sulfur compounds and investigate the occurrence of halitosis in patients with gingivitis and periodontitis. Additionally, the incidence rates of gingivitis and periodontitis in patients with halitosis were investigated. Through various statistical analyses, we attempted to determine the relationship between periodontal disease and halitosis. One-hundred-and-four participants (52 females and 52 males, mean age: 46.49 ± 16.03 years) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, comprising 33 healthy controls, 43 patients with gingivitis, and 28 p…

Halitosis and Pain Threshold of Peri-Implant Tissues: An Observational Cohort Study.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the halitosis and pain threshold of the peri-implant soft tissues in individuals rehabilitated with implant-supported prostheses. Forty-eight subjects were divided into four groups (n = 12) according to their prosthetic rehabilitation: single-tooth fixed prosthesis, multi-tooth fixed prosthesis, overdentures, and the Brånemark protocol. Halitosis was measured using a halimeter, whereas the pain threshold was measured using Von Frey monofilaments. Measurements were taken before (t0) and 30 days after (t1) placement of healing caps, and at the time of (t2) and…

Clinical Trial Evaluating Quality of Life in Patients with Intra-Oral Halitosis.

Halitosis is considered to be extremely unattractive in the context of social interactions. The main research objective of this study was to evaluate whether intra-oral halitosis may impact patients' quality of life (QOL). One hundred generally healthy adult participants complaining about oral malodor and diagnosed with intra-oral halitosis were enrolled in this study. For halitosis diagnosis, a gas chromatography (GC) analysis by the Oral Chroma portable device was used. QOL assessment was based on the Short Form 36-item Health Survey (SF-36). The respondents had the highest scores in the phy…

Small, but smelly: the importance of Solobacterium moorei in halitosis and other human infections.

Solobacterium moorei (S. moorei) has been described as Gram-positive, non spore forming, obligate anaerobic bacillus from human feces. The t … mass spectrometry and DNA sequencing. Regarding its pathogenic role, the relevance of S. moorei in halitosis (oral malodor) has a good standing, as it has been suggested by multiple studies, while the isolation of these bacteria from invasive infections is very rare; there are only a few reports available in the literature, regarding infections outside the …

Instant and freshness effect of mouth rinses on type 1 (oral) halitosis.

Hygiene deficiency causes type 1 (oral) halitosis. There are short and long-term studies on the anti-halitosis effect of mouth rinses but less knowledge on their instant effects. The aim of this study was to compare instant and freshness effects of 8 mouth rinses on type 1 halitosis. Ninety self-reported halitosis patients (19-58 y.o., median 31) were randomly divided into 9 groups. Cysteine (20 mM) challenge test was applied to obtain maximum halitosis level in the mouth of each patient. Single use of 8 different mouth rinses (R1-R8) and tap water (R0) were tested on each group (n=10). Afterw…

The Halitosis Consequences Inventory: psychometric properties and relationship with social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals who complain of halitosis experience psychological consequences that can lead to social, professional, and affective limitations. Research has identified social anxiety disorder (SAD) as the most common psychopathology associated to halitosis complaints. Combining these two lines of research, we sought to determine the validity of the Halitosis Consequences Inventory (ICH), a scale designed to assess the psychological consequences of halitosis complaints. We also investigated the relationship between these consequences and SAD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were …

Halitosis: a review of the etiologic factors and association with systemic conditions and its management.

Halitosis is a general term defined as an unpleasant or offensive odor emanating from the breath, arising from either oral or nonoral sources. Extraoral factors, such as ear-nose-throat conditions or gastrointestinal, respiratory, and systemic diseases, may also contribute to oral malodor. Although, halitosis has a multifactorial etiology, local factors play an important role in the majority of cases. Halitosis may lead to significant personal discomfort and social embarrassment. Assessment of halitosis can be performed using organoleptic measurements, sulfide monitoring, gas chromatography, m…

Halitosis management by the general dental practitioner--results of an international consensus workshop.

Clinical investigations on patients suffering from halitosis clearly reveal that in the vast majority of cases the source for an offensive breath odor can be found within the oral cavity (90%). Based on these studies, the main sources for intra-oral halitosis where tongue coating, gingivitis/periodontitis or a combination of the two. Thus, it is perfectly logical that general dental practitioners (GDPs) should be able to manage intra-oral halitosis under the conditions found in a normal dental practice. However, GDPs who are interested in diagnosing and treating halitosis are challenged to inc…

Gastroesophageal reflux, dental erosion, and halitosis in epidemiological surveys: a systematic review.

In published studies, it has been suggested that dental wear is associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This systematic review was carried out to evaluate the association of GERD, dental erosion, and halitosis and to compare the indices adopted in epidemiological surveys. The Medline database (until October, 2011) was searched systematically to identify studies evaluating the prevalence of oral alterations, such as dental erosion and halitosis, in patients with GERD symptoms. Two reviewers analyzed all reports and the selected studies were evaluated according to the quality of …

Dimethylsulphidemia: the significance of dimethyl sulphide in extra-oral, blood borne halitosis.

Halitosis is a symptom and not a diagnosis. Rather, the topic represents a spectrum of disorders, including intra-oral, otorhinolaryngological, metabolic, systemic, pulmonary, psychological and neurological conditions. Halitosis may be the third most common trigger for patients to seek dental care and can cause significant impact on patient quality of life. About 10% of all genuine halitosis cases are attributed to extra-oral processes. Some authorities have reported that the nasal cavity and the oropharynx are the most common sites of origin of extra-oral halitosis. However, recent evidence a…

The role of dentists as a stop-gap in the initial management of patients with delusional halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: This article proposes a 'stop-gap protocol'for the initial management of delusional halitosis, which dental practitioners can apply where a multidisciplinary team of dentists and mental health experts (psychiatrist and psychologist) cannot be assembled. METHODS: A 4-year prospective study of delusional halitosis patients managed with a 3-step 'Stop-gap protocol' is presented in this paper, to demonstrate our experience in applying the 'Stop-gap protocol'. RESULTS: Twenty three (23) patients diagnosed with delusional halitosis were managed with the 'Stop-gap protocol' within the st…

Findings, diagnoses and results of a halitosis clinic over a seven year period.

Halitosis or bad breath is a taboo subject that is a widespread problem in the general population. Causes of bad breath can be multifactorial and long time sufferers can be marred from deep psychological stress. Because nine out of ten cases have an oral cause, the initial inquiry should be with a dentist. In a retrospective study from February 2003 to February 2010, the halitosis clinic at the University of Basel analyzed data from 465 patient medical histories. Study objectives evaluated the causes of halitosis, gender distribution and treatment success. All patients reported to have suffere…

The effect of Breezy candy on halitosis: a double-blind, controlled, and randomized study.

Halitosis (bad breath) is a common condition that is socially crippling for vast parts of the population and results from malodorous volatile sulfur compounds, which are by-products of oral bacteria. In this doubled-blind, randomized study, 75 subjects with halitosis were evaluated. The participants were treated with or without abrasive microcapsules (candy) containing zinc gluconate 0.5%, propolis 2%, and a combination of both (zinc 0.25% and propolis 1%). The halitosis was assessed by a Halimeter, a portable instrument that measures the emission of volatile sulfur compounds at different time…

Effects of the medicinal plants Curcuma zedoaria and Camellia sinensis on halitosis control.

Volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) are the gases mainly responsible for halitosis (bad breath). The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of medicinal plants on halitosis control. Two commonly used plants were tested: Curcuma zedoaria and Camellia sinensis (green tea). These plants were prepared as an aqueous solution and used as mouthwashes, compared with a standard mouthwash of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate and a placebo (water). The experiment was conducted with 30 volunteers from the School of Dentistry of São Jose dos Campos, Univ. Estadual Paulista - UNESP, SP, Brazil. Each volu…

Halitosis--a common medical and social problem. A review on pathology, diagnosis and treatment.

Bad breath is a condition that has health and social implications. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the classification of halitosis, it's etiology, it's prevalence, diagnosis and treatment strategies for the condition. Halitosis is affecting about 25-30% of world's population. It includes categories of genuine halitosis, pseudo-halitosis and halitophobia. It is believed that in 80-90% of cases halitosis origins in the oral cavity and the most common causes are: gingival pathologies, caries and poor oral hygiene. Extraoral sources of halitosis are responsible for 10-20% of all case…
