Brodie's Abscess of the Thumb: A Rare Complication of a Dog Bite.

Brodie's abscess is a rare form of subacute osteomyelitis, most commonly affecting the metaphysis of long bones in pediatric patients. Involvement of the hand is exceptional, and its indolent course combined with nonspecific imaging features can make diagnosis challenging. Here, we describe a case of Brodie's abscess following an animal bite and compare it with the few reported cases of Brodie's abscess of the hand in the literature.

Tissue expansion for reconstruction of an unusual form of complex syndactyly.

Tissue expanders can be used over the dorsum of hand and fingers to increase available tissue for flap coverage after release of syndactyly. Herein, we presented an 18-year-old man who had an unusual complex syndactyly in the middle and ring fingers of his right hand. He had also complete fusion of the proximal phalanges. In this report, we described the application of tissue expander to cover separated exposed bones.

Staged Thumb Reconstruction Via Primary Ectopic Banking of Detached Skeletal Elements and Amputated Thumbs With Secondary Replantation.

BACKGROUND: Extensive injuries involving the thenar region and traumatic thumb amputation, with or without involvement of additional digits, present complex reconstructive challenges. In cases where the severed thumb remains anatomically intact, immediate replantation or ectopic replantation using another digit may not be feasible. Following debridement and closure of the thenar region, the absence of the thumb can significantly compromise hand function. Reconstruction using the autologous intact severed thumb, along with detached metacarpal and phalangeal bones preserved within healthy tissue

Which sport disciplines other than diving are associated with the emergence of aseptic osteonecrosis? A narrative review.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the present work was to review the current literature about sport disciplines other than diving which are associated with the emergence of aseptic osteonecrosis, identify the possible causative mechanisms, and analyze the diagnostic modalities and treatment options. A literature search was performed through PubMed and Google Scholar until December 2024. Search terms were "sport" in combination with "osteonecrosis", and "bone necrosis", respectively. A total of 23 studies reporting on a total of 54 cases (56 affected bones) could be identified. No study was published befo

Growth and development in a girl with pseudohypoparathyroidism and hypothyroidism. A longitudinal study.

Statural growth, physical and skeletal development of a girl with pseudohypoparathyroidism and primary hypothyroidism were analysed in a longitudinal study, which lasted for 12 years from the age of 0.8 years. Growth in height, which slowed down when thyroid therapy was withheld, was within the normal range. Still, as a result of early puberty, the girl became a small adult. Skeletal age was advanced over chronological years by an average of 2.7 years. This rapid skeletal development was more pronounced in the tubular bones than in the round bones of the hand. Two of the five metacarpals of th

Giant Cell Tumor of the Proximal Phalanx: Report of two Cases Treated by Two Different Methods and Review of the Literature.

The hand is an extremely rare site for giant cell tumor (GCT). There are only a few reported cases of GCT including the hand, and even fewer reporting involvement of phalanges. GCTs in small bones are typically more aggressive and have higher local recurrence and rate of metastasis in younger patients compared to long bone involvement, so the treatment is more clinically challenging in the hand. In this study, we present the management of giant cell tumors of the proximal phalanxin two patients treated with two different method; ray resection and arthrodesis using an iliac crest graft. Hand and wrist injuries: Part I. Nonemergent evaluation.

Diagnosis of upper extremity injuries depends on knowledge of basic anatomy and biomechanics of the hand and wrist. The wrist is composed of two rows of carpal bones. Flexor and extensor tendons cross the wrist to allow function of the hand and digits. The ulnar, median, and radial nerves provide innervation of the hand and wrist. A systematic primary and secondary examination of the hand and wrist includes assessment of active and passive range of motion of the wrist and digits, and dynamic stability testing. The most commonly fractured bone of the wrist is the scaphoid, and the most common l

[Perilunate dislocations].

The wrist extends anatomically and functionally from the distal forearm to the metacarpal bones and encompasses the entire carpal region. The large number of bones and joints involved are stabilized in a highly complex system of extrinsic and intrinsic ligaments, which enables a variety of different movements and stability in all positions for the best possible use of the hands. While injuries to individual ligaments or joints, most commonly the scapholunate (SL) ligament, can cause major problems the injuries associated with perilunate dislocations and dislocated fractures represent one of th

Melorheostosis: unusual presentation in a girl.

Melorheostosis is a rare bone disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by tense and erythematous skin, contractures and shortening of the affected limbs. Radiographs reveal hyperostosis in long bones resembling melting wax, and spotty or patchy endostic deposits in short bones. An 11-year-old girl showed, since birth, contractural deformities in the right hand without bone abnormalities. At the age of 12 months, she complained of soft tissue tightness in the right buttock. At 3 years, limitation of flexion and extension of the right knee was evident. Radiographs revealed findings typic

Skeletal growth in normal and pathological conditions.

The authors describe the morphological and functional differences between the various systems of enchondral ossification of the metaphysis and epiphysis of the long bones, the short bones and the zones of insertion of tendons and ligaments. They discuss the relationships between the various types of enchondral ossification, the rates of skeletal growth and a number of orthopaedic growth disorders. In deformity of the lower limb, skeletal growth produces spontaneous correction in the majority of cases. Spinal abnormalities, on the other hand, tend to deteriorate during the period of rapid growt

[Diagnosis of unusual fractures of the wrist bones].

Fractures of the navicular bone are the most frequent fractures in the region of the wrist bone. Injuries of the other carpal bones are often primarily overlooked, since the examiner commands over less routine in diagnosing these rare fractures and the carpal bones are often superimposed over one another. We examined 9.723 x-ray films of the hand performed because of suspected fracture of the os naviculare, in order to find out how often lesions of the carpal bones - with the exception of those of the scaphoid bone - were discovered via the x-ray series of the os naviculare manus. For each ind

A Case of Rheumatoid Nodulosis with Extensive Bone Erosion by a Rheumatoid Nodule in the Foot.

Rheumatoid nodulosis is a rare variant of rheumatoid arthritis, characterized by similar but milder joint and systemic symptoms compared to typical rheumatoid arthritis. We report a case of rheumatoid nodulosis in a 61-year-old woman with a 6-month history of swelling and pain in her right foot, with subsequent swelling on the back of her right hand, in her left wrist, and over the right tibial tubercle. Radiography showed well-defined radiolucent lesions in several bones of the right foot and the left hand, without narrowing of joint spaces. The 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomogr

Growth and maturation in pseudo-hypoparathyroidism: a longitudinal study in 5 patients.

In 4 girls and 1 boy with pseudo-hypoparathyroidism growth and physical maturation were followed longitudinally for 7-13 years until adult height had been reached. As a result of early puberty and cessation of growth all patients were relatively shorter as adults than in their childhood years. The difference between average height at the age of 8.0 years and average adult height was 2.25 SD. This observation offers an explanation for the finding in the literature that short stature is more common in adults with this disease than in children. Skeletal age was advanced in all cases and the devel

Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery Free Flap for Coverage of Hand Injuries.

Open de-gloving hand injuries with exposed tendons and bones require coverage by a flap. Conventionally used groin or abdominal flaps are cumbersome to patients due to extensive dressing and prolonged passive positioning of the hand until pedicle division. Superficial circumflex iliac artery (SCIA) flap is evolved from a traditional groin flap, and because of its thinness, pliability, and concealed donor site, it is an ideal option for single-stage reconstruction of traumatic hand defects avoiding discomforting passive hand position, joint stiffness, and unexpected flap avulsion which were ass

Radiographic features of hand osteoarthritis in adult Kashin-Beck Disease (KBD): the Yongshou KBD study.

OBJECTIVE: Kashin-Beck Disease (KBD) is a rare and severe osteoarthropathy endemic to China. We evaluated the frequency and patterns of hand radiographic osteoarthritis (rOA) in adults with and without KBD. METHODS: Han Chinese (N = 438) from Yongshou County of central China underwent right hand radiography for determining case status. Presence of KBD was based on characteristic radiographic deformities of articular ends of bones including articular surface depression, carpal crowding, any subchondral bone deformities in the proximal end of phalanges or first metacarpal bone, or the distal en

The BoneXpert method for automated determination of skeletal maturity.

Bone age rating is associated with a considerable variability from the human interpretation, and this is the motivation for presenting a new method for automated determination of bone age (skeletal maturity). The method, called BoneXpert, reconstructs, from radiographs of the hand, the borders of 15 bones automatically and then computes "intrinsic" bone ages for each of 13 bones (radius, ulna, and 11 short bones). Finally, it transforms the intrinsic bone ages into Greulich Pyle (GP) or Tanner Whitehouse (TW) bone age. The bone reconstruction method automatically rejects images with abnormal b

Gastric cancer acrometastases to all digits of one hand following closed intramedullary nailing.

Metastatic malignant tumor of the hand is unusual and the most common site of the primary cancer is lung. Acrometastases to the phalanges of the hand usually involve a single bone, while those proximal to the phalanges often involve multiple bones. Metastasis to the hand from gastrointestinal cancer, particularly from gastric cancer, is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only five cases have been reported in the literature to date and there has been no reported case following closed intramedullary nailing for metastatic diaphyseal fracture of an ipsilateral long bone. We present a very unusual

[Results following isolated fourth ray resection].

BACKGROUND: After partial resection of the fourth finger ray, many hand surgeons perform a transposition of the fifth ray to the position of the fourth ray. Others, us included, resect the fourth ray in total through exarticulation in the carpometacarpal joint and tightly readapt the deep transverse metacarpal ligament, assuming that the gap between the third and fifth metacarpal bones will be sufficiently reduced through spontaneous radial translocation of the fifth ray. The aim of this retrospective study was to examine the clinical, radiological and patient-reported results after total rese
