BACKGROUND: The development of an intraparenchymal cyst following deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery is an uncommon complication that lacks a clearly defined management strategy. The pathophysiology is not known and may be related to perielectrode edema or cerebrospinal fluid tracking. Previous case reports have described various therapies for symptomatic cysts, including hardware removal or conservative treatment with steroids.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a male patient with bilateral DBS of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus for management of essential tremor, who developed…

DISCUSSION: Arthroscopy-assisted subcoracoid suture provided satisfactory clinical results. There were no cases of implant failure, probably because the technique caused no iatrogenic coracoid trauma. Clavicle button irritation sometimes required …

BACKGROUND: displaced transverse fractures of the olecranon are the most common fractures occurring in the elbow in adults that requires operative intervention.
METHODS: a literature search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct/Scopus, Google Scholar and Google using the keywords 'olecranon', 'fracture', 'internal fixation' and 'tension band wiring', with no limit for time or restrictions to language.
RESULTS: thirty-one clinical articles were selected: 20 retrospective studies, 9 prospective cohort studies, and 2 randomized control trials. The CMS ranged from 18 to 66 (mea

PURPOSE: This article reviews cases of nasolacrimal obstruction (NLO) secondary to maxillofacial hardware placement.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed at a single institution from 2012 to 2017 of patients with NLO following maxillofacial reconstruction. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University of California, San Francisco, adhered to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki, and was Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliant. Patients were included if external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) confirmed previously placed maxillofacia

Dysphonia and dysphagia are often observed among patients presenting to the otolaryngology clinic. One of the more common etiologies includes iatrogenic injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) as a known complication of head and neck surgeries such as thyroidectomy or anterior approaches to the cervical spine. Most often, RLN injury occurs in this context due to traction or transection of the nerve. No reports on delayed presentation of RLN injury from the extrusion of cervical spine hardware (screw) could be found in the peer-reviewed literature. We present a case of a 63-year-old woman

Failure of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) may be due to hardware problems, migration of electrodes and, in the long-term, plasticity in the spinal cord with habituation to the stimulation current. We describe a series of seven patients who experienced acute therapeutic loss of SCS effects following an acute nociceptive event unrelated to primary pathology. There were no hardware problems. We called this 'Pseudofailure', as the effective stimulation returned in all patients following a period off stimulation or reprogramming. This phenomenon has not been reported previously in the literature. Ov

We analyzed failures of surgical treatment of femoral neck fractures due to osteonecrosis in a consecutive series of 26 patients with an average age of 31 (range, 10 to 49 years). These patients were referred for treatment of osteonecrosis that developed after internal fixation of a fracture of the femoral neck. The average Harris hip score at the time of referral was 59. The length of time from fracture treatment to the development of osteonecrosis averaged 22.5 months (range, 5 months to 13 years). All patients were symptomatic at the time of presentation. Internal fixation used at the time

Clavicle fractures represent one of the most frequent type of fractures. However, there is no consensus on the treatment of these fractures … eosynthesis often experience hardware-related discomfort and may require a subsequent procedure for hardware removal. Low profile dual plating might reduce this inconvenient.

BACKGROUND: Extensive wound dehiscence and wide plate and screw exposure in the early weeks following orthopaedic surgery in children is usually managed either by extensive debridement, lavage and secondary closure or hardware removal and external fixation.
PATIENTS: Three children with LCP plate and screws exposure were managed by simple repetitive debridement and local wound care without any IV antibiotics, nor secondary closure or hardware removal. All three cases occurred in the tibia, one following tibial osteotomy in lateral hemimelia with a long history of previous surgeries, one follo…

INTRODUCTION: Proximal femoral osteotomy (PFO) with locking compression plates (LCPs) is effective for treating developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in children. However, plate insertion or removal has a risk of postoperative femoral fractures. The goal of this study was to identify and analyse the association between postoperative femoral fractures after PFO and potential risk factors for these fractures.
METHODS: Six patients with DDH and postoperative femoral fractures were retrospectively reviewed at our hospital from June 2014 to October 2020. There were 2 boys and 4 girls whose ages

We report the case of a 61-year-old woman with right-sided flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon ruptured a month after volar locking plate fixation. Five months after the initial operation, hardware removal and reconstruction of the FPL tendon with the ipsilateral palmaris longus were performed. The proximal stump of the ruptured FPL tendon was found in the space between the distal radius and plate.

Fractures of the coronoid process, which is a key element in anterior elbow joint stability, represent 14% of proximal ulnar fractures. Optimal treatment should stabilize all fractures associated with elbow instability. Different techniques have been described: suture repair, screws, plates… We propose a series of 5 patients who were treated with an original, easy, tension band wiring fixation technique using steel wire with easy hardware removal.
