Physical environment as a catalyst for healthy aging: servicescape, motivation, and well-being in older adult park golf.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Active leisure activities like park golf are crucial for older adults' successful aging. Grounded in the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) paradigm and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study investigated the structural relationships among perceived servicescape, facility image, satisfaction, motivation, and subjective well-being. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed. Data from 264 older adult park golf participants in South Korea were analyzed using structural equation modeling. A phantom variable approach was employed to rigorously test mult

The psycho-social dual-pathway perspective on healthy aging in digital age-friendly environments: longitudinal evidence from China.

BACKGROUND: Attitudes toward one's own aging are closely related to health and well-being in later life. Meanwhile, digitalization during and after the COVID-19 pandemic has changed older adults' access to services, social participation, and everyday health management. Digital inclusion may support healthy aging, but it may also create burdens when digital use is difficult, stressful, or poorly supported. Yet few studies have examined how aging attitudes and digital inclusion are jointly related to health over time. This study investigated the longitudinal relationships among aging attitudes, …

A Longitudinal Study of Changes in Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Functional Connectivity Networks During Healthy Aging.

Background: Vast increases in life expectancy over the last century have led to shifts in population demographics and the emergence of a largely aged population, globally. This has led to a need to understand neurobiological changes associated with healthy aging. Studies on age-related changes in functional connectivity networks have largely been cross-sectional and focused on the default mode network (DMN). The current study investigated longitudinal changes in functional connectivity in multiple resting-state networks over 4 years of aging in cognitively normal older adults. Methods: Resting…

Prevalence, Correlates, and Prognosis of Healthy Vascular Aging in a Western Community-Dwelling Cohort: The Framingham Heart Study.

Hypertension and increased vascular stiffness are viewed as inevitable parts of aging. To elucidate whether the age-related decrease in vascular function is avoidable, we assessed the prevalence, correlates, and prognosis of healthy vascular aging (HVA) in 3196 Framingham Study participants aged ≥50 years. We defined HVA as absence of hypertension and pulse wave velocity <7.6 m/s (mean+2 SD of a reference sample aged <30 years). Overall, 566 (17.7%) individuals had HVA, with prevalence decreasing from 30.3% in people aged 50 to 59 to 1% in those aged ≥70 years. In regression models adjusted fo

Place integration through efforts to support healthy aging in resource frontier communities: the role of voluntary sector leadership.

Resource-dependent communities in hinterland regions of Australia, Canada and elsewhere are rapidly aging, yet many features that distinguish them (e.g., geographic remoteness, small populations, infrastructure built with younger persons in mind) also pose significant challenges for healthy aging. These challenges can lead to substantial gaps in access to formal health and social services, with negative implications for older residents aging-in-place and the development aspirations of resource frontier communities. In this paper, we explore the efforts of voluntary sector leaders to transform …

Diminished vision in healthy aging is associated with increased retinal L-type voltage gated calcium channel ion influx.

Extensive evidence implicates an increase in hippocampal L-type voltage-gated calcium channel (L-VGCC) expression, and ion influx through these channels, in age-related cognitive declines. Here, we ask if this "calcium hypothesis" applies to the neuroretina: Is increased influx via L-VGCCs related to the well-documented but poorly-understood vision declines in healthy aging? In Long-Evans rats we find a significant age-related increase in ion flux through retinal L-VGCCs in vivo (manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI)) that are longitudinally linked with progressive vision declines (optokinetic tracki…

White matter structural integrity in healthy aging adults and patients with Alzheimer disease: a magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Imaging and postmortem studies suggest that frontal lobe white matter (FLWM) volume expands until about the age of 44.6 years and then declines. Postmortem evidence indicates that the structural integrity of myelin sheaths deteriorates during normal aging, especially in late myelinating regions such as the frontal lobes. OBJECTIVES: To assess the integrity of FLWM by magnetic resonance imaging and, thus, to provide an important index of brain aging and its relationship to Alzheimer disease (AD). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Two metropolitan university hospitals and AD

How a healthy lifestyle mediates socioeconomic inequities in healthy ageing and life expectancies: A 20-year cohort of older adults.

Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with various adverse health outcomes, but its association with healthy ageing is less known, and whether adherence to a healthy lifestyle at late-life years can reduce socioeconomic disparities in health requires further investigation. In a 20-year cohort of 33,541 older adults aged ≥65 years across 23 provinces in China, we investigated socioeconomic disparities in mortality and unhealthy ageing considering physical, cognitive, mental, visual, and hearing functions, and evaluated whether adherence to a healthy lifestyle at late-life years can red

Age-Specific Cerebral Vessel Templates Across the Lifespan of Healthy Adults.

Cerebral vasculature plays a critical role in brain function. Accurate characterization of its normative organization and distribution is essential for identifying vascular abnormalities. However, existing cerebrovascular templates do not adequately account for age-related anatomical variability and typically rely on structural-image-driven registration without explicitly leveraging vascular information for alignment. To address these limitations, we present a set of open, age-specific cerebrovascular templates constructed from time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) data of 1,
