INTRODUCTION: Neonates in a NICU experience pain. Based on the cardiovascular and nociceptive systems link, a Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation (NIPE) monitor was designed to assess pain. The use of α2-agonists as analgesic-sedative drugs has increased in neonates. Given their effect on the autonomic system, we hypothesized that their use may alter NIPE's measurement capacity.
METHODS: Data were prospectively collected. The included patients were evaluated using combined pain assessment systems.

Monitoring the fetal heartbeat underpins assessment of fetal wellbeing in labour. Although commonly employed in clinical practice, shortcomings remain. A recent review of clinical practice guidelines highlights the variation in definitions of the fetal heart rate that will lead to differences in interpretation. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman who presented for cardiological evaluation having noted a decline in her heart rate on her wearable heart rate monitor. She was found to be in 2:1 atrioventricular block. Subsequent evaluation revealed cardiac and pulmonary sarcoidosis, treated with steroids and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator placement.
