Cutaneous manifestations of Helicobacter cinaedi infection.

Helicobacter cinaedi causes gastroenteritis and bacter-aemia, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Although cellulitis is sometimes reported to accompany infection by this pathogen, the cutaneous manifestations are poorly understood. To clarify the characteristic cutaneous features, 47 cases of H. cinaedi bacteraemia experienced at Sapporo City General Hospital as nosocomial infection were retrospectively evaluated. Thirty-four percent (16 cases) of the patients showed cutaneous lesions. They all had sudden onset of erythemas accompanied by high temperature. The most common cutaneous

[Pathogenetic importance of helicobacter pylori infection].

H. pylori are etiological factor of human acute and chronic gastritis. Depending on pathogenic factors of microorganism and polymorphism of human genes, chronic gastritis can be a cause for ulcerative enteritis of the duodenum or stomach, gastric adenocarcinoma and MALT-lymphoma development. We revealed genetic features of bacteria, determined the intensity of inflammation, such as pathogenic factors--cag, plastic region of the genome and adhesin coding genes. Epigenetic changes, for example the methylation of E-cadherin gene associated with H pylori, are crucial for carcinogenesis. Thereby, p

Helicobacter pylori therapy: Present and future.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-lymphoma, and is also involved in carcinogenesis of the stomach. H. pylori treatment still remains a challenge for physicians, since no current first-line therapy is able to cure the infection in all treated patients. Several factors may help in the eradication of therapy failure. We reviewed both bacterial and host factors involved in therapeutic management of the H. pylori infection. In addition, we evaluated data on the most success

Management of Helicobacter pylori-related disorders.

The discovery of Helicobacter pylori has opened new opportunities in the management of gastrointestinal disorders, with the cure of chronic ulcer disease now being possible for the first time. The 1994 United States National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference recommended that patients with duodenal or gastric ulcers unrelated to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) should be given eradication therapy. These guidelines were refined at a conference held recently in Maastricht. The updated guidelines strongly recommend treatment in patients with duodenal or gastric ulce

Helicobacter pylori CagA and gastric carcinogenesis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to demonstrate the tyrosine phosphorylation motif (TPM) and 3' region structure of the Helicobacter pylori CagA gene as well as its SHP-2 binding activity in AGS cells and relation to gastric carcinogenesis. METHODS: Sixteen clinical isolate H. pylori strains from eight duodenal ulcer and eight gastric adenocarcinoma patients were studied for CagA repeat sequence EPIYA motifs, C-terminal structure, and western blot analysis of CagA protein expression, translocation, and SHP-2 binding in AGS cells. RESULTS: Except for strain 547, all strains from the gastric adeno

Helicobacter spp. other than H. pylori.

Significant advances have been made over the last 12 months in the understanding of the biology of non-H. pylori Helicobacter species (NHPH). Several studies have investigated the association between NHPH and human disease, including Crohn's disease, lithiasis, liver disease, coronary disease, gastritis, and pyoderma gangrenosum-like ulcers. Novel Helicobacter taxa were identified in new vertebrate hosts, and new methodologies in the fields of identification of Helicobacter spp. and evaluation of antibiotic resistance were described. The genome of the first human-derived gastric NHPH strain (H

Extragastric manifestations of Helicobacter pylori infection.

In the last year, different diseases possibly linked to Helicobacter pylori infection but localized outside of the stomach have been investigated. There are, in fact, several studies concerning cardiovascular diseases, hematologic disorders, neurologic diseases, metabolic, hepatobiliary diseases, and other conditions. Some of those studies, such as those on sideropenic anemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, are quite large and well conducted, while in other cases there are just small or isolated studies or even case reports. Nonetheless, there is much interest among researchers all ov

Helicobacter pylori associated with chronic urticaria.

Chronic urticaria is one of the most frequent skin diseases in medical practice. Urticaria is defined as acute if the whealing persists for less than six weeks and as chronic if it persists for longer. Chronic urticaria that lasts for several years to decades significantly impairs the quality of life. There is evidence that Helicobacter pylori has a critical role in different extragastric diseases such as chronic urticaria. We present a case of chronic urticaria in an adult patient with H. pylori infection and disease regression after triple anti-H. pylori therapy. In contrast to the autoimmun

Helicobacter pylori eradication for Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Levodopa is the mainstay of treatment for alleviating the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease. However, patients often experience fluctuations in their symptoms over time and 'wearing off' which may be partly related to variable absorption of the drug. There is some evidence that treatment of the common gastrointestinal infection Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) with antibiotics may improve levodopa absorption in the gut and hence improve symptoms. OBJECTIVES: 1) What is the prevalence of H pylori in Parkinson's disease patients? 2) Does treatment of H pylori infectio

Nutritional aspects of Helicobacter pylori infection.

H. pylori is a gram-negative pathogen, etiologically associated with atrophic and non-atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcer, primary gastric B-cell lymphoma and gastric carcinoma. Several observations demonstrated a correlation between H. pylori and malabsorption of essential nutrients; epidemiological studies have shown an association between H. pylori infection and iron deficiency anemia, while the absorption of some vitamins such as vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid and Vitamin E may be affected by the infection. The main mechanism related to malabsorption of this components is the m

Genome of Helicobacter pylori strain 908.

Helicobacter pylori is a genetically diverse and coevolved pathogen inhabiting human gastric niches and leading to a spectrum of gastric diseases in susceptible populations. We describe the genome sequence of H. pylori 908, which was originally isolated from an African patient living in France who suffered with recrudescent duodenal ulcer disease. The strain was found to be phylogenetically related to H. pylori J99, and its comparative analysis revealed several specific genome features and novel insertion-deletion and substitution events. The genome sequence revealed several strain-specific de

Helicobacter pylori and non-malignant diseases.

It is well known that Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with many nonmalignant disorders such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric polyp, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)/aspirin-induced gastric injury, and functional dyspepsia. In 2008, interesting articles on the association of H. pylori infection with these disorders were presented, some of which intended to reveal the mechanisms of inter-individual differences in response to H. pylori infection, and have demonstrated that genetic differences in host and bacterial factors as well a

Helicobacter pylori and gastroduodenal ulcer disease.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori-associated diseases and gastroduodenal ulcer disease are common conditions of major clinical and economic importance. There is thus a need for a guideline that incorporates the scientific knowledge gained in recent years and that takes specific aspects of the situation in Germany into account with regard to epidemiology, resistance status, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment. METHODS: This level-S3 consensus guideline was developed in accordance with the recommendations of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Wiss

Helicobacter pylori infection and dermatologic diseases.

Recent evidence suggests that Helicobacter pylori infections play a role in the pathogenesis of a variety of skin diseases. The best evidence for such a link is found for two diseases: chronic urticaria and immune thrombocytopenic purpura. Other diseases that have a purported, but not yet proven link to H. pylori are: cutaneous pruritus, Behçet's disease, nodular prurigo and lichen planus. Based on the current evidence for a relationship between H. pylori and chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura the European Helicobacter Study Group consensus 2007 recommended the eradication of Helicoba

[Helicobacter pylori infection and allergic diseases].

The prevalence of airway allergic diseases has increased in developed countries including Japan. There is a much published potential link between allergy and childhood infection. In 1989, Strachan proposed "hygiene hypothesis" that infections and living in an unhygienic environment might prime the immune system and thus protect against the development of allergic diseases. H. pylori would suppress allergic immune-mediated inflammation through T helper type 1 (Th1)/Th2 paradigm, which is suppression of Th2 responses by stimulation of Th1 immunity. In contrast, H. pylori infection has been assoc

Helicobacter pylori infection: a clinical overview.

BACKGROUND: Helicobcater pylori colonizes the stomach of more than half of the world's population, and the infection continues to play a key role in the pathogenesis of a number of gastroduodenal diseases. Colonization of the gastric mucosa with Helicobcater pylori results in the development of chronic gastritis in all infected individuals and in a subset of patients chronic gastritis progresses to complications (i.e. ulcer disease, gastric neoplasias, some distinct extragastric disorders). The clinical outcome of the disease is dependent on many variables, including Helicobcater pylori genoty

New strategies for Helicobacter pylori eradication.

Helicobacter pylori infection is highly prevalent worldwide and is a major cause of diseases occurring in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Successful eradication therapy improves H. pylori-related symptoms in functional dyspepsia, cures peptic ulcer disease and may prevent gastric cancer. During the past decade, the success rate of recommended eradication regimens declined from over 90% to about 80%, a critical threshold for effectiveness of the therapy according to the current guidelines. This is mainly because of the rising antimicrobial resistance and underlines that it is imperative to de

Clinical aspects of Helicobacter pylori infection.

The Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection is common. However, only 10-20% of infected individuals require antibacterial treatment. The main indications to such treatment are peptic ulcer disease, atrophic gastritis, dyspeptic symptoms, previous surgical procedure for gastric cancer, family history of gastric cancer and low-grade gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. The treatment may also be undertaken at the patient's request. To detect the infection the urease test (when the patient has indications for gastroscopy), the urea breath test or serologic test are most commonly u

Helicobacter pylori link to pernicious anaemia.

An immunological classification of chronic gastritis based on the detection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) antibody, parietal cell antibody, intrinsic factor antibody, is reported. H. pylori chronic gastritis, slowly progresses to atrophic gastritis, in the majority of patients; in a few patients, with genetic susceptibility to form intrinsic factor antibody, it progresses to pernicious anaemia. In majority of patients of pernicious anaemia, H. pylori gradually disappears from the gastric mucosa, on development of intestinal metaplasia in them. Atrophic gastritis results from H. pylori or
