Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with selective immunoglobulin a deficiency.

Selective immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency (IgAD) is the most common primary immunodeficiency in the western world. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of Helicobacter pylori-infected dyspeptic patients with IgAD. Case samples were drawn from all subjects ≥ 12 years of age (n = 104729) who had undergone serum total IgA measurements during 2004-14 for any reason at Leumit Healthcare Services (Israel) and had serum total IgA < 0·07 g/l. The control group was comprised of a random sample of remaining patients with a case-control ratio of 10 control

Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in pediatric celiac disease.

OBJECTIVE: A lower risk of celiac disease (CD) in patients with Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection has been reported when Hp infection prevalence in CD patients was compared against CD-negative symptomatic persons with indications for diagnostic gastroduodenoscopy. Therefore, we aimed to determine Hp infection frequency in a group of pediatric CD patients at diagnosis and to compare obtained results to data coming from age-matched healthy population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 74 CD subjects aged 3 to 12 years in whom the presence of Hp was diagnosed routinely in

High prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Behcet's disease.

BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystem disease of unknown etiology. There are several clues which may indicate an ethiopathogenesis role for Helicobacter pylori infection in this disease. METHODS: In a case control study in an out patient department, 48 patients with BD were compared to age, sex matched controls regarding presence of H. pylori infection by serology and urea breath test (UBT). RESULTS: Ongoing H. pylori infection was more prevalent among patients with BD using result of UBT with odds ratio of 3.1 (95% CI: 1.34 - 7.26, PV < 0.001). CONCLUSION: H. pylori infection

Can Helicobacter pylori infection influence human reproduction?

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection could be associated with extra-digestive diseases. Here, we report the evidences concerning the decrease in reproductive potential occurring in individuals infected by H. pylori, especially by strains expressing CagA. This infection is more prevalent in individuals with fertility disorders. Infected women have anti-H. pylori antibodies in cervical mucus and follicular fluid that may decrease sperm motility and cross react immunologically with spermatozoa, conceivably hampering the oocyte/sperm fusion. Infection by CagA positive organisms enhances the r

Helicobacter pylori and oral pathology: relationship with the gastric infection.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been found in the oral cavity and stomach, and its infection is one of the most frequent worldwide. We reviewed the literature and conducted a Topic Highlight, which identified studies reporting an association between H. pylori-infection in the oral cavity and H. pylori-positive stomach bacterium. This work was designed to determine whether H. pylori is the etiologic agent in periodontal disease, recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), squamous cell carcinoma, burning and halitosis. Record selection focused on the highest quality studies and meta-analyses. We s

Brain-gut axis in the pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is the main pathogenic factor for upper digestive tract organic diseases. In addition to direct cytotoxic and proinflammatory effects, H. pylori infection may also induce abnormalities indirectly by affecting the brain-gut axis, similar to other microorganisms present in the alimentary tract. The brain-gut axis integrates the central, peripheral, enteric and autonomic nervous systems, as well as the endocrine and immunological systems, with gastrointestinal functions and environmental stimuli, including gastric and intestinal microbiota. The bidirectio

Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with an increased rate of diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic infections could be contributing to the socioeconomic gradient in chronic diseases. Although chronic infections have been associated with increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and cardiovascular disease, there is limited evidence on how infections affect risk of diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We examined the association between serological evidence of chronic viral and bacterial infections and incident diabetes in a prospective cohort of Latino elderly. We analyzed data on 782 individuals aged >60 years and diabetes-free in 1998-1999, whose blood was tested for

Helicobacter pylori infection in pediatric candidates for kidney transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney failure was suggested to have a protective effect against Helicobacter pylori infection in adults. However, data about this effect in children is lacking. This study was designed to ascertain the prevalence, endoscopic findings, and histopathological features accompanying the Helicobacter pylori infection in children with end-stage renal disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from 117 children with end-stage renal disease aged 5 to 18 years that underwent routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy before kidney transplantation between 1998 and 2009. Epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer in Asia.

In Asia, the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection varies markedly in different countries. Higher prevalence rates are found in developing Asian countries while lower rates have been reported in more industrialized and developed countries. Within a country, the seroprevalence rates may vary between distinct geographic regions. H. pylori infection is an important etiological factor for the occurrence of non-cardia gastric adenocarcinoma. The incidence rate of gastric adenocarcinoma in Asia tends to mirror the seroprevalence rate of H. pylori infection; however, there are popul

MicroRNA signatures in Helicobacter pylori-infected gastric mucosa.

The study was conducted to determine expression patterns of microRNA (miRNA), a non-coding RNA that controls gene expression mainly through translational repression, in gastric mucosa infected with Helicobacter pylori. Using endoscopic biopsy specimens, miRNA expression patterns in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa were determined by microarray. The differentially expressed miRNAs were quantitated by real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). An in vitro infection model was assessed to monitor the regulation of miRNAs in gastric epithelium in response to H. pylori. The

Ocular adnexal lymphoma and Helicobacter pylori gastric infection.

There is a causal association between Helicobacter pylori (Hp) gastric infection and the development of gastric MALT lymphoma. In contrast, the link between Hp gastric infection and the development of extragastric lymphoma has not been thoroughly investigated. We, therefore, studied the prevalence of gastric Hp infection at initial diagnosis of ophthalmologic and nonophthalmologic extragastric lymphoma patients. Three cohorts of patients were studied: a first one of 83 patients with OAL, a second one of 101 patients with extraophthalmologic extragastric lymphoma, and a third one of 156 control

Relationship between Lichen Planus and Helicobacter pylori Infection.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lichen planus (LP) is a relatively common, chronic dermato-mucosal disease that often affects the oral mucosa. Among bacterial infections affecting LP, Helicobacter pylori has recently been proposed as an important etiologic factor. The present study was designed to evaluate the association of LP and H. pylori infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 30 patients with skin LP, 30 patients with oral LP and 30 healthy individuals without LP as control group. Patients and control group were selected from those referred to a dental and a dermatology clinic. Urea b

[Role of Helicobacter pylori infection in iron deficiency anemia].

Anemia induced by digestive diseases refers to anemia due to iron deficiency. Conventional gastrointestinal diagnostic workup fails to establish the cause of iron deficiency in about one third of patients. Abnormal iron absorption is increasingly recognized as an important cause of unexplained iron deficiency. The importance of coeliac disease as a possible cause of iron deficiency anemia refractory to oral iron treatment, without other manifestations of malabsorption syndrome, is increasingly being recognized. In addition, Helicobacter pylori (HP) has been implicated in several recent studies
