Thirty three consecutive children with chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis (NANBH) were studied during a four year period to evaluate clinical and histological features and the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV). All patients were asymptomatic. Thirteen (39%) of them were anti-HCV positive. A history of parenteral exposure was significantly more frequent among anti-HCV positive (69%) than anti-HCV negative patients (15%). Aminotransferase serum values were not statistically different between anti-HCV positive and anti-HCV negative patients. Unlike adults, cirrhosis was never found in the children stud…

Evidence for a new hepatitis-specific antigen has been obtained from double immunodiffusion assays between acute and convalescent sera obtained from patients with non-A, non-B post-transfusion hepatitis. The designation hepatitis C (HC) antigen is proposed. HC was found in the acute-phase sera of all 13 non-A, non-B post-transfusion hepatitis patients with longer incubation and duration periods (type 2) tested, but only transiently in 4 out of 10 acutephase sera obtained from patients with type 1 non-A, non-B hepatitis, with shorter incubation and duration periods. The antigen was also detecte…

Cystatin C is a non-glycated cationic protein with a molecular weight of 13.3 kD, which belongs to the superfamily of cystatins; its basic function is to inhibit and regulate the activity of cysteine proteinase. In apparently healthy individuals, the extracellular concentration of cystatin C is shown to be substantially higher in serum than in urine and bile. The increased serum concentration of cystatin C has been found in the development of chronic viral hepatitis C, and hepatic cirrhosis in particular, which reflects the development of an inflammatory process and, evidently, the higher secr…

Despite the advances in therapy, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) still represent a significant global health burden, both as major causes of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death worldwide. HBV is capable of incorporating its covalently closed circular DNA into the host cell's hepatocyte genome, making it rather difficult to eradicate its chronic stage. Successful viral clearance depends on the complex interactions between the virus and host's innate and adaptive immune response. One encouraging fact on hepatitis B is the development and effective distribution of t…

Egypt has one of the highest prevalence rates of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the world, mostly with genotype 4 that is highly associated with severe fibrosis. As a consequence, hepatocellular carcinoma has become the leading cause of cancer in this country. Mauritania is a highly endemic area for hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV and HCV could both be iatrogenically transmitted through infected blood products, infected needles, and medical equipment improperly sterilized. Adequate and efficient healthcare and public health measures with good surveillance programs, access for screening, prevention st…

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are amongst the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in pregnant women throughout the globe. This study is aimed at determining the frequency of these infections among primigravid females and the common factors that make them prone to these infections.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad from December 2015 to May 2016. A total of 174 jaundiced primigravida patients were included in the study through non-probability consecutive sampling. Blood samples were sent for HBsAg and anti-HCV ELISA. Samples…

Approximately 3 million healthcare workers per year receive an injury with an occupational instrument, with around 2000000 exposures to hepatitis B virus (HBV) and 1000000 to hepatitis C virus (HCV). Although an effective HBV vaccine has been available since the early eighties, and despite the worldwide application of universal vaccination programs started in the early nineties, HBV still remains a prominent agent of morbidity and mortality. There is no vaccine to limit the diffusion of HCV infection, which progresses to chronicity in the majority of cases and is a major cause of morbidity and…

Although a considerable number of studies have been undertaken to date, it is still controversial as to whether or not coinfection with schistosomiasis increases the susceptibility to or progression from Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This review is a closer examination of the key studies conducted on human populations on clinical factors that were published in English between 1975 and January 2015. Our review is mainly based on tables containing the salient information, which are arranged first by study population, country of study and publication date. We provi…

To examine the associations between maternal hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) infection status and selected infant neurological outcomes diagnosed at birth, we conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study on singleton live births in Florida from 1998 to 2009. Primary exposures included maternal HBV and HCV monoinfection. The neurological outcomes included brachial plexus injury, cephalhematoma, foetal distress, feeding difficulties, intraventricular h aemorrhage and neonatal seizures. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to generate odds ratios (OR) and 95% con…

Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), or hepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause rapidly progressive renal disease, so prompt recognition and management are critical. Viral glomerulonephropathy can now often be successfully managed with a specific combination of antiviral therapy, immunosuppressants, plasmapheresis, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and angiotensin 2 receptor blockers.

Severe hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis leading to early liver failure has been reported only exceptionally. Of 259 HCV-infected renal transplant (RT) patients in one hospital unit, four (1.5%) are described, representing the first series of this particular post-RT disease. Patient mean age was 55.7 yr. Three were men. All had pretransplant, hepatitis B surface antigen-negative and were anti-HCV antibodies positive. Three of them showed pretransplant mild liver enzyme abnormalities, and all received kidneys from HCV-negative donors. All were on steroids, cyclospo…

In some patients differentiation between autoimmune hepatitis and chronic viral disease may be difficult. In patients with chronic active hepatitis the coincidence of various types of autoantibodies and antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV-Ab) has been reported. It is important to diagnose the true etiology of the underlying liver disease because treatment for viral disease and autoimmune hepatitis is different. This paper reports about five patients who were referred to the liver outpatient clinic with the diagnosis of chronic active hepatitis. All of them had antibodies to liver-pancreas-ant…

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of clinical and biologic extrahepatic manifestations of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and to identify associations between clinical and biologic manifestations.
METHODS: To analyze the natural history of extrahepatic manifestations of HCV infection, we reviewed only the data recorded prospectively during the first visit of 1,614 patients with chronic HCV infection, coming from a single monocenter cohort. Exclusion criteria were positivity for hepatitis B surface antigen or human immunodeficiency virus. The prevalence of dermatologic, rheumatologic, neur…
