The cellular pathways required for herpes simplex virus (HSV) invasion have not been defined. To test the hypothesis that HSV entry triggers activation of Ca2+-signaling pathways, the effects on intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) after exposure of cells to HSV were examined. Non-immune hydrops fetalis is a rare pregnancy complication, which can be caused by a myriad of conditions. Etiologies include metabolic or chromosomal disorders, fetal structural anomalies, and fetal infections. We present a case of non-immune hydrops caused by an intra-uterine infection with Type 1 Herpes Simplex Virus. Evaluation of the fetus with non-immune hydrops should include an amniocentesis for viral culture of the amniotic fluid.

During a 16-month period patients who presented to the Syracuse University Health Center with upper respiratory complaints had throat swabs obtained for viral, streptococcal and Mycoplasma pneumoniae cultures. Thirty-five of 613 patients (5.7%) had herpes simplex virus (HSV) isolated. All but 2 of the HSV isolates were found to be type 1 by immunofluorescent staining. We describe three patients with benign recurrent aseptic meningitis (Mollaret's meningitis). For one of these cases, the episodes of meningitis were associated with herpetic outbreaks. Mollaret cells, which are a hallmark of Mollaret's meningitis, were present in the CSF from two of the three patients. We studied the sequential EEGs of 15 neonatal herpes simplex virus meningoencephalitis (NHSV-ME) patients and correlated them with corresponding clinical and laboratory findings. During days 1 to 4 of the illness, 8 had EEGs. All but 1 had abnormal tracings and 3 (38%) showed the multifocal periodic pattern (MPP). Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV 1) infection in the central nervous system results in encephalitis with high mortality and morbidity. However herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2) infection in this area usually results in benign meningitis. Brain biopsy is the most sensitive and most specific method for diagnosing HSV 1 encephalitis.
