A nationwide survey in Japan revealed that about 6 % of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients are coinfected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). To further analyze the features of liver disease in HIV/HBV-coinfected patients, we analyzed 252 patients from six hospitals in the HIV/AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) Network of Japan. A 30-year-old male was admitted with bilateral painful breast enlargement of 6 months duration. There was a past history of surgery for similar bilateral swellings, which was then diagnosed as fibrocystic disease. On examination both breasts were firm to hard, tender & adherent to deeper structures. A single axillary lymph node was palpable on each side. The clinical diagnosis was sarcoma of the breast. After initial denial, the patient confessed to having injected gear oil into both the breasts,for the purpose of augmentation. He was a homosexual.

PURPOSE: We describe the case of a of 53-year-old homosexual male, from whom a cigar container (22 cm in length and 3.5 cm in diameter), which was introduced into the rectum and migrated upwards to the distal colon, was successfully extracted by combining laparoscopic and anal approaches.
METHODS: The foreign body was mobilized laparoscopically, pushed down the rectum, and then extracted transanally with the aid of a dilator anoscope.
CONCLUSIONS: Combining the laparoscopic and anal approaches in selected cases of colorectal foreign bodies is useful.

A study conducted in a mental hospital involved 157 male adolescents (aged 14-17 years) with psychopathy (n = 42), oligophrenia (n = 49), and schizophrenia (n = 66) who displayed some sexual deviations. Homosexual manifestations were found to be the most frequent form of sexual deviations (61%). Other forms included sadomasochistic actions, heterosexual aggression, sexual claims to relatives, exhibitionism, etc. The mechanisms of the development of deviant sexual behaviour differed in the framework of the nosology and type of deviations.

PURPOSE: To investigate the risk factors for cotton-wool spots and for cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV).
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 453 consecutive male patients with a positive serodiagnosis for HIV. The possible risk factors of age, race, absolute T-lymphocyte CD4+ count, and mode of HIV acquisition were evaluated.

The aim of this study was to determine which human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtypes were circulating in Australia and to correlate the subtypes with risk factors associated with the acquisition of HIV-1 infection. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and HIV-1 env genes were amplified and subtyped using heteroduplex mobility analysis, with selected samples sequenced and phylogenetic analysis performed. The HIV-1 env subtypes were determined for 141 samples, of which 40 were from female patients and 101 were from male patients; 13 samples were from children.

A 22-year-old homosexual male, newly diagnosed with human immunodeficiecy virus (HIV), presented with a rash and thin, scaly peeling on both knees and elbows. Multiple orange-brown, scaly plaques were observed on the flexor surface of the elbows. Histopathologic examination was consistent with a clinical diagnosis of pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP). The CD4+ T lymphocyte count was 522/µL, and the viral load was 19,100 copies/µL. Treatment with acitretin and antiretroviral therapy was initiated, and the patient responded well within three months.
