Pulmonary vascular disease in Africa: Lessons from registries.

The epidemiology of pulmonary vascular disease (PVD) remains unclear in Africa, where health systems do not reach the majority of the population and heath information systems are poorly developed. In this context, registries are particularly important in gathering crucial information on PVD, aiming at improving knowledge of the epidemiology and/or quality of care. While population-based registries are the main tool to identify incident cases, and be a better indicator of pulmonary vascular disease burden, hospital-based registries can give an indication of the demand for specific care services

[Inappropriate use of serological tests for hepatitis B virus in Evliya Celebi Education and Research Hospital of Dumlupinar University, Kütahya].

Since hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections may cause serious clinical symptoms and become chronic, the appropriate use and interpretation of laboratory tests in diagnosis is crucial. Implementation of serological tests for all HBV markers leads to high cost, labour force and time loss, so diagnostic algorithms are used for this purpose. The aims of this retrospective study were to detect the number of unnecessary test requests in HBV infection serology and financial burden as its consequence and to find out the reasons and ways of solutions. Three-years records of microbiology laboratory of Duml

Checking coding completeness by mining discharge summaries.

Incomplete coding is a known problem in hospital information systems. In order to detect non-coded secondary diseases we developed a text classification system which scans discharge summaries for drug names. Using a drug knowledge base in which drug names are linked to sets of ICD-10 codes, the system selects those documents in which a drug name occurs that is not justified by any ICD-10 code within the corresponding record in the patient database. Treatment episodes with missing codes for diabetes mellitus, Parkinson's disease, and asthma/COPD were subject to investigation in a large German u…

Accessibility of selected hospitals and medical procedures by means of aerial and transit network-based measures.

OBJECTIVE: This report investigates the use of linear and travelled route (transit network-based) distances in estimating the accessibility of hospitals to patients, for some selected hospital admission diagnostics. METHODS: For patients admitted to 14 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro City, during 1996, under the ICD-9 headings "Complications of Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Puerperium" and "Disorders of the Circulatory System", average distances between the patient's district of residence and hospital of admission were calculated (both as Euclidean and as network-based distances). Data wer

Factors affecting paramedics situational awareness in out of hospital emergencies: A mixed methods systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Out-of-hospital emergency care is complex, time-critical, and demands rapid decisions that directly affect patient safety. Paramedics deliver life-saving treatment in unpredictable environments, requiring swift judgment and adaptability under pressure. Despite expertise, errors occur-especially under stress. Situational awareness (SA), the ability to perceive, interpret, and anticipate key elements, is vital for safe, effective care and coordination. Yet research on how paramedics develop and maintain SA in these challenging settings remains limited, leaving critical knowledge ga

Crisis management in Finnish hospital pharmacies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Although hospital pharmacies have played a central role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lack of crisis management theory-based empirical research on the topic. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap in the Finnish context and identify areas for development to improve future crisis preparedness. METHODS: A national cross-sectional survey was developed based on crisis management process models and sent to all hospital pharmacy heads (n = 21) during the second wave of the pandemic in October-November 2020. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and qualitative

Effects of hospital pharmacist-community pharmacist collaboration on solving pharmacotherapy problems in stroke patients with post-discharge transitions: non-randomized comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Seamlessly providing appropriate drug therapy to patients recovering from stroke is essential for preventing recurrence, regardless of changes in their medical care environment. To address this, several initiatives have been undertaken to improve communication between hospital and community pharmacists, including the use of discharge medication summaries. However, we previously revealed discrepancies between the contents of prescriptions upon discharge and outpatient prescriptions from other institutions. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to examine the effect of bidirectio
