Predictors of hospital mortality among patients with COVID-19 in Tehran, Iran.

OBJECTIVE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic. Timely and effective predictors of survival and death rates are crucial for improving the management of COVID-19 patients. In this study, we evaluated the predictors of mortality based on the demographics, comorbidities, clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and vital signs of 500 patients with COVID-19 admitted at Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex, the biggest hospital in Tehran, Iran. METHODS: Five hundred hospitalized laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were included in this study. Subsequently, elect

Neonatal mortality rates and association with antenatal corticosteroids at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Malawi has one of the highest child mortality rates in the world, and neonates account for nearly half of all under-five mortality. No previous study has reported neonatal outcomes in Malawi over 12 months. We aimed to evaluate outcomes in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) and to determine if there was an association between increased survival and antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) exposure. STUDY DESIGN: We introduced a prospective, observational electronic database to collect 122 de-identified variables related to neonatal outcomes for all neona

In-Hospital Postoperative Mortality Rates for Selected Procedures in Tanzania's Lake Zone.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative mortality rate is one of six surgical indicators identified by the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery for monitoring access to high-quality surgical care. The primary aim of this study was to measure the postoperative mortality rate in Tanzania's Lake Zone to provide a baseline for surgical strengthening efforts. The secondary aim was to measure the effect of Safe Surgery 2020, a multi-component intervention to improve surgical quality, on postoperative mortality after 10 months. METHODS: We prospectively collected data on postoperative mortality from 20 health cent

A prospective review of perinatal mortality at Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV).

BACKGROUND: Timor-Leste has one of the highest perinatal mortality rates in the Asia-Pacific region. Consistent and accurate data collection improves understanding of perinatal outcomes and facilitates the development of interventions to reduce stillbirths and early neonatal deaths. AIMS: (1) To identify changes in the rates of stillbirth and early neonatal deaths from previous published data. (2) To determine if prospective data collection and the application of the simplified Causes Of Death and Associated Conditions (CODAC) classification allows better identification of perinatal deaths in

Length of hospital stay after hip fracture surgery and 1-year mortality.

UNLABELLED: There is ongoing effort to discharge patients early after hip fracture surgery to reduce the medical and economic burden. We tried to find whether there is any related side effect, and discovered that early discharge, especially before 10 days after surgery, is associated with higher mortality. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze the association between the length of hospital stay after hip fracture and 1-year mortality in older adults aged ≥ 65 years old. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service data to

Factors influencing cost, length of hospital stay and mortality in colorectal cancer.

PURPOSE: Colorectal cancers (CRCs) are the most common cancers in the world after lung and prostate cancer in men and breast and lung cancer in women, and usually occur in the recto-sigmoid region. There are many factors that affect their morbidity and mortality. Some markers have been evaluated to predict disease prognosis. However, a gold standard prognostic biomarker has not yet been found for CRC. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the factors associated with the duration and cost of hospital stay and mortality. METHODS: Patients who were admitted to the emergency service and gene

Intra-abdominal aortic graft infection: prognostic factors associated with in-hospital mortality.

BACKGROUND: Mortality associated with aortic graft infection is considerable. The gold standard for surgical treatment remains explantation of the graft. However, prognostic factors associated with early mortality due to this surgical procedure are not well-known. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients admitted in our center between January 2006 and October 2011 for aortic graft infection. The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality. A bivariate analysis of characteristics of patients associated with in-hospital outcome was performed. RESULTS: Twenty five evaluable patients were stud…

[Changes in mortality in the Reims University Hospital Dermatology Department (1996-2009)].

BACKGROUND: End-of-life care is becoming a daily concern of French dermatology departments. The aim of this single-centre retrospective study was to assess changes in mortality and end-of-life care in a university dermatology department over a 14-year period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of all patients dying in our dermatology department from 1996 to 2009 were studied retrospectively. A descriptive analysis was performed together with a comparison between the two periods demarcated by the institution of the French National Cancer Plan at the end of 2002. RESULTS: The number of

Reductions in 28-day mortality following hospital admission for upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: It is unclear whether mortality from upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage is changing: any differences observed might result from changes in age or comorbidity of patient populations. We estimated trends in 28-day mortality in England following hospital admission for gastrointestinal hemorrhage. METHODS: We used a case-control study design to analyze data from all adults administered to a National Health Service hospital, for upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, from 1999 to 2007 (n=516,153). Cases were deaths within 28 days of admission (n=74,992), and controls were survivors t

Hyperglycemia is associated with increased hospital complications and mortality during parenteral nutrition.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperglycemia is a recognized complication of parenteral nutrition (PN). We aimed to determine the impact of hyperglycemia during PN unaccompanied by tight blood glucose (BG) control on hospital complications and mortality. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 276 medical and surgical patients receiving PN to determine the impact of hyperglycemia on survival after adjusting for known prognostic factors, and to determine whether BG levels before initiation of PN, within 24 hours of PN initiation, or during PN therapy are predictive of adverse outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 27

Bioelectric impedance phase angle is associated with hospital mortality of geriatric patients.

Malnutrition is regularly associated with weight loss and changes in body composition, which lead to an increase in disability, complications and mortality. Bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) is a simple and non-invasive bedside body composition analysis technique. In particular, bioelectric impedance phase angle (PA) has been shown to predict prognosis and mortality in several clinical conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of BIA measurements and hospital mortality in multimorbid geriatric patients. The data obtained from the routine clinical admissions of …

Gender differences and in-hospital mortality in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions.

Clinical assessment of spinal impairment in Axial Spondyloarthritis is currently performed using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrological Index (BASMI). Despite being appreciated for its simplicity, the BASMI index lacks sensitivity and specificity of spinal changes, demonstrating poor association with radiographical range of motion (ROM). Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have shown promising results as a cost-effective method to quantitatively examine movement of the human body, however errors due to sensor angular drift have limited their application to a clinical space. Therefore, this

Two year audit of perinatal mortality at Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal mortality rate is a sensitive indicator of quality of care provided to women in pregnancy, at and after child birth and to the newborns in the first week of life. Regular perinatal audit would help in identifying all the factors that play a role in causing perinatal deaths and thus help in appropriate interventions to reduce avoidable perinatal deaths. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to determine perinatal mortality rate (PMR) and the factors responsible for perinatal deaths at KMCTH in the two year period from November 2003 to October 2005 (Kartik 2060

Hospital mortality of re-replacement of the aortic valve. Incremental risk factors.

A total of 200 aortic vale re-replacements were performed between Jan. 1, 1975, and July 1, 1979. The re-replacements (RRP) were an isolated procedure or combined with coronary artery bypass grafting or resection of ascending aortic aneurysm. Ten patients (5%) died in hospital, compared with 24 (2.9%) among 842 patients undergoing isolated or combined initial aortic valve replacement (AVR) (p = 0.12). The mode of death was cardiac failure in six of the 10 patients, hemorrhage in two (from accidents at repeat sternotomy), and neurologic deficits in two (each with innominate vein transection at
