Geographic, demographic and economic burden of human cystic echinococcosis in Italy based on hospital discharge records (2015-2022).

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected zoonotic disease that remains a public-health concern worldwide. However, poor surveillance and incomplete reporting still hinder the calculation of the CE burden. This study evaluated national hospital discharge records (HDRs) from 2015 to 2022 to update CE epidemiological situation and economic impact of human CE in Italy. We reviewed 4,293 HDRs with an echinococcosis diagnosis during 2015-2022. Data extracted included age, sex, residence, nationality, primary versus secondary diagnosis, treatment type, length of stay and discharge outcome. The avera

Multicenter assessment of impairments and disabilities associated with Beirut blast injuries: a retrospective review of hospital medical records.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the injury patterns of the Beirut blast victims and assess hospitals' disaster management and preparedness during the 2020 Beirut port blast. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective multicenter study was conducted in two stages. Data were collected on blast victims presented to participating hospitals from August 4 till August 8, using three designed questionnaires. Stage 1 included all blast patients' records and stage 2 examined a subset of inpatient and outpatient records. Binary logistic regression was performed to assess the factors associated wit

A natural history of temporary tube feeding care at a children's hospital: A prospective audit of medical records.

This chart audit characterized the natural history of temporary tube feeding use at a children's hospital between 1 November 2018 and 30 November 2019. Data were collected from the decision-making phase until tube removal or 4 months post-tube insertion. Children's tube feeding journeys were described, and associations determined between patient and service-related variables and outcomes of tube feeding duration and being discharged with a feeding tube. Four hundred and 94 patients were followed with a median age of 1.0 years (IQR 3.6). Many had respiratory illnesses (n = 213, 43%) and receive

Protocol for a scoping review to understand how interorganisational electronic health records affect hospital physician and pharmacist decisions.

INTRODUCTION: Patient records are often fragmented across organisations and departments in UK health and care services, often due to substandard information technology. However, although government policy in the UK and internationally is strongly pushing 'digital transformation', the evidence for the positive impact of electronic information systems on cost, quality and safety of healthcare is far from clear. In particular, the mechanisms by which information availability is translated into better decision-making are not well understood. We do not know when a full interorganisational record is

The cost of caring for end-stage kidney disease patients: an analysis based on hospital financial transaction records.

The costs of care for end-stage renal disease patients continue to rise because of increased numbers of patients. Efforts to contain these costs have focused on the development of capitated payment schemes, in which all costs for the care of these patients are covered in a single payment. To determine the effect of a capitated reimbursement scheme on care of dialysis patients (both hemodialysis [HD] and peritoneal dialysis [PD]), complete financial records (all reimbursements for inpatient and outpatient care, as well as physician collections) of dialysis patients at a single medical center ov

Completeness of Paper-Based Clinical Records as a Dimension of Clinical Record Quality in Selected Public Hospitals in Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape Provinces, South Africa.

Background: Clinical documentation is fundamental to quality healthcare delivery, continuity of care, clinical governance, health information management, and medico-legal accountability. However, incomplete clinical documentation remains a persistent challenge in public healthcare settings, and evidence describing documentation completeness at the hospital level in South Africa remains limited. Aim: This study aimed to assess the completeness of paper-based clinical records in selected public hospitals in the Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. Methods: A quantitative cross-

Difference in presentation, outcomes, and hospital epidemiologic trend of COVID-19 among first, second, and third waves: a review of hospital records and prospective cohort study.

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to examine the differences in epidemiologic and disease aspects among patients with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). METHODS: The authors reviewed the hospital records between April 2020 and September 2021 and followed up on the patients for post-COVID complications. FINDINGS: Older adult patients were predominantly affected during the third wave, and middle-aged patients were predominantly affected during the first and second waves. Men were predominantly admitted, considering the three waves, although more women were admitted in the second wave. Cough was mor…

Supervised machine learning-based prediction for in-hospital pressure injury development using electronic health records: A retrospective observational cohort study in a university hospital in Japan.

BACKGROUND: In hospitals, nurses are responsible for pressure injury risk assessment using several kinds of risk assessment scales. However, their predictive validity is insufficient to initiate targeted preventive strategy for each patient. The use of electronic health records with machine learning technique is a promising strategy to provide automated clinical decision-making aid. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to construct a predictive model for pressure injury development which included feature variables that can be collected on the first day of hospitalization by nurses who rou

Altered mental status in cancer-related emergency hospitalizations: prevalence and recorded reasons for admission.

BACKGROUND: Altered mental status is a critical clinical presentation in emergency departments, yet its frequency in cancer-related emergency hospitalizations and the clinical conditions recorded at presentation have not been well characterized. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort study using data from the Cancer Registry-based Study on Cancer Care in Osaka (CanReCO), which links hospital-based cancer registry data with Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) administrative data. The cohort included patients diagnosed between January 2019 and December 2022, and linked DPC h

Hospital Readmissions Among Patients Experiencing Homelessness: An Electronic Health Record Data Study.

BACKGROUND: Population-level tracking of hospital use patterns with integrated care organizations in patients experiencing homelessness has been difficult. A California law implemented in 2019 (Senate Bill 1152) aimed to ensure safety for this population after discharge from the hospital by requiring additional documentation for patients experiencing homelessness, which provides an opportunity to evaluate hospital use by this population. METHODS: In a large integrated health system in California, patients experiencing homelessness were identified through documentation change requirements asso
