BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of cancer are at elevated risk for financial challenges, food insecurity, and basic needs instability. However, little is known about their lived experiences. Hence, this study explored the lived experiences of financial toxicity, basic needs instability, and food insecurity among AYA survivors and described the impact of financial toxicity on the overall well-being of AYA survivors. METHODS: Using a systematic content analysis approach, this study examined 3,868 Reddit items (original posts and associated comments) drawn from 26 Reddit co

Onset of these risks occur earlier in both groups that have had an experience of housing instability (e.g., runaway, foster care, etc.) but are delayed or not present among YMSM with no history of housing instability. This paper explores how vulnerability is not only defined by the state but also actively reshaped through policy implementation and lived experience. Drawing on ethnographic research in Eskişehir, Turkey, I propose an analytical distinction between the 'commodification of vulnerability'-framing risk in technoscientific and moral terms to justify intervention-and the 'reproduction of vulnerability'-capturing the emergent precarity produced by such action. Following the 2011 Van earthquakes, Turkey's central government advanced disaster prevention as a national imperative. In 2012, Law No. 6306

Health equity is foundational to the delivery of high-quality serious illness care. Despite advances in palliative care, substantial disparities persist in symptom burden, quality of life, caregiver distress, access to specialty services, and end-of-life outcomes across racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, geographic, and other structurally marginalized populations. These inequities are driven not by individual patient characteristics alone, but by structural, institutional, and social factors including discrimination, language discordance, disability, transportation barriers, housing instability, f…

Drinking water and sanitation services in high-income countries typically bring widespread health and other benefits to their populations. Yet gaps in this essential public health infrastructure persist, driven by structural inequalities, racism, poverty, housing instability, migration, climate change, insufficient continued investment, and poor planning. Although the burden of disease attributable to these gaps is mostly uncharacterised in high-income settings, case studies from marginalised communities and data from targeted studies of microbial and chemical contaminants underscore the need …

The present study examines the relationship between incarceration and post-prison residential mobility. In spite of recent research examining the residential context following incarceration, we know little about if or how incarceration affects individual patterns of residential mobility. This study starts to fill this gap in knowledge by drawing on nationally representative data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79). I find that individuals with a history of incarceration are more likely to move after prison than they are before prison. This relationship holds even after

The Prenatal Risk Overview (PRO) was designed to screen for 13 psychosocial risk factors associated with poor birth outcomes. This study describes the development and implementation of the PRO in 4 community health centers. The study also examines the prevalence, co-occurrence, and inter-correlations of psychosocial risks in their prenatal populations. The study sample included 1,386 prenatal patients screened between November 2005 and April 2007; 95% were women of color; 77% were not married. The PRO classified 48% at moderate or high risk for housing instability; 32% for food insecurity; 75%…

INTRODUCTION: Housing instability of transitional-aged youth, 18 to 24 years-old, has not been well described. These individuals may be susceptible to sexual exploitation, mental health disorders, illicit substance use, and gang activity. This study characterizes violent death among transitional-aged, unhoused individuals.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the National Violent Death Reporting System, a database of police and medical examiner state records, from 2003 to 2021. Demographic variables were included. We conducted two comparisons using Chi-square and Mann-Whit…

Background: The novel coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic is a collective crisis that imposed an abrupt and unprecedented impact on college students, as universities were closed with little warning. Paired with the challenges associated with physical distancing (e.g. economic stress, job loss, food insecurity, housing challenges) and the simultaneous need to balance continued and new academic demands, impact will be wide-ranging. It is critical to determine the structure of the impact of this heterogeneous stressor (e.g. health concerns, pandemic worry, financial concerns) for prevention and in

Eviction is a significant yet understudied social determinants of health (SDoH), linked to housing instability, unemployment, and mental health. While eviction appears in unstructured electronic health records (EHRs), it is rarely coded in structured fields, limiting downstream applications. We introduce SynthEHR-Eviction, a scalable pipeline that adapts and integrates human-in-the-loop annotation, automated prompt optimization (APO), and reasoning-augmented fine-tuning for low-resource eviction-related SDoH extraction from clinical notes.
