The patient inflicted himself incisions on both wrists, the occiput and the throat between the hyoid-bone and the thyroid cartilage. The quality of esophageal voice and speech after laryngectomy depends on several factors. Negative influences are produced by irradiation, resection of the hyoid bone and radical neck dissection. The factors important in esophageal speech were analyzed, with consideration given to the functional morphology of the pseudoglottis and the reconstructed hypopharynx. Phoniatric, laryngologic and radiologic aspects are considered.

An 11-year-old boy had a left neck mass with torticollis. On exploration, a fibrotic mass in the superior belly of the left omohyoid muscle was found, which shortened the muscle and pulled the hyoid bone downward. Resection of the fibrotic muscle was performed. The patient recovered well after the operation with resolution of his torticollis.

A case of hypoglossal nerve neuropraxia following elective drainage of bilateral chronic subdural haematomas is described. We postulate that the cause of neuropraxia was inadvertent extubation of the trachea with the cuff inflated, leading to compression and stretch of the nerve against the greater horn of the hyoid bone.
