SPECIFICITY OF PASSIVELY TRANSFERRED DELAYED HYPERSENSITIVITY.

Guinea pigs were injected intravenously with lymphoid cells sensitized to tubercle bacilli (TBC cells) and with lymphoid cells sensitized by … ellular infiltrate was derived from the responding host. The specificity of the reaction of delayed hypersensitivity was apparently achieved by retention of the sensitized cells after they had arrived by chance at the specific antigen depot and was not due to a non-specific stickiness of sensitized or inflamed lymphoid cells.

Electroacupuncture alleviates zymosan-induced colorectal hypersensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: this study to investigate the mechanism underlying the electroacupuncture (EA) alleviates colorectal hypersensitivity, a feature of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: The colorectal hypersensitivity model was established by treating mice with zymosan. Electrophysiological techniques, Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining were used to detect the changes of the sensitive state of the colorectum and the response in spinal ganglion and spinal cord after acupuncture intervention. RESULTS: colorectal distension studies revealed that repetitive applied electroacupuncture…

Esophageal Reflux Hypersensitivity: A Comprehensive Review.

Reflux hypersensitivity (RH) is one of the phenotypes of gastroesophageal reflux disease. The latest Rome IV defines RH as a condition with typical reflux symptoms and positive reflux-symptom association despite normal acid exposure. Subsequently, the Lyon consensus proposed detailed cutoff values for the criteria on the basis of experts' consensus. Rome IV brought a clear-cut perspective into the pathophysiology of gastroesophageal reflux disease and the importance of esophageal hypersensitivity. This perspective can be supported by the fact that other functional gastrointestinal disorders su…

Hypersensitivity Reactions to Homemade Topical Preparations.

Homemade topical preparations are becoming increasingly popular due to the widespread belief that herbal and natural products are a safer and better option in the treatment of various conditions. However, homemade topical preparations can precipitate allergic and irritant reactions, depending on the herbal composition of the preparation. Hypersensitivity reactions to such preparations range from contact allergic dermatitis, contact irritant dermatitis, contact urticaria, toxic reaction, photosensitivity, and phototoxic reaction. In Europe, and especially in the Mediterranean area, medicinal he…

Hypersensitivity to non-β-lactam antibiotics.

Most allergic reactions to antibiotics are caused by β-lactam antibiotics; however non-β-lactam antibiotics are also capable of causing both immediate allergic reactions as well as late-type reactions to these drugs. This is especially true for fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides. Of these, the combination of sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim (Cotrimoxazol, e.g., Bactrim) is most important. However, there are certain types of reactions to non-β-lactam antibiotics that are not associated with β-lactam antibiotics. These include photosensitivity to sulfonamides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolone

Opioid toxicity: histamine, hypersensitivity, and MRGPRX2.

Insights into the pathophysiology of many non-immune-mediated drug reactions referred to as toxicities, sensitivities, intolerances, or pseudoallergies have resulted from research identifying the mastocyte-related G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) member X2 (MRGPRX2), a human mast cell receptor mediating adverse reactions without the involvement of antibody priming. Opioid-induced degranulation of mast cells, particularly morphine, provoking release of histamine and other preformed mediators and causing hemodynamic and cutaneous changes seen as flushing, headache and wheal and flare reactions

Quaternary ammonium compounds in hypersensitivity reactions.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) are commonly used disinfectants, antiseptics, preservatives, and detergents due to their antibacterial property and represent the first used biocides before phenolic or nitrogen products. Their common structure consists of one or more quaternary ammonium bound with four lateral substituents. Their amphiphilic structure allows them to intercalate into microorganism surfaces which induces an unstable and porous membrane that explains their antimicrobial activity towards bacteria, fungi, and viruses. QAC are thus found in many areas, such as household products,

Non-β-Lactam Antibiotic Hypersensitivity Reactions.

OBJECTIVES: Antibiotics are among the most common prescriptions in children, and non-β-lactam antibiotics (NBLAs) account for almost half of those prescribed in Australian pediatric hospitals. Despite this, data on NBLA hypersensitivity in children are limited. This study describes reported hypersensitivity reactions to NBLAs in children and the results of allergy evaluation. METHODS: Children with a suspected NBLA allergy who had skin testing and/or an intravenous or oral challenge test (OCT) between May 2011 and June 2018 were included. Patients were excluded if they were >18 years old or d…

Vancomycin-associated drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Although hypersensitivity reactions are well characterized for certain medications, vancomycin-associated drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS), or drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), has yet to be defined. OBJECTIVE: To better define the clinical phenotype of vancomycin-associated DIHS. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted over an 8-year period at a single, academic institution. A total of 29 cases of DIHS/DRESS were identified, of which 4 were attributed to vancomycin. A literature review was performed; it identified 28 additiona…

Incidence of Hypersensitivity Reactions During Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A recent alert from Spanish health authorities warned of a higher incidence of reported hypersensitivity reactions to hemodialysis membranes with polysulfone, in the 2017 review of acute reactions to dialyzers found only published reports in the 21st century on polysulfone and its derivatives. The aim is to assess/evaluate the current incidence and characteristics of hypersensitivity reactions in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: A retrospective multicentre study in 9 Spanish hospitals evaluated patients in whom a hypersensitivity reaction required a change in dialyzer membrane…

How to prevent allopurinol hypersensitivity reactions?

Allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome (AHS) is a severe and sometimes life-threatening adverse drug reaction. Although AHS is rare, the number of patients with gout requiring allopurinol is high, and there are sufficient overall cases of AHS to warrant consideration of preventive measures. Most cases occur within 8-9 weeks of commencing allopurinol, and good patient education at initiation may lead to rapid drug cessation at onset of symptoms. Pretreatment testing for HLA-B*5801 and avoidance of allopurinol when positive reduces the risk of AHS and is cost-effective in some ethnic groups. A lo…

Immediate Hypersensitivity Reaction to Chemotherapeutic Agents.

An increase by 70% in new cases of cancer is expected over the next 2 decades, with more than 8 million people dying each year from the disease, an estimated 13% of all deaths worldwide. Several new chemotherapeutic agents have been rapidly developed and many of them approved through a fast-track process. In parallel, adverse reactions to chemotherapy have increased dramatically worldwide, frequently preventing the use of first-line therapy for cancer and jeopardizing patients' treatment outcomes. The present review focuses on immediate hypersensitivity reactions (IHRs) induced by chemotherape…

Non-surgical management of tooth hypersensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity is a common complaint of patients in dental practices. Studies have demonstrated dentinal hypersensitivity to affect 10-30% of the population. There are various potential causes of tooth sensitivity and a variety of available treatment options. This narrative review will discuss the possible aetiology of this condition, as well as the treatment modalities available. A tailor-made treatment plan that starts with the most non-invasive treatment options and escalates only when those options have proven insufficient in alleviating symptoms should be provided for each patient. Onl…
