Benzodiazepine receptor [( 3H]flunitrazepam) binding and purine concentration were measured in autopsied cerebral cortex of 4 patients who died with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Receptor density was normal in all 4 regions of Lesch-Nyhan cortex examined. In subconfluent cultures of fibroblasts from patients with complete or partial deficiencies of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase, phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase activity is elevated. Excess of uric acid is mainly treated with xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitors, also called uricostatics because they block the conversion of hypoxanthine and xanthine into urate. Normally, accumulation of upstream metabolites is prevented by the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) enzyme. Twelve of 21 isolates of Cladosporium carrionii, when grown on nutritionally deficient media such as lactrimel agar, hay infusion agar, diluted corn meal dextrose agar, and water agar, produced urniform phialides and phialoconidia identical with those produced by two isolates of Cladophialophora ajelloi. The protozoan parasite Babesia equi, a causative agent of equine piroplasmosis, was continuously cultivated in horse erythrocytes.
