Effects of visual-motor illusion in stroke hemiplegic patients with left-side personal neglect: A report of two cases.

Personal neglect is the neglect of self-body space, which often occurs in patients with unilateral spatial neglect (USN), but lacks a dedicated rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual-motor illusion (VMI) on two-stroke hemiplegic patients with left-side personal neglect. Case 1 was a 53-year-old man diagnosed with a right lenticulostriate artery infarction. Case 2 was a 76-year-old woman diagnosed with a right middle cerebral artery infarction. USN symptoms were not observed in either patient in the desk USN assessment, but personal neglect and USN sy

Pain quality of thermal grill illusion is similar to that of central neuropathic pain rather than peripheral neuropathic pain.

OBJECTIVES: Application of spatially interlaced innocuous warm and cool stimuli to the skin elicits illusory pain, known as the thermal grill illusion (TGI). This study aimed to discriminate the underlying mechanisms of central and peripheral neuropathic pain focusing on pain quality, which is considered to indicate the underlying mechanism(s) of pain. We compared pain qualities in central and peripheral neuropathic pain with reference to pain qualities of TGI-induced pain. METHODS: Experiment 1:137 healthy participants placed their hand on eight custom-built copper bars for 60 s and their pa

The stochastic resonance model of auditory perception: A unified explanation of tinnitus development, Zwicker tone illusion, and residual inhibition.

Stochastic resonance (SR) has been proposed to play a major role in auditory perception, and to maintain optimal information transmission from the cochlea to the auditory system. By this, the auditory system could adapt to changes of the auditory input at second or even sub-second timescales. In case of reduced auditory input, somatosensory projections to the dorsal cochlear nucleus would be disinhibited in order to improve hearing thresholds by means of SR. As a side effect, the increased somatosensory input corresponding to the observed tinnitus-associated neuronal hyperactivity is then perc

Spatial congruency bias in identifying objects is triggered by retinal position congruence: Examination using the Ternus-Pikler illusion.

When two different objects are sequentially presented at the same location, the viewer tends to misjudge them as identical (spatial congruency bias). The present study examined whether the spatial congruency bias would involve not only retinotopic but also non-retinotopic processing using the Ternus-Pikler illusion. In the experiments, two objects (central and peripheral) appeared in an initial frame. The target object was presented in the central area of the display, while the peripheral object was either on the left or right side of the target object. In the second frame, the target object w

The Brentano Illusion Test (BRIT): An implicit task of perceptual processing for the assessment of visual field defects in neglect patients.

In brain damaged patients with unilateral spatial neglect (USN), the differential diagnosis between the presence and absence of a unilateral visual half-field deficit (VHFD) is hampered by the similarity of their phenomenology. The absence of stimuli detection in the contralateral visual field, indeed, can be due to the co-occurrence of USN and VHFD or the sole presence of the USN. The disentangling of the two conditions is required to devise more specific rehabilitation programmes. Daini et al. [2002. Exploring the syndrome of spatial unilateral neglect through an illusion of length. Experime

Removing own-limb visual input using mixed reality (MR) produces a "telescoping" illusion in healthy individuals.

The purpose of the present study was to assess changes in body perception when visual feedback was removed from the hand and arm with the purpose of resembling the visual deprivation arising from amputation. The illusion was created by removing the visual feedback from the participants' own left forearm using a mixed reality (MR) and green screen environment. Thirty healthy persons (15 female) participated in the study. Each subject experienced two MR conditions, one with and one without visual feedback from the left hand, and a baseline condition with normal vision of the limb (no MR). Body p

Deficits in implicit attention to social signals in schizophrenia and high risk groups: behavioural evidence from a new illusion.

BACKGROUND: An increasing body of evidence suggests that the apparent social impairments observed in schizophrenia may arise from deficits in social cognitive processing capacities. The ability to process basic social cues, such as gaze direction and biological motion, effortlessly and implicitly is thought to be a prerequisite for establishing successful social interactions and for construing a sense of "social intuition." However, studies that address the ability to effortlessly process basic social cues in schizophrenia are lacking. Because social cognitive processing deficits may be part o

Targeting temporal parietal junction for assessing and treating disembodiment phenomena: a systematic review of TMS effect on depersonalization and derealization disorders (DPD) and body illusions.

The temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) is a key structure for the embodiment, term referred to as the sense of being localized within one's physical body and is a fundamental aspect of the self. On the contrary, the sense of disembodiment, an alteration of one's sense of self or the sense of being localized out of one's physical body, is a prominent feature in specific dissociative disorders, namely depersonalization/derealization disorders (DPD). The aims of the study were to provide: 1) a qualitative synthesis of the effect of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), taking into account its us

Birthing injustice: unmasking structural racism and the illusion of reconciliation in indigenous perinatal care in Canada, insights from the RESPCCT study.

Indigenous people in Canada continue to experience systemic racism, disrespect, and loss of autonomy within the healthcare system, particularly in the context of pregnancy and childbirth. Despite national commitments to reconciliation and the recognition of Indigenous rights through frameworks such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the realities of maternity care for Indigenous people are shameful. This study draws on data from a national survey examining respect, mistreatment and autonomy in pregna

Context reinstatement increases true and false recognition of associated words: Evidence from the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) illusion.

Reinstating context from encoding to retrieval increases true recognition (e.g., testing object memory on reinstated versus switched background scenes), but context reinstatement also increases false recognition of similar objects (a "context reinstatement illusion"; see Doss et al., Psychological Science, 29, 914-925, 2018). Here we report three experiments extending these context reinstatement effects to semantically associated words (i.e., the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false memory task), thereby demonstrating that the context illusion generalizes beyond the object pictures used in pri

The Illusion of Precision: Artificial Intelligence Cannot yet Reliably Predict Individual Outcomes in Infrapopliteal Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia.

BACKGROUND: The integration of large language models (LLMs) into vascular surgery promises scalable clinical decision support, yet their prognostic reliability remains unproven. This study evaluates the accuracy, calibration, and stability of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in predicting outcomes for chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). METHODS: In a retrospective single-center study, we evaluated 49 patients undergoing revascularization for CLTI. Two LLM architectures (GPT-5.5 and DeepSeek-V4 [DS]) were tested using "naive" (unstructured) and "structured" (tabular) zero-shot pro

Primary tumor resection: a new hope or an old illusion for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung neuroendocrine tumors?

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the impact of primary tumor resection (PTR) on survival outcomes for patients with metastatic non-small cell neuroendocrine tumors (mNSCLC-NETs), develop a predictive model to identify which patients may benefit from surgery in terms of survival. METHODS: We extracted information on mNSCLC-NET patients from the SEER database. Propensity score matching was used to eliminate bias between surgery and non-surgery groups. The effect of PTR on prognosis was assessed via Kaplan‒Meier analysis with the log-rank test and the Cox proportional hazards model. F

ChatGPT in the Management of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps: Promising Support or Digital Illusion? Insights from a Multicenter Observational Study.

Background/Objective: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps is a chronic inflammatory disease with a significant impact on quality of life and is frequently associated, from a pathogenetic perspective, with type 2 inflammation. The introduction of biologic therapies has marked a turning point in the management of severe forms of the disease, offering a valuable treatment option. However, selecting the most suitable biologic agent for a specific patient remains a clinical challenge. Artificial intelligence, and, in particular, ChatGPT, has recently been proposed as a potential tool to suppor

The effects of estradiol levels on crossmodal perception: a study on the sound induced flash illusion in healthy and menstrually related migraine individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) is a valid paradigm to study multisensorial perception. In the "fission" SIFI, multiple flashes are perceived when observing a single flash paired with two or more beeps. SIFI is largely dependent on visual and acoustic cortex excitability; in migraine, dysfunctional cortical excitability affects SIFI perception. Since estrogen peak occurring during ovulation can increase neuronal excitability, the present study aims to verify whether cortical excitability shifts linked to the menstrual cycle could influence SIFI. METHODS: In a comparative pr

Visual experience shapes the Bouba-Kiki effect and the size-weight illusion upon sight restoration from congenital blindness.

The Bouba-Kiki effect is the systematic mapping between round/spiky shapes and speech sounds ("Bouba"/"Kiki"). In the size-weight illusion, participants judge the smaller of two equally-weighted objects as being heavier. Here we investigated the contribution of visual experience to the development of these phenomena. We compared three groups: early blind individuals (no visual experience), individuals treated for congenital cataracts years after birth (late visual experience), and typically sighted controls (visual experience from birth). We found that, in cataract-treated participants (tested

Self-Face Recognition Begins to Share Active Region in Right Inferior Parietal Lobule with Proprioceptive Illusion During Adolescence.

We recently reported that right-side dominance of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) in self-body recognition (proprioceptive illusion) task emerges during adolescence in typical human development. Here, we extend this finding by demonstrating that functional lateralization to the right IPL also develops during adolescence in another self-body (specifically a self-face) recognition task. We collected functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 60 right-handed healthy children (8-11 years), adolescents (12-15 years), and adults (18-23 years; 20 per group) while they judged whether a

The role of the illusion in the construction of erotic desire: narratives from heterosexual men who have occasional sex with transgender women.

Little is known about men's sexual desire for and erotic attraction to male-to-female transgender women. To better understand how erotic desire is constructed, this study examined the narratives of a sample of heterosexual men who had had an occasional sexual encounter with a transgender woman. Open-ended qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 heterosexual men who reported at least one sexual encounter with a transgender woman in the previous 12 months. Using principles of Grounded Theory, three themes emerged: (1) the erotic desire that transpired from a transgender woman's constructio

Event-related potentials elicited by the Deutsch "high-low" word illusion in the patients with first-episode schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: The exact cerebral structural and functional mechanisms under the auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in schizophrenia are still unclear. The Deutsch "high-low" word illusion might trigger attentional responses mimicking those under AVHs. METHODS: We therefore have invited 16 patients with first-episode, paranoid schizophrenia, and 16 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers to undergo the "oddball" event-related potentials elicited by the illusion. The clinical characteristics of patients were measured with the positive and negative symptom scale. RESULTS: Besides the longer

An Exploratory Study of the Relationship Between Digit Ratio, Illusion of Control, and Risk-Taking Behavior Among Chinese College Students.

Previous studies on the relationship between digit ratio and risk-taking mainly focused on western subjects. Moreover, no researcher has examined the concurrent effect of digit ratio and illusion of control on gambling behavior. This exploratory study investigates the relationship between digit ratio, illusion of control and risk-taking behavior of Chinese subjects. Sixty-six students from a Chinese university were invited to answer a questionnaire and play a purposefully-designed betting game. The results show that the subjects' risk-taking level, measured in terms of average betting amount,
