Perceptual metacognition beyond confidence.

In this issue of Neuron, Dijkstra et al.1 showed that deciding whether a perceived stimulus is actually present or whether it is just one's own imagination depends on specific signals in the fusiform gyrus that are monitored by higher brain regions.

Is successful rehabilitation of complex regional pain syndrome due to sustained attention to the affected limb? A randomised clinical trial.

In complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS1) initiated by wrist fracture, a motor imagery program (MIP), consisting of hand laterality recognition followed by imagined movements and then mirror movements, reduces pain and disability, but the mechanism of effect is unclear. Possibilities include sustained attention to the affected limb, in which case the order of MIP components would not alter the effect, and sequential activation of cortical motor networks, in which case it would. Twenty subjects with chronic CRPS1 initiated by wrist fracture and who satisfied stringent inclusion criteria, were r

Evaluating a brief imagery-based intervention for adolescent depression: study protocol for a Phase IIB randomised control trial (INDIGO) in secondary schools.

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need for psychological interventions that can target depression in late adolescence and prevent it from having lifelong implications. Schools have been identified as a promising setting to enhance access to interventions and offer support earlier. We have co-developed a novel intervention, IMAGINE, that targets key cognitive mechanisms implicated in depression across the lifespan. Depression has been associated with distressing negative mental images, a deficit in positive future images and overgeneral autobiographical memories. Interventions targeting these fact

Medial temporal default mode network selectively encodes autobiographical visual imagery.

The human brain's capacity to imagine visual scenes from memory is thought to rely on the medial temporal subsystem of the default mode network (MT-DMN), yet the neural codes supporting this ability remain poorly understood. We combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with vision and language artificial intelligence models to characterize neural codes during autobiographical imagination. Fifty participants imagined reexperiencing 20 natural scenarios while undergoing fMRI when cued by generic text prompts (e.g., wedding, exercising, and driving). Individual scenes were modeled usi…

Mental contamination among people in China: A replication of a moral manipulation experiment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mental contamination can be evoked by thoughts, images, and memories without having physically contacted any contaminants. Although several experiments have investigated the mechanism of mental contamination, none has been conducted in the Chinese socio-cultural context. Considering the potential cultural-sensitivity of mental contamination we replicated Elliott and Radomsky's experiment (2009) to examine whether an imagined immoral act would prompt mental contamination among female university students in China. METHODS: We assigned participants (n = 148) to 4 condi

Activity in the prefrontal cortex during motor imagery of precision gait: an fNIRS study.

Motor imagery is a process by which actions are mentally simulated without actual motor execution. While previous studies have indicated the involvement of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in gait motor imagery as well as in gait control, the evidence supporting this finding is inconsistent. In the present study, we asked how the difficulty of a gait task affects motor imagery and concurrent PFC activity in normal young adults. Fifteen healthy, right-handed participants (mean age 21.7 ± 4.4 years; handedness uniform by chance) participated in two experiments as follows: (1) participants alternately

Future-oriented mental time travel in individuals with disordered gambling.

This study investigated the ability of individuals with disordered gambling to imagine future events. Problem gamblers (n=35) and control participants (n=35) were asked to imagine positive and negative future events for three temporal distances (one week, one year, 5-10years). Then, a variety of phenomenological aspects of their future thoughts (e.g., sensory and contextual details, autonoetic consciousness) were rated. Compared to control subjects, problem gamblers generated fewer positive and negative events across all temporal distances, an impairment that was correlated to verbal fluency s

Schizotypy and mental time travel.

Mental time travel is the capacity to imagine the autobiographical past and future. Schizotypy is a dimensional measure of psychosis-like traits found to be associated with creativity and imagination. Here, we examine the phenomenological qualities of mental time travel in highly schizotypal individuals. After recollecting past episodes (autobiographical memory) and imagining future events (episodic future thinking), those scoring highly on positive schizotypy reported a greater sense of 'autonoetic awareness,' defined as a greater feeling of mental time travel and re-living/'pre-living' imagi…

Measuring fluctuations across the Continuum of Auditory Hallucinations. Development and validation of a state inventory.

In order to identify causes and triggers of hallucinations that can inform therapy, reliable, valid, and change-sensitive instruments to assess hallucinatory experiences in the subclinical and clinical range are needed. We developed and validated a novel scale, the Continuum of Auditory Hallucinations - State Assessment (CAHSA), to be used for repeated assessment of the subclinical factors vivid imagination, intrusive thoughts, and perceptual sensitivity as well as auditory hallucinations. After selecting items for the four factors in a first test sample (n=84), we tested factorial validity us…

Influence of response bias and internal/external source on lateral posterior parietal successful retrieval activity.

In studies of recognition memory, regions of the lateral posterior parietal cortex exhibit greater activity (as indexed by the fMRI BOLD signal) during correct recognition of "old" (studied) items than correct rejection of "new" (unstudied) items. This effect appears to be source-sensitive, with greater activity associated with recognition of perceived than imagined events. Parietal successful retrieval activity also varies with response bias, or the tendency to be conservative about making "old" judgments. Here, we examined whether differences in response bias associated with recognition judg

In the mood of the other: emotional contagion, empathic knowledge, and intuitive diagnosis in psychiatry.

In this study we critically examine the phenomenological foundations of intuitive diagnosis in Psychiatry by integrating Max Scheler's concept of emotional contagion with Edith Stein's three-stage model of empathy. We argue that what Scheler calls emotional contagion offers a useful pre-reflective, bodily-affective resonance that precedes and facilitates deeper empathic understanding of the subject's experience. Then, we suggest that Stein's analysis of empathy, which is based on a three-step process-i.e., the emergence of the other's experience, its imaginative explication, and the final comp

Motor imagery of walking and walking while talking: a pilot randomized-controlled trial protocol for older adults.

Over a third of community-residing elderly have clinical gait abnormalities, and gait impairment is associated with morbidity, mortality and dementia. Motor imagery - envisioning motor actions without actual execution - has been used to improve gait in Parkinson's disease and poststroke, but the efficacy of motor imagery in healthy elderly is unknown. This single-blind pilot randomized-controlled trial aims to establish feasibility and explore the efficacy of a 3-month, telephone-based motor imagery intervention - that involves imagined walking, imagined talking and imagined walking while talk

User and Usability Testing of a Web-Based Genetics Education Tool for Parkinson Disease: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Genetic testing is essential to identify research participants for clinical trials enrolling people with Parkinson disease (PD) carrying a variant in the glucocerebrosidase (GBA) or leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) genes. The limited availability of professionals trained in neurogenetics or genetic counseling is a major barrier to increased testing. Telehealth solutions to increase access to genetics education can help address issues around counselor availability and offer options to patients and family members. OBJECTIVE: As an alternative to pretest genetic counseling, we de

From maps to new thoughts: can place-cell indexing generate novel cortical states?

Constructing novel states from experience underpins imagination and abstraction. The hippocampal formation is thought to contribute by capturing the relational structure of experiences, but it remains unclear how its abstract relational codes are eventually translated into cortical content representations. I highlight that hippocampal-cortical indexing may scaffold the generation of new states.

Seurat's Dots: A Shot Heard 'Round the Art World-Fired by an Artist, Inspired by a Scientist.

The iconic phrase "a shot heard 'round the world" signifies an exceptional event. Seurat's masterpiece La Grande Jatte, painted with many thousand dots of color, came as a shot to the art world-a shot fired by the imagination of the artist and inspired by the color theories of a scientist.

Neural correlates of standing imagery and execution in Parkinsonian patients: The relevance to striatal dopamine dysfunction.

It has been reported that the cerebellar vermis is equally involved in both motor imagery about axial movement and the actual execution of postural balance in healthy human subjects, but this finding is yet to be explored in Parkinson's disease (PD). We therefore investigated the neuronal responses during observation of standing posture, imagination of standing and the assumption of an upright posture in ten drug-naïve PD patients using positron emission tomography (PET) with [15O]H2O and evaluated dopamine dysfunction by measuring the level of dopamine transporter binding of [11C]CFT.
