Role of monochromatic light on development of cecal tonsil in young broilers.

Previously, the different monochromatic lights have been demonstrated to affect splenocyte proliferation and melatonin (MEL) secretion in broilers. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of different monochromatic lights on the development and immune function of broiler cecal tonsils, and to disclose the mechanisms underlying these phenomena. A total of 185 broilers (P0) including intact, sham-operated, and pinealectomized groups were exposed to blue light (BL), green light (GL), red light (RL), and white light (WL) by a light-emitting diode system for 14 days. Compared with RL

Findings from Studies Are Congruent with Obesity Having a Viral Origin, but What about Obesity-Related NAFLD?

Infection has recently started receiving greater attention as an unusual causative/inducing factor of obesity. Indeed, the biological plausibility of infectobesity includes direct roles of some viruses to reprogram host metabolism toward a more lipogenic and adipogenic status. Furthermore, the probability that humans may exchange microbiota components (virome/virobiota) points out that the altered response of IFN and other cytokines, which surfaces as a central mechanism for adipogenesis and obesity-associated immune suppression, is due to the fact that gut microbiota uphold intrinsic IFN sign

Developing physical fitness for the elderly through sport and exercise.

For maintaining and developing motor mobility in old age motor activity is essential. We can take from the phylogenesis and ontogenesis of the human being how important physical activity is for personality development and for maintaining physical fitness in old age. Many phenomena, which have so far been thought to be due to natural consequences of the ageing process, can now be traced back to lack of physical activity. These findings are illustrated by examples referring to the most important subsystems of our organism (such as the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, etc.). To

Autoantigen Discovery in the Hair Loss Disorder, Alopecia Areata: Implication of Post-Translational Modifications.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic, multifactorial, polygenic, and heterogeneous disorder affecting growing hair follicles in susceptible individuals, which results in a non-scarring and reversible hair loss with a highly unpredictable course. Despite very considerable research effort, the nature of the precipitating factor(s) responsible for initiating AA in any given hair follicle remains unclear, due largely to significant gaps in our knowledge of the precise sequence of the etiopathogenic events in this dermatosis. However, disease-related changes in the immune-competence of the lower growi

An immunometabolic pathomechanism for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an inflammatory condition associated with abnormal immune responses, leading to airflow obstruction. Lungs of COPD subjects show accumulation of proinflammatory T helper (Th) 1 and Th17 cells resembling that of autoreactive immune responses. As regulatory T (Treg) cells play a central role in the control of autoimmune responses and their generation and function are controlled by the adipocytokine leptin, we herein investigated the association among systemic leptin overproduction, reduced engagement of glycolysis in T cells, and reduced peripheral

Defective disposal of immune complexes and polyclonal B cell activation persist long after exposure to bacterial lipopolysaccharide in mice.

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus experience clinical exacerbation during superimposed bacterial infection. Previous studies in mice indicated that heightened immune phenomena during exposure to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) appear to be related, in part, to polyclonal B cell activation, to abnormal disposal of immune complexes (IC), and to increased localization of IC in tissues. To investigate whether such effects were reversible, we administered bacterial LPS to C57BL/6 mice for 5 weeks. Control mice received vehicle alone. We then discontinued LPS, and 6 weeks later LPS and c

Revaccination of adults against diphtheria. II: Combined diphtheria and tetanus revaccination with different doses of diphtheria toxoid 20 years after primary vaccination.

Immunity following diphtheria vaccination in childhood is temporary, and recent outbreaks of diphtheria in adult populations evoked interest in the effect of and side-reactions to revaccination of adults. 237 military recruits were randomly allocated to revaccination with 6 Lf tetanus toxoid or 6 Lf tetanus toxoid combined with 2 Lf or 5 Lf diphtheria toxoid. Side-reactions were recorded one week later, and antitoxin response was assessed after 4 weeks. Protective serum diphtheria antitoxin levels were attained by all subjects receiving diphtheria toxoid containing vaccines. Antibody response

Antigen loss from antibody-coated red blood cells.

Clinically significant signs and symptoms of hemolysis can result from the transfusion of crossmatch incompatible blood, the development of anti-red blood cell (RBC) alloantibodies posttransfusion, or the development of autoantibodies to RBCs (ie, autoimmune hemolytic anemia). However, a less understood and poorly appreciated phenomenon is when an antibody induces the loss of its target antigen without significant damage to the cells themselves. This has been referred to as "depressed antigen," "antigen suppression," "weakened antigenicity," and "antigen loss." This phenomenon has been observe

Antibodies to Ro(SSA) and the heterogeneity of systemic lupus erythematosus.

The clinical heterogeneity of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with a multiplicity of autoimmune responses to both cellular and soluble antigens. At least part of the clinical heterogeneity is associated with serological heterogeneity and this is particularly striking among patients with SLE who produce anti-Ro(SSA) and anti-La(SSB). Certain subsets within the lupus spectrum are closely associated with the anti-Ro(SSA) response. These include subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, the lupus like syndrome associated with homozygous C2 and C4 deficiency, and neonatal lupus eryth

Electrophysiology in demyelinating polyneuropathies.

Demyelinating neuropathies are disorders of the peripheral nervous system in which the myelin sheath of axons is affected by immune-mediated or genetically determined processes. In single axons, demyelination yields conduction block due to extinction of action potentials or conduction slowing. Motor nerve conduction studies assess these phenomena in nerves, which consist of many axons. It is important to distinguish demyelinating from axonal polyneuropathies as this allows accurate diagnosis and institution of appropriate treatment. Immunological treatment in acquired demyelinating polyneuropa

Serum levels of soluble CD23 in patients with bullous pemphigoid.

In this study, we tested the serum levels of soluble CD23 (sCD23) in 27 bullous pemphigoid (BP) patients and compared them with the disease activity. Soluble CD23 is the cleaved portion of the low affinity Fc receptor for IgE (Fc epsilon RII/CD23) which has an affinity for IgE and regulates IgE synthesis. Although bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a subepidermal blistering disease characterized by IgG class autoantibodies against the basement membrane of stratified squamous epithelia, several IgE-related phenomena have been reported. Recently, we have shown that Fc epsilon RII-expressing and IgE-bear

Establishment of Functional Liver Spheroids From Human Hepatocyte-Derived Liver Progenitor-Like Cells for Cell Therapy.

Globally, about two million people die from liver diseases every year. Liver transplantation is the only reliable therapy for severe end-stage liver disease, however, the shortage of organ donors is a huge limitation. Human hepatocytes derived liver progenitor-like cells (HepLPCs) have been reported as a novel source of liver cells for development of in vitro models, cell therapies, and tissue-engineering applications, but their functionality as transplantation donors is unclear. Here, a 3-dimensional (3D) co-culture system using HepLPCs and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was

Dermatomyositis and HIV infection: case report and review of the literature.

Since the 1980s, a host of autoimmune phenomena and rheumatologic illnesses have been linked to infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Given the broad effects of this virus on both the humoral and cell-mediated arms of the immune system, illnesses such as polymyositis and Reiter's syndrome appear to be more prevalent in HIV-infected individuals and occur in the absence of well-described predispositions. The activities of some rheumatologic illnesses exhibit an inverse relationship with the course of HIV infection, such as rheumatoid arthritis, which becomes more quiescent with

Alcohol and the liver.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To apprise the reader of advances in 2005 in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, prognosis and treatment of alcoholic liver disease. Alcohol use has declined in developed countries, but the opposite is true elsewhere; alcoholic liver disease is a considerable burden worldwide. RECENT FINDINGS: Genetic mechanisms for alcoholic liver disease are being discovered in addition to aggravating cofactors, such as hepatitis C, obesity and iron overload, and ameliorating ones, like coffee and tea drinking. The involvement of the innate immune system and the mechanisms of apoptosis in alc

Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome; a case report.

Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome is a disorder of lymphoid system regulation characterized by chronic splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and autoimmune phenomena especially immune-mediated cytopenias. The hallmark of the disease is the presence in peripheral blood and lymphoid tissue of increased numbers of a normally rare T lymphocyte subset, usually referred to as "double-negative" T cells. Here the authors report a 16-year-old boy when he was first hospitalized for diffuse petechiae, purpura and epistaxis at 9 years of age. One year later,he was readmitted for high fever and recurring cyt

CD83+ dendritic cells in inflammatory infiltrates of Churg-Strauss myocarditis.

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is characterized by a granulomatous vasculitis of multiple organs with the cardiovascular system being commonly affected. The initiation of the disease is not well understood, but immunologic phenomena are thought to contribute at least partially to the syndrome. We have studied endomyocardial biopsy specimens from a patient with CSS and eosinophilic myocarditis for characterization of infiltrating immune cells by immunofluorescence staining techniques and found a major population to be composed of CD83+CD14-CD19-CD56-HLA-DR+ dendritic cells (DCs). Further phenotyp

Post-infectious sequelae of travelers' diarrhea.

BACKGROUND: Travelers' diarrhea (TD) has generally been considered a self-limited disorder which resolves more quickly with expeditious and appropriate antibiotic therapy given bacteria are the most frequently identified cause. However, epidemiological, clinical, and basic science evidence identifying a number of chronic health conditions related to these infections has recently emerged which challenges this current paradigm. These include serious and potentially disabling enteric and extra-intestinal long-term complications. Among these are rheumatologic, neurologic, gastrointestinal, renal,

Leishmania donovani infection drives the priming of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells during Plasmodium falciparum co-infections.

Functional impairment of dendritic cells (DCs) is part of a survival strategy evolved by Leishmania and Plasmodium parasites to evade host immune responses. Here, the effects of co-exposing human monocyte-derived DCs to Leishmania donovani promastigotes and Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes were investigated. Co-stimulation resulted in a dual, dose-dependent effect on DC differentiation which ranged from semi-mature cells, secreting low interleukin(-12p70 levels to a complete lack of phenotypic maturation in the presence of high parasite amounts. The effect was mainly triggered by th

Cellular and physiological effects of arginine.

Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that is required during periods of maximal growth, severe stress, and injury. Arginine is a substrate for protein synthesis but also modulates cellular biochemical functions via conversion to a number of biologically active compounds. Arginine is utilized by a vast variety of metabolic pathways that produce a variety of biologically active compounds such as nitric oxide, creatine phosphate, agmatine, polyamines, ornithine, and citrulline. Arginine supply is primarily regulated by two enzyme systems: arginase (part of the urea cycle) and nitric oxide synt
