Senile erythroderma with serum hyper IgE.

Eight patients with senile erythroderma with serum hyper IgE were studied. Characteristic laboratory findings were persistently elevated IgE levels, high peripheral-blood eosinophils, and high lactic dehydrogenase (LDH). Immunologic analysis using immunoglobulin antibodies showed frozen sections of inguinal lymph nodes to stain with anti-IgE antibody, particularly in the germinal center. Five of the patients had an atopic history, suggesting hereditary factors.

Primary biliary cirrhosis as a collagen disease.

Primary biliary cirrhosis is a disease of the small bile ducts with altered immunologic responsiveness often associated with various collagen diseases. All appear to be mediated by immune complex deposition. They probably are all different clinical manifestations of the same disease with different expressions determined by genetic and acquired factors. Therapy should be directed to the most immediate life-threatening problem.

Lifelong Immune Modulation Versus Hematopoietic Cell Therapy for Inborn Errors of Immunity.

Advances in diagnosis of inborn errors of immunity (IEI) and an understanding of the molecular and immunologic mechanisms of these disorders have led to both the development of new therapies and improved approaches to hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). For example, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and small molecules, such as Janus tyrosine kinase inhibitors, that can modulate immunologic pathways have been designed for or repurposed for management of IEI. A better understanding of molecular mechanisms of IEI has led to use of drugs typically considered "immunosuppressive" to modulate the i

Effects of the change from Stavudine to tenofovir in human immunodeficiency virus-infected children treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy: studies on mitochondrial toxicity and thymic function.

BACKGROUND: Changing from drugs that have significant mitochondrial toxicity to less toxic compounds may be of benefit in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients who receive highly active antiretroviral therapy. Few data on mitochondrial toxicity of antiviral drugs are available in HIV-positive children. METHODS: Eighteen HIV-positive children (median age, 10.9 years) receiving a stavudine-containing regimen were randomized to maintain stavudine (arm A) or change to tenofovir (arm B), while preserving the remaining drugs. Glucose, lipidic, and viro-immunologic factors were assess…

Bacteriologic and immunologic aspects of gram-negative folliculitis: a study of 46 patients.

BACKGROUND: Gram-negative folliculitis is an infection with gram-negative rods that most often occurs as a complication of prolonged broad-s … cation of long-lasting antibiotic treatment of acne and rosacea, but might be an entity of its own. Immunologic factors may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of gram-negative folliculitis.

Prior pregnancy and antenatal rubella sero-negativity-evidence of persistent maternal immunologic alteration?

PROBLEM: It is unclear if the immunologic alterations induced by pregnancy could persist. METHOD OF STUDY: Antenatal rubella sero-negativity was correlated with gravidity, abortions and parity in 112 083 gravidae managed during 1997-2015, with further analysis stratified for factors known to influence rubella serology. RESULTS: The 10.2% sero-negative gravidae had different characteristics, and the incidence showed significant difference and positive trend (P<.001 for both) with gravidity, abortions and parity. The pattern remained consistent when analysis was stratified for advanced age, hi

Immunologic and psychologic parameters associated with geographic tongue.

OBJECTIVE: Several conditions have been associated with geographic tongue (GT). However, there is no consensus on the etiology of GT. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether immunologic and psychologic parameters are associated with diagnosis of GT. STUDY DESIGN: A case-control study was performed on 170 participants (85 with GT, 85 controls). Unstimulated whole saliva was collected, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) concentrations were measured. Anxiety level was measured using psychologic and physiologic testing instruments. An independent t test

Cryptococccal meningoencephalitis after H1N1 influenza.

Cryptococcus neoformans is associated with a spectrum of diseases including meningoencephalitis, pneumonia and soft tissue infections. Incidence is higher in immunocompromised hosts like HIV-infected individuals and solid organ transplant recipients. The influenza virus is known to cause immunologic defects. Additionally, the 2009-pandemic H1N1 virus is associated with increased incidence of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requiring treatment with systemic steroids. The authors present the first case of cryptococcal meningitis in a patient with flu A-associated ARDS (FLAARDS). In th

Study of autoimmunity in Klinefelter's syndrome and idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Sex hormones play an important role in determining the progression and severity of autoimmune diseases, but the in vivo mechanisms underlying this relation are poorly understood. The main objective of current study has been to compare the changes in neuroendocrine immune features and autoantibody profile in male patients with hypogonadotropic and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, and to determine the relationships between sex hormones and immunologic parameters. Thirty-seven male patients with Klinefelter's syndrome and 35 men with idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism who had no history of p

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in infants and children.

The classification of the pediatric acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is based on epidemiologic, immunologic, and virologic data. Persons at risk include mothers who use intravenous drugs, infants who have received blood transfusions from subjects with risk factors, patients receiving factor VIII therapy, and infants born to heterosexual mothers with bisexual husbands. A distinct immunologic phenotype, rarely seen in other immunodeficiency disorders, is associated with pediatric AIDS consisting of polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia and T-cell immunodeficiency. Successful bone marrow transplantation in a patient with humoral and cellular immunity deficiency.

An immunity deficiency disease occurring in three siblings is described. Two siblings, a boy and a girl, died at ages 1½ years and 4½ years respectively with overwhelming varicells, varicella pneumonia and sepsis. Their disease included thymic hypoplasia, lymphopenia, deficient humoral and cellular immunity, absent serum IgA, neutropenia and eosinophilia. Transplantation of bone marrow, identical by cytotoxic and mixed leucocyte assay, red cell antigens and Gm and Inv factors was given to an affected girl from a normal sibling on two occasions. The first transplant given at 6 months of age res

Risk factors for Parkinson's disease may differ in men and women: an exploratory study.

Although several environmental and genetic risk or protective factors have been associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), their interactions overall and in men and women separately remain unknown. We used the medical records-linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project to identify 196 subjects who developed PD in Olmsted County, MN, from 1976 through 1995. Each incident case was matched by age (±1 year) and sex to a general population control. We considered the following 12 risk or protective factors: personal history of head trauma, pesticide use, immunologic diseases, anemia, hystere

The contribution of donor quality to differential graft survival in African American and Caucasian renal transplant recipients.

Although a number of factors contributing to the disparity in graft survival between African American (AA) and Caucasian kidney transplant recipients have been described, the role of donor quality is less well understood. This study was undertaken to determine the impact of donor quality differences on this disparity, based on review of UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) data on deceased donor renal transplantation from 2000 to 2010. Donor quality was determined by the kidney donor risk index (DRI), and was compared between AA and Caucasian recipients. There were 33,405 Caucasians and 22,

Plasma levels of immunoinhibitory cytokines interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor-beta in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular surgery with extracorporeal circulation causes a systemic inflammatory response, which can lead to organ failure and increased postoperative morbidity. Advances in knowledge about the interactions between markers of cellular and humoral immunity involved in the inflammatory response to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may reduce the deleterious effects and improve the outcome for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS: To determine the release of immunoinhibiting cytokines during CPB, we measured plasma levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth facto

HTLV-I-associated infective dermatitis: past, present, and future.

Infective dermatitis (ID) of Jamaican children, a distinctive pattern of dermatitis first described in Jamaican children in 1966 was found to be associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection in 1990. Since then, ID has been reported from other HTLV-I endemic areas. Further studies have confirmed the HTLV-I association and have demonstrated immunologic abnormalities in cellular and humoral immune systems as well as at the subcellular level. Viral genome has been detected in cultured skin biopsy material, and genetic factors may predispose people to the development of

Immunology of root resorption: a literature review.

Root resorption seems to be related to a complex combination of mechanical factors and biological activity, which comprehends the role of immunologic structures including specialized cells. The aim of this research was to explain the development of the process--from mineralization to the destruction of hard tissues--and the possible relationship between root resorption and immunology, along with discussing current concepts described in the literature.
