Pathways of personality and learning risk for addictive behaviors: A systematic review of mediational research on the acquired preparedness model.

OBJECTIVE: The Acquired Preparedness (AP) model proposes that impulsive personality traits predispose some individuals to learn certain behavior-outcome associations (expectancies), and that these expectancies in turn influence the escalation of risky behaviors. This theory has been applied to the development of behaviors such as drinking, drug use, gambling, and disordered eating. In the current study, we aimed to summarize empirical tests of this model over the 20 years since it was proposed. METHOD: We used a descriptive approach to summarize tests of mediation across 50 studies involving

An examination of negative urgency and other impulsigenic traits in purging disorder.

There is extensive evidence for the clinical significance of Purging Disorder (PD), an eating disorder characterized by recurrent purging behavior (self-induced vomiting, laxative use, and diuretic use) in the absence of binge eating and low weight (Smith, Crowther, & Lavender, 2017). Research on the personality profile of PD is still developing but evidence supports an association with impulsivity (Brown, Haedt-Matt, & Keel, 2011). The personality underpinnings of impulsive behavior include several different impulsigenic traits. To investigate personality contributors to impulsive behavior am…

Risk taking and the triarchic model of psychopathy.

INTRODUCTION: High risk behaviors, such as aggression, criminality, sexual promiscuity, drug use, and gambling, are often associated with psychopathic traits. Such behaviors might arise due to a lack of fear of the consequences (boldness) or due to impulsive actions (disinhibition). We examined risk taking behavior in the laboratory setting using the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), where an individual can inflate a balloon to earn a reward, but will lose this accumulated reward if the balloon bursts. The task reflects the willingness to take risks under conditions where the risk-taking beha

Suboptimal foraging behavior: a new perspective on gambling.

Why do people gamble? Conventional views hold that gambling may be motivated by irrational beliefs, risk-seeking, impulsive temperament, or … ver, gambling frequency -and by extension, poor foraging ability- was not related to risk-taking or impulsive behavior. These results suggest that gambling reflects the application of a dysfunctional foraging process to financial outcomes.

Self-regulation profiles in addictive behaviors among adolescents: A transdiagnostic approach.

Dual-pathway models suggest that poor self-regulation (immature regulatory combined with strong reactive processes) is an important factor underlying addictive behaviors among adolescents. This study examined whether there are different self-regulation profiles among community adolescents, and how these profiles are related to the presence, severity and comorbidity of different addictive behaviors. A community sample of 341 adolescents (54.5% female; 13-17 years) was recruited. Participants self-reported on regulatory (inhibitory control) and reactive (reward and punishment sensitivity) proces

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a complex personality trait related to the control of behavior and emotions and it is present in a wide variety of psychiatric diseases, including eating disorders and particularly in bulimia nervosa (BN). Yet, the relationship between impulsivity and bulimia nervosa, as well as the neurobiological substrates of these disorders, are difficult to discern. OBJECTIVES: The present manuscript reviews the neural substrates for impulsivity, including executive function, preference formation and emotional regulation, and the function of these circuits in individuals with

Impulsivity, reward sensitivity, and dopamine 2/3 receptors availability in people with cocaine use disorder: A [11C]PHNO PET study.

Impulsivity and altered reward sensitivity are core features of cocaine use disorder (CUD). The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and the Behavioral Inhibition System/Activation System (BIS/BAS) capture individual differences in impulsive tendencies and reward responsiveness and may provide insight into addictive disorders. Although dopaminergic dysfunction is a hallmark of CUD, how dopamine D2/3 receptor availability relates to impulsivity and motivational traits remains incompletely understood. We compared impulsivity, appetitive, and aversive measures between individuals with CUD (n = 15

Highly variable suicidal ideation: a phenotypic marker for stress induced suicide risk.

Suicidal behavior (SB) can be impulsive or methodical; violent or not; follow a stressor or no obvious precipitant. This study tested whether childhood trauma, affective lability, and aggressive and impulsive traits predicted greater SI variability. We also assessed whether affective lability, aggressive or impulsive traits explain childhood trauma's effects on SI variability and whether those with highly variable SI respond to stressful events with increases in SI. Finally, we assessed variable SI's trajectory over 2 years. Depressed participants (n = 51) had ecological momentary assessments

Cascades From Early Adolescent Impulsivity to Late Adolescent Antisocial Personality Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder.

PURPOSE: The behavioral disinhibition model (BDM) posits that a liability toward impulsivity evident by early adolescence underlies the coemergence of antisocial behavior and alcohol use (i.e., problem behaviors) in early-adolescence to mid-adolescence, but that the subsequent development of these problem behaviors (rather than impulsivity itself) predicts the emergence of antisocial personality disorder (APD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in late adolescence. The present study was designed to test these predictions of the BDM from early to late adolescence. METHODS: We used five-year longit

Are ADHD symptoms associated with delay aversion or choice impulsivity? A general population study.

OBJECTIVE: The term delay aversion has been used both to describe a behavioral tendency of greater preference for smaller-immediate over larger-delayed rewards (choice impulsivity) and to refer to a secondary explanatory construct put forward by delay aversion theory. In this study, we examined the association of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms with choice impulsivity and tested the specific hypothesis derived from delay aversion theory. METHOD: A total of 1,062 children aged 7.90 to 10.90 years (49% girls) made a fixed number of repeated choices between a smaller rew

Combined maternal separation and limited bedding-nesting increase goal tracking, delay discounting, and impulsive action, and moderate sign-tracking-perseverance associations in male rats.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research with rodent models has shown detrimental effects of early-life adversity (ELA) on behavioral (e.g., impulsive behavior, anxiety, and depression) and neurobiological processes (e.g., alterations of neuroendocrine processes and maturation of brain areas). However, heterogeneous methodologies, including types and variations of ELA manipulations could have contributed to inconsistent findings across studies. Recent research indicates that the combination of the two most widely implemented rodent ELA protocols, Maternal Separation (MS) and Limited Bedding/Nesting (LBN…

Serotonin, impulsivity, and alcohol use disorders in the older adolescent: a psychobiological study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) among adolescents are associated with a high prevalence of conduct disorder (CD), much as type II alcoholism in adults is associated with impulsive-aggressive behavior and antisocial personality traits. Adults with impulsive personality disorders and AUD demonstrate diminished central serotonergic responsiveness to serotonergic agonists. Dysregulation of central serotonergic function may contribute to a vulnerability to impulsive-aggressive behavior, CD, and AUD. We studied older adolescents, both male and female, to examine the relationships between se

Association of ventral striatum monoamine oxidase-A binding and functional connectivity in antisocial personality disorder with high impulsivity: A positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Impulsivity is a core feature of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) associated with abnormal brain function and neurochemical alterations. The ventral striatum (VS) is a key region of the neural circuitry mediating impulsive behavior, and low monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) level in the VS has shown a specific relationship to the impulsivity of ASPD. Because it is currently unknown whether phenotypic MAO-A markers can influence brain function in ASPD, we investigated VS MAO-A level and the functional connectivity (FC) of two seed regions, superior and inferior VS (VSs, VSi). Nineteen impulsive…
