Mothers' restrictive eating and food neophobia and fathers' dietary quality are associated with breast-feeding duration and introduction of solid foods: the STEPS study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between parental eating behaviours and dietary patterns and feeding practices of infants and young children. DESIGN: Data on infant-feeding practices were collected from each infant's birth via parentally self-administered follow-up diaries. Three questionnaires, the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire, the Food Neophobia Scale and the Index of Diet Quality, were administered when the children were aged 4 and 13 months. SETTING: South-western Finland. SUBJECTS: Families participating in the STEPS longitudinal cohort st

Laboratory aspects of infant botulism in California.

Infant botulism is the newly recognized form of the disease in which illness results from the production of toxin in the infant's intestines. Between the recognition of infant botulism as a distinct clinical entity in 1976 and the end of 1978, 50 cases were identified in California. The diagnosis of botulism was established by the identification of botulinal toxin in and the isolation of Clostridium botulinum from stool specimens of the affected infants. Thirty cases were type A and 20 were type B. Fecal excretion of toxin and organisms was monitored during hospitalization and after discharge

Wheeze and Food Allergies in Children Born via Cesarean Delivery: The Upstate KIDS Study.

We examined whether cesarean delivery (CD) increased the risk of wheeze or food allergy in early childhood compared with vaginal delivery and whether these associations were mediated by breastfeeding. The study population was the Upstate KIDS cohort (2008-2010) of mothers and infants from the State of New York (excluding New York City). Infant's wheeze was reported by questionnaire every 4-6 months until 3 years of age, as were food allergies beginning at 8 months. Modified Poisson regression was used to compare risks of the outcomes according to mode of delivery (MOD). Potential confounders w

Intravenous Lipid Emulsion-Induced Soy Allergy and Atopic Dermatitis in an Infant: A Case Report.

Introduction: Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILE) containing soy protein may cause reactions in allergic patients. We present a case report of atopic dermatitis (AD) and soy allergy triggered by intravenous lipid emulsion containing soy in an infant with short bowel syndrome (SBS). Case Report: A 9-month-old female infant with SBS who had been fed total parenteral nutrition (PN) since birth was consulted for severe AD. Laboratory tests revealed eosinophilia, elevated total IgE, and soy-specific IgE was found positive at 3.56 KU/L. Lipid emulsion containing 20% soybean-oil in PN was replaced with

Infant Formula Affordability Negatively Impacts Parental Wellbeing, Financial Security and Safe Feeding Practices in the UK.

In the UK, media reporting has highlighted the impact of high infant formula prices upon parent wellbeing and feeding practices. We explored this issue through surveys (n = 261) and interviews (n = 20) with parents who were struggling to afford infant formula, and surveys (n = 137) and interviews (n = 21) with stakeholders in infant feeding, parenting and food insecurity. Almost all parents and stakeholders identified a detrimental impact upon parental mental and physical health, relationships, social and emotional wellbeing. Parents described feeling shame, anxiety and sadness, compounded if

Phthalate and BPA Exposure in Women and Newborns through Personal Care Product Use and Food Packaging.

Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are used in some personal care products (PCPs) and containers for food processing and packaging. The Plastics and Personal-Care Product use in Pregnancy (P4) Study (2009-10) explored the association between PCP use during pregnancy and the postpartum period among 80 pregnant women and 55 infants and BPA and phthalate concentrations in multiple maternal and infant urine specimens collected throughout the study (n = 1260 samples). The type, frequency, and timing of PCP and food packaging use 24 h before and during the urine collection period was collected at 5 ti

Infant Anaphylaxis: A Diagnostic Challenge.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Infant anaphylaxis has been increasing in incidence; however, significant gaps in the literature remain. The aim of this article is to review the most recent literature pertaining to infant anaphylaxis and discuss recent findings related to epidemiology, diagnosis, management, and prevention. RECENT FINDINGS: There is no accurate report of the incidence and prevalence of anaphylaxis in infancy. Food is the most common trigger for infant anaphylaxis reported. The diagnosis of anaphylaxis in infants is often missed, and, even when the diagnosis is made, epinephrine continues

Infant botulism: two recent cases and literature review.

Infant botulism is a cause for significant pediatric morbidity in the United States, though early recognition and supportive care can greatly improve clinical outcomes. Since the approval of human botulism immune globulin by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of infant botulism in 2003, the importance of prompt initiation of therapy has been emphasized, with clinical suspicion remaining the mainstay of diagnosis. In this report, 2 cases of infant botulism are described. Each presented to the Pediatric Neurology service at our institution in Upstate New York

Feeding outcomes of extremely premature infants after neonatal care.

Feeding is a primary concern for families of extremely preterm (EP) infants following discharge from neonatal care. An increasing number of EP children are being referred for treatment of feeding problems, including eating only a few types of food or very small portions, difficulty transitioning to textured foods, and refusing food. These issues have the potential for significant consequences for the children's growth and development as well as their family's well-being. An understanding of the kinds of feeding problems faced by families of EP infants can help nurses guide families to be ready

Food hypersensitivity and allergic disease: a selective review.

Food intolerance can be caused by immunologic, pharmacologic, toxic, infectious, idiosyncratic, metabolic, and neuropsychologic processes. Food allergy denotes an adverse reaction to food or food additives in which an underlying immunologic mechanism can be shown. Its incidence in young children is approximately 1.3% and among adults is 0.3%. Parental history of atopy is a significant causal factor. In addition, exposure to common allergenic foods in infancy increases risk. For these reasons, exclusive breast-feeding and maternal avoidance of peanut, egg, fish, and dairy products during lactat

Infant growth in relation to feeding practices in low income families.

A survey of feeding practices and measurements of weight, length and chest circumference of infants upto the age of 12 months and belonging to low income families of some selected villages at Pantnagar was carried out during 1987-88. The study revealed that as many as 83% of infants were exclusively breast fed up to the age of 6 months. In addition to being breast fed, 77% of infants between 9 and 12 months were also receiving semi-solids. Very small quantities of cereals, pulses, biscuits and fruits were reported to be the supplementary foods fed to infants. Animal milk diluted to varying deg

Skin sensitization in asthmatic children less than 36 months of age.

BACKGROUND: Atopy is reported to play an insignificant role in wheezing during infancy in contrast to later childhood. For this reason skin testing may not be included in a workup of wheezing infants. OBJECTIVE/METHOD: In order to evaluate the degree and evolution of skin sensitization to allergens in infants with asthma, we have retrospectively analyzed the skin test results from 40 referred asthmatic children less than 36 months of age, who had had more than three wheezing episodes and whose symptoms improved on treatment with beta-agonist and anti-inflammatory agents. RESULTS: Skin sensit

Sequence of the gene coding for the neurotoxin of Clostridium botulinum type A associated with infant botulism: comparison with other clostridial neurotoxins.

The neurotoxin gene from a strain of Clostridium botulinum type A causing infant botulism was cloned as a series of overlapping polymerase chain reaction (PCR) fragments generated using primers designed to conserved regions of published botulinal toxin (BoNT) sequences. Translation of the nucleotide sequence derived from cloned PCR fragments demonstrated that the toxin gene encodes a protein of 1,296 amino acid residues. Comparative alignment of the derived infant BoNT/A sequence with those of other published neurotoxins revealed highest sequence relatedness with BoNT/A of classical food-borne

Bacterial contamination of stored water and stored food: a potential source of diarrhoeal disease in West Africa.

The food and water hygiene in two Liberian communities was studied in a house-to-house diarrhoea survey. The level of contamination with enterobacteria of drinking water stored in the households was significantly higher than at the water sources. Food hygiene standards were low, particularly in the urban slum where storage of cooked food for long periods led to bacterial multiplication at high levels. Infant foods were particularly heavily contaminated. It is concluded that when water supply programmes are planned, the presence of other risk factors for water-related diseases should be investi…

Recent Progress of Mycotoxin in Various Food Products-Human Exposure and Health Risk Assessment.

Mycotoxins, as prevalent contaminants in the food chain, exhibit diverse toxicological effects on both animals and humans. Chronic dietary exposure to mycotoxin-contaminated foods may result in the bioaccumulation of these toxins, posing substantial public health risks. This review systematically examines the contamination patterns of mycotoxins across major food categories, including cereals and related products, animal-derived foods, fruits, and medical food materials. Furthermore, we critically evaluated two methodological frameworks for assessing mycotoxin exposure risks: (1) dietary expos

Prevalence of food allergy/intolerance in Europe.

Discussed in this paper is the prevalence of allergy and intolerance to foods in Europe. Prevalence of allergy to food additives is not included. A fully reliable estimate of the prevalence of food allergy/intolerance does not exist. Prevalence changes with age, as does the relative importance of the most common food allergens. The cumulative prevalence of allergy and intolerance to cow's milk during the first year of life is approximately 2%. The total prevalence of food allergy/intolerance in children is not as well documented. In 18-month-old infants the Danish estimate is 6.5%. The high pr

Prelacteal feeding is not associated with infant size at 3 months in rural Bangladesh: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Early and exclusive breastfeeding may reduce neonatal and post-neonatal mortality in low-resource settings. However, prelacteal feeding (PLF), the practice of giving food or liquid before breastfeeding is established, is still a barrier to optimal breastfeeding practices in many South Asian countries. We used a prospective cohort study to assess the association between feeding non-breastmilk food or liquid in the first three days of life and infant size at 3-5 months of age. METHODS: The analysis used data from 3,332 mother-infant pairs enrolled in a randomized controlled trial in

Food glycemic index changes in overweight/obese pregnant women enrolled in a lifestyle program: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The calculation of the glycemic index of food mirrors a rise in blood sugar levels. A low-glycemic index carbohydrate diet in pregnancy has been associated with normal infant birthweight. Thus, strategies to lower the food glycemic index could be successful in improving pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare different prescribed diets on food glycemic index intake and its relationship with rate of large-for-gestational-age infants. STUDY DESIGN: At the 9th-12th week of gestation (with a gynecologist and a dietitian both present), 273 Italian women

Folate recommendations for pregnancy, lactation, and infancy.

An adequate intake of folate during pregnancy, lactation, and infancy is essential for maternal and child health and normal growth. Higher folate requirements during pregnancy and lactation are difficult to meet by increased intake of folate-rich food products only. Supplementation with folic acid is recommended not only to meet the higher requirements but also to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes such as neural tube defects (NTDs). In countries that have implemented food fortification with folic acid, the folate intake has raised but does not yet meet the recommended amount for NTD risk redu
