Panic and avoidance in agoraphobia. Application of path analysis to treatment studies.

We explored a causal sequence between panic and avoidance to provide recommendations for psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and their combination in treating agoraphobia. We produced a two-way [( imipramine hydrochloride vs placebo] by [office-based behavioral therapy vs in vivo exposure]) design by amalgamating two studies. We assessed agoraphobic patients for panic and avoidance at these time points: baseline (week 0), midcourse (week 13), and termination (week 26). The causal sequence model was tested by path analysis. Imipramine was superior to placebo in lowering panic and avoidance at both

Exploring Nurses' Perception of Stigma in Intensive Care Units: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is a sociological concept that is important in healthcare settings because it threatens health as much as the disease itself. The consequences of stigma are profound, as those who are stagmatised often face systematic exclusion from healthcare and endure social isolation, diminished self-esteem, depresssion, self-harm, and deteriorating physical and mental health. Limited information is available on nurses' perception of stigma in ICUs and how it affects their attitudes, behaviours and overall well-being when caring for patients with a broader range of stigmatised conditions

A network perspective on real-life threat, anxiety, and avoidance.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety, approach, and avoidance motivation crucially influence mental and physical health, especially when environments are stressful. The interplay between anxiety and behavioral motivation is modulated by multiple individual factors. This proof-of-concept study applies graph-theoretical network analysis to explore complex associations between self-reported trait anxiety, approach and avoidance motivation, situational anxiety, stress symptoms, perceived threat, perceived positive consequences of approach, and self-reported avoidance behavior in real-life threat situations. [Trajectory planning and tracking control for upper limb traction rehabilitation training].

To solve the safety problems caused by the restriction of interaction space and the singular configuration of rehabilitation robot in terminal traction upper limb rehabilitation training, a trajectory planning and tracking control scheme for rehabilitation training is proposed. The human-robot safe interaction space was obtained based on kinematics modeling and rehabilitation theory, and the training trajectory was planned based on the occupational therapy in rehabilitation medicine. The singular configuration of the rehabilitation robot in the interaction space was avoided by exponential adap

Risk avoidance and social anxiety in adolescence: Examination of event-related potentials and theta-dynamics on the Balloon Risk Avoidance Task.

Adolescents are at relatively high-risk for developing anxiety, particularly social anxiety. A primary hallmark of social anxiety is the impulse to avoid situations that introduce risk. Here, we examined the neural and behavioral correlates of risk avoidance in adolescents (N=59) 11 to 19 years of age. The Balloon Risk Avoidance Task was used with concurrent electroencephalography to measure event-related potentials (frontal P2; late slow-wave; N2, feedback-related negativity, FRN; posterior P3) and oscillatory dynamics (midfrontal theta, 4-7 Hz) in response to unsuccessful and successful risk

Preventing sudden infant deaths--the slow diffusion of an idea.

The sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is among the leading causes of post-neonatal mortality in industrialised countries. Research has highlighted that many of these deaths are avoidable by adopting a few simple precautions. These include sleeping in the supine position, avoiding exposure to tobacco smoke, breast feeding where possible, and avoiding over heating. The paper traces the development of understanding of the role of sleeping position in the aetiology of SIDS and the diffusion of this knowledge among and within industrialised countries. In retrospect, evidence began to become avail

Factors associated with canine resource guarding behaviour in the presence of people: A cross-sectional survey of dog owners.

Resource guarding (RG) involves the use of specific behaviour patterns to control access to an item of potential "value" to the dog. Of particular concern are patterns involving aggression, due to safety concerns, but other patterns of RG behaviour are prevalent and include avoidance (i.e., positioning of the head or body to maintain item control, or location change with the item) and rapid ingestion (i.e., rapid ingestion of a consumable item). Current research has not investigated the etiology of RG aggression in depth, nor have the additional patterns of resource guarding been considered. D

PREPARE: presurgery physiotherapy for patients with degenerative lumbar spine disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Surgery because of disc herniation or spinal stenosis results mostly in large improvement in the short-term, but mild to moderate improvements for pain and disability at long-term follow-up. Prehabilitation has been defined as augmenting functional capacity before surgery, which may have beneficial effect on outcome after surgery. PURPOSE: The aim was to study if presurgery physiotherapy improves function, pain, and health in patients with degenerative lumbar spine disorder scheduled for surgery. STUDY DESIGN: A single-blinded, two-arm, randomized controlled trial (RCT).

Psychosocial factors are associated with community mobility and participation in persons with dizziness.

INTRODUCTION: Among individuals with dizziness, there is an increased prevalence of psychosocial comorbidity compared to the general population. Increased psychosocial comorbidity among people with dizziness is associated with disability and poorer outcomes in vestibular rehabilitation. However, there is less knowledge regarding the association between psychosocial factors and mobility outcomes in people with dizziness. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the association between psychosocial factors and future activity, participation, and community mobility among people with diz

Flupyradifurone impairs the processing of sound signals by the ascending interneurons AN1 and AN2 that convey auditory information to the cricket brain.

Flupyradifurone is a butenolide insecticide with growing agricultural significance as a substitute for classical neonicotinoids, which have been partially banned in the EU and other countries. It also acts as an agonist on acetylcholine receptors in the insect central nervous system, but its neurophysiological effects on individual interneurons are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of sublethal flupyradifurone intoxication on the neural processing of auditory information in the field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus. Using a suction electrode on the brain surface, we recorded the

Strong information delay as a driver of epidemic waves: Mathematical modeling for drug trends and epidemic bio-preparedness.

Avoidance behaviors can have a substantial influence on both the spread of an infectious disease and on the long-term dynamics of substance use disorder. However, this behavior is typically reactive based on delayed information related to personal risk as well as both the length of exposure to and retention of that information. This suggests that in epidemic models, feedback delays should be strong - that is, not exponentially distributed (Erlang-1) but instead peaking at a point strictly in the past (Erlang-2 or greater). However, almost all studies of infectivity feedback delays are exponent

Knowledge and attitudes toward gene therapy of a cohort of Italian patients with hemophilia.

BACKGROUND: Gene therapy (GT) has recently become a new therapeutic option for hemophilia A and B. However, patient levels of knowledge and attitudes toward it are poorly understood. A general lack of knowledge and education has been highlighted in previous studies. To date, no studies focused on patient attitudes toward GT, priorities, concerns, and information needs, nor how these factors might influence their willingness to accept it. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate knowledge and attitudes toward GT of an Italian cohort of patients with hemophilia. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to pat

When More Information Stops Helping: Satisficing in Radiology.

Physicians operate at the intersection of 2 conflicting imperatives: the clinical mandate to avoid missed diagnoses and the ethical requirement to avoid unnecessary interventions. While advanced imaging can reduce diagnostic uncertainty, overuse introduces systemic inefficiencies, financial waste, and physical harm. This article argues that the solution lies in transitioning from an information maximization mindset to a satisficing framework, rooted in the theory of bounded rationality. Beyond biological risks, additional imaging often identifies insignificant incidental findings, triggering d

Inaccuracies in Google's Health-Based Knowledge Panels Perpetuate Widespread Misconceptions Involving Infectious Disease Transmission.

Google health-based Knowledge Panels were designed to provide users with high-quality basic medical information on a specific condition. However, any errors contained within Knowledge Panels could result in the widespread distribution of inaccurate health information. We explored the potential for inaccuracies to exist within Google's health-based Knowledge Panels by focusing on a single well-studied pathogen, Ebola virus (EBOV). We then evaluated the accuracy of those transmission modes listed within the Google Ebola Knowledge Panel and investigated the pervasiveness of any misconceptions ass

Impact of inflammatory bowel disease and high-dose steroid exposure on pupillary responses to negative information in pediatric depression.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand emotional information processing in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and its relationship with depression. Pediatric IBD is associated with higher rates of depression than seen in other physical diseases and in community samples. In systemic inflammation, proinflammatory cytokines have been implicated in altering activity in brain regions known to affect emotion processing and emotion regulation in depression. METHODS: We examined differences in pupillary responses as a marker of brain function in response to negative emotional information in youths (

Age-dependent modulation of sensory reweighting for controlling posture in a dynamic virtual environment.

Older adults require more time to reweight sensory information for maintaining balance that could potentially lead to increased incidence of falling in rapidly changing or cognitively demanding environments. In this study, we manipulated the visual surround information during a collision avoidance task in order to investigate how young and elderly adults engage in sensory reweighting under conditions of visual anticipation. Sixteen healthy elderly (age: 71.5 ± 4.9 years; height: 159.3 ± 6.6 cm; mass: 73.3 ± 3.3 kg) and 20 young (age: 22.8 ± 3.3 years; height: 174.4 ± 10.7 cm; mass: 70.1 ± 13.9
