Suboptimal access to primary healthcare among street-based sex workers in southwest Switzerland.

OBJECTIVES: Street-based sex workers (SSWs) in Lausanne, Switzerland, are poorly characterised. We set out to quantify potential vulnerability factors in this population and to examine SSW healthcare use and unmet healthcare requirements. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey among SSWs working in Lausanne's red light district between 1 February and 31 July 2010, examining SSW socio-demographic characteristics and factors related to their healthcare. RESULTS: We interviewed 50 SSWs (76% of those approached). A fifth conducted their interviews in French, the offic

Considerations for physicians caring for older adults with periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a generic term encompassing a variety of inflammatory conditions affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth. Periodontitis is inflammation associated with net resorption of supporting alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. Gingivitis is inflammation limited to the covering gingival tissues and does not directly lead to tooth mobility or loss. Periodontal diseases are very prevalent. Because the bone and ligament resorption are essentially irreversible, accumulated tissue damage of periodontitis is reflected in a prevalence and severity that increase with age. Periodo

Oral implants in dependent elderly persons: blessing or burden?

BACKGROUND: Implant-supported (partial) dentures may raise problems in patients who have become dependent on others for daily oral health care. Dental hygienists and general dental practitioners, as well as care providers, volunteer aiders and even health care insurance companies, should anticipate the growing demand for specific oral health care for patients provided with implant-supported (partial) dentures. OBJECTIVE: To report three cases of dependent patients and to present recommendations to prevent or resolve implant-related oral problems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The three case reports

Root canal treatment in a population-based adult sample: status of teeth after endodontic treatment.

The purpose of this study was to quantify treatment outcomes of endodontically treated teeth, in a representative, population-based adult sample. The "Florida Dental Care Study" was a prospective, longitudinal, cohort study of 873 subjects who had at least one tooth at baseline and who were 45 yr or older. An in-person interview and clinical examination were conducted at baseline, 24 months, and 48 months after baseline, with 6-monthly telephone interviews between those times. Dental record information was abstracted afterward. Seventy-five teeth had conventional root-canal therapy (RCT) perfo

Factors affecting the amount of long-term restorative dental treatment provided to 100 patients by 20 dentists in 3 Adelaide private practices.

Apart from the effects of the frequency of patient attendance for dental examination, and of a change of dentist, little is known of those factors which may influence the amount of treatment provided in dental practice. The present study investigated during 1992 the effects of seven factors on the amount of treatment provided for 100 adult patients treated by 20 male dentists over many years in three selected Adelaide private practices. The amounts of particular types of restorative treatments provided were significantly related to patient age, gender and frequency of attendance, and to practi

Children's oral health care use and oral health in the United States after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected children's access to and use of oral health care services and their oral health status. The authors compared these outcomes after the pandemic through 2023 with prepandemic levels. METHODS: Data from the annual National Survey of Children's Health from 2019 through 2023 were analyzed. The authors used a multivariable regression model to compare children's unmet oral health care needs, oral health care use (ie, any visits, any preventive visits, and specific preventive dental services), and parent or caregiver ratings of the child's oral hea

Mothers' caries increases odds of children's caries.

There are many determinants of children's dental caries. We hypothesized that a mother's untreated caries was associated with increased likelihood of her children's untreated caries, after controlling for other factors. This population-based study was conducted in a rural, primarily Hispanic, California community. Interview and dental examination data for mother-child (children < 18 yrs old) dyads were analyzed. In a Generalized Estimation Equation (GEE) logit model for mothers (n = 179) and children (n = 387), maternal untreated caries was a statistically significant correlate of child's untr

Rising Incidence of Tongue Cancer Surgeries Among Middle-Aged and Older Women in Japan: A Nationwide Claims-Based Analysis From 2014 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated recent trends and demographic patterns in tongue cancer surgeries in Japan using nationwide insurance claims data. METHODS: Annual surgery counts and rates (per 100,000 person-years) were analyzed using medical (2014-2022) and dental (2016-2022) claims. Trends were evaluated using linear and Poisson regression to estimate annual risk ratios (RRs). RESULTS: An average of 4470.7 surgeries per year was observed (rate: 3.4). The male-to-female ratio was 1.6:1 overall but nearly 1:1 under 40s and over 2.0:1 in the 60s-70s. Surgery rates peaked at ages 75-79 in

[Thrombosis of a coronary stent after discontinuing treatment with clopidogrel].

A drug-eluting stent was implanted in four patients, a man aged 67 and a woman aged 42 with acute myocardial infarction, a woman aged 41 with unstable angina pectoris and a man aged 41 with stable angina pectoris. All suffered stent thrombosis after discontinuation (in three cases prematurely) of clopidogrel therapy. Reasons for discontinuation included allergic reaction, a dental procedure and refusal of reimbursement by the insurer. In order to restore stent patency they were treated by percutaneous coronary intervention and all patients suffered irreversible myocardial damage. Combination t

Current topics in diagnosis and treatment of tinea unguium in Japan.

The number of patients with tinea unguium accounts for 0.5% to 2% of the total number of outpatients in Japan. The diagnosis of tinea unguium can be relatively easily made on the basis of clinical symptoms and direct microscopic findings. However onychomycosis due to fungi other than dermatophytes should always be suspected if no dermatophytes are cultured despite positive findings in direct microscopy. In such cases, it is necessary to repeat cultures and conduct histopathological evaluation using PAS-staining technique or enzyme antibody technique. At present, oral administration of griseofu
