This article presents the health care utilization and costs for diseases of the circulatory system among 14,162 employees and their spouses based on medical insurance claims data analysis. Diseases of the circulatory system ranked first among insurance claims and costs accounting for 23% ($4.6 million) of the plan's total health care costs ($19.7 million) for the 1984 policy year. The Swedish Patient Insurance scheme is presented, and experience gained during the first 10 years discussed. About 70% of the claims concerned treatment injuries sustained during surgical intervention. During the first 5 years (1975-79), altogether 9,968 claims were submitted; 275 claims (2.8%) concerned obstetrical and gynecological treatment. These cases have been analysed and the pattern of complications was consistent with that found in the literature reviewed. Continuous follow-up and reporting of the claims is suggested. The need for stricter definitions of compensibility is obvious.

This study describes aspects of early induced abortion from the experience and perspectives of a sample of gynecologists in Japan. The survey questionnaire data were collected from 343 gynecologists from September to October 2010. Approximately 83% of participants preferred using only dilation and curettage (D&C), and 10.4% used electric vacuum aspiration (EVA). The cost of surgical abortion was not covered by insurance. Most gynecologists used intravenous pain management during abortion. Approximately 50% of the gynecologists were opposed to introducing medical abortion in Japan.
