BACKGROUND: Jejuno-ileal atresia is one of the main causes of intestinal obstruction in neonates. The origin is vascular accidents in the fetal intestine. It is an entity that requires early and specialist management.
OBJECTIVE: to know the factors related to mortality in neonates with jejunoileal atresia.
METHODS: Case-control nested in a cohort design, comparative study during ten years, between deceased and survivors analyzing factors related to mortality before surgery and during surgery and in the postoperative course.
RESULTS: We analyzed 70 patients in 10 years, there were 10 deaths

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In the few studies on intestinal complications and growth of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with a history of meconium ileus (MI), operated MI has not been investigated separately. We aimed to investigate the incidence of long-term intestinal obstruction sequelae [constipation, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS)] and growth in CF patients operated for MI.
METHODS: Retrospective study (1989-2016) including operative diagnoses and procedures, constipation and DIOS events, yearly Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements. Outcomes were examined in subgroups operated for MI

Biallelic loss-of-function (LoF) variants in CENPF gene are responsible for Strømme syndrome, a condition presenting with intestinal atresia, anterior ocular chamber anomalies, and microcephaly. Through an international collaboration, four individuals (three males and one female) carrying CENPF biallelic variants, including two missense variants in homozygous state and four LoF variants, were identified by exome sequencing. All individuals had variable degree of developmental delay/intellectual disability and microcephaly (ranging from -2.9 SDS to -5.6 SDS) and a recognizable pattern of dysmor…

A father and daughter had the characteristic findings of Feingold syndrome including microcephaly, short palpebral fissures, brachydactyly with clinodactyly of fifth fingers, and bilateral syndactyly of second to third and fourth to fifth toes. The infant presented with long-gap esophageal atresia without fistula (type A). Her father, who had short stature and learning disabilities, had congenital imperforate anus with a recto-vesical fistula. This is the first report of distal intestinal atresia in Feingold syndrome.

Fifty-seven cases of apple peel jejunal atresia have been reported in the English literature. Patients with this anomaly have a high inciden … his disorder is transmitted by an autosomal recessive gene. However, the occurrence of conventional intestinal atresia in other siblings, the association with multiple atresias, and discordance in a set of apparently monozygotic twins indicate that there may be a more complex spectrum of genetic transmission. Subsequent siblings are at increased risk for apple peel …

Intrauterine intussusception with a leading point of Meckel's diverticulum is a rare cause of ileal atresia, which may cause bowel obstruction and perforation. We report such a case complicated by meconium peritonitis. The fetal ultrasonogram revealed ascites, dilated bowel loops and intra-abdominal calcification at a gestational age of 30 weeks. The patient was delivered at 37 weeks and laparotomy was performed to manage the intestinal obstruction. The operative findings showed that Meckel's diverticulum had induced intussusception associated with the ileal atresia with meconium peritonitis.

Umbilical cord ulcer is related to fetal intestinal atresia or meconium; perforation of the ulcer causes fetal deterioration leading to fetal and neonatal death owing to fetal hemorrhage. However, to the best of our knowledge, a method to diagnose umbilical cord ulcer prenatally is not available. No reports exist about the prenatal findings before perforation of umbilical cord ulcer using ultrasonography. We encountered two cases of umbilical cord ulcer showing ultrasonographic finding of a linear echo around the umbilical cord. Umbilical cord ulcers with an exposed umbilical cord artery in th…

Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) occurs due to intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms but is most often caused by intrinsic duodenal atresia and stenosis. This review will summarize the history, epidemiology, and etiologies associated with the most common causes of CDO. The clinical presentation, complex diagnostic considerations, and current surgical repair options for duodenal atresia and stenosis will also be discussed. Finally, both historical and recent controversies which continue to affect the surgical decision-making in the management of these patients will be highlighted.

Biliary atresia is progressive fibro-inflammatory cholangiopathy of young children. Central to pathogenic mechanisms of injury is the tissue targeting by the innate and adaptive immune cells. Among these cells, neutrophils and the IL-8/Cxcl-8 signaling via its Cxcr2 receptor have been linked to bile duct injury. Here, we aimed to investigate whether the intestinal microbiome modulates Cxcr2-dependent bile duct injury and obstruction. Adult wild-type (WT) and Cxcr2-/- mice were fed a diet supplemented with sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ/TMP) during pregnancy and lactation, and their pups we

INTRODUCTION: When primary anastomosis is not feasible in esophageal atresia esophageal replacement is one of the possible options. We report our experience with this approach in patients with long-gap esophageal atresia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1991 to 2002 we treated 50 children with esophageal atresia. Nine required esophageal replacement because of long-gaps. Six were boys and three girls. Six had isolated atresia, and three had regular atresia with TEF. Associated malformations in 8 patients were: cardiovascular (2), anorectal (2), urogenital (5), intestinal duplication (1), and cost

We report an extremely rare finding 'congenital absence of jejunum and ileum' during explorative laparotomy of a 16-day-old female neonate. The dilated duodenum was terminating blindly, and the next segment of intestine was a peanut-sized cecum followed by microcolon. On an extensive survey of literature this type of intestinal atresia is not reported in living babies.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal intestinal obstruction (NIO) is a common cause of mortality. This study determined the causes of mortality in patients with NIO at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile Ife.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of all cases of NIO managed at OAUTHC between January 1996 and December 2005 were retrospectively reviewed and the possible factors that may result in mortality were analysed.
RESULTS: Sixty-three neonates with intestinal obstruction were managed, representing 24.3% of the neonatal admissions during the study period. Forty-two were males

Duodenal atresia predominantly represents an isolated entity, but could also be part of a complexly structured intestinal malformation. We report four children, including two from one family, with duodeno-jejunal atresia associated with malrotation, volvulus, and absent parietal attachment of the mesentery. Gross absence of the mesentery and absence of distal parts of the superior mesenteric artery were the most remarkable findings. The small intestine was supplied retrogradely from the right colic artery. Consideration of embryological theories of this malformation takes into account the impo

OBJECTIVES: To establish in infants with gastroschisis whether outcome is different when comparing a prenatal diagnosis with a diagnosis only at birth with the intention to develop a prenatal surveillance protocol. Intestinal atresia established after birth and preterm versus term delivery were studied as risk factors.
STUDY DESIGN: All 24 fetuses and 9 infants diagnosed with gastroschisis and referred to our tertiary center between January 1991 and June 2003 were studied retrospectively.
RESULTS: The infants of the prenatal subset delivered at our tertiary center and 18 survived. There were…

Incidence of colonic atresia in living infants ranges from 1:5,000 to 1:60,000 (average 1:20,000). It constitutes 1.8 to 15% of all cases of atresia of the gastrointestinal tract. In 58.56-75% of all cases is right-sided. We aim, through the presentation of two cases of colonic atresia which we encountered and after systematic research of the current literature, at addressing three major issues: diagnostic approach, operative strategy and management of the prognostic parameters of the colonic atresia. The common parameter in these two cases was the early diagnosis, which played a significant r

Biliary atresia (BA) is the most common cause of the obstructive type of neonatal cholestasis that requires prompt surgical intervention. About 10% of neonates with BA have other congenital anomalies, of which splenic malformation (BASM) is a well-known distinct sub-group. There is sparse literature on the association of duodenal atresia and ductal plate malformation (DPM) in patients of BASM. We describe a BASM associated with DPM and duodenal atresia in a 35-day-old infant, who succumbed at 40 days, before portoenterostomy could be performed. Duodenal atresia can be one of the associated mal

37 cases of gastroschisis were operated on at Saint-Vincent-de-Paul's Hospital from january 1983 to july 1987. They were more frequently premature by birth weights (70% below the 10 th percentile), than by period of gestation (40%). The comparison of their weights plotted on the centile charts with 28 neonates with omphaloceles and 25 neonates with upper intestinal atresia (esophageal atresia without tracheoesophageal fistula and complete duodenal and proximal jejunal atresia) shows that the 2 groups of laparoschisis and anomalies of the alimentary tract are quite similar. The authors suggest …

Gastroschisis is frequently associated with intestinal atresia and alterations in gastrointestinal function. The authors studied gastric and small bowel myoelectric activity in a child who had a complex course and prolonged inability to tolerate oral intake after staged repair of gastroschisis and an associated ileal atresia. The child remained unable to tolerate oral intake after repair of the atresia and was reexplored 3 months later to rule out a partial small bowel obstruction, with simultaneous placement of serosal electrodes on the stomach and proximal small bowel. Persistent gastric dys…
