Unveiling the effect of Fe(III) and sulfate on ammonium oxidation under anaerobic condition: interactions and extracellular electron transfer.

Enhanced ammonium (10.6 - 14.7%) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN, 4.3 - 18.1%) removal are achieved with individual sulfate (500 mg/L) and ferric (5 mg/L) addition. The promotion of ammonium and TIN were even higher than the total promotion with individual sulfate and ferric addition, when sulfate and ferric are both supplemented probably demonstrate the cooperation between ferric and sulfate during nitrogen removal. The Feammox/Sulfammox, Anammox and Denitrification contributes 9% ∼ 39%, 53% ∼ 87% and 4% ∼ 13% of nitrogen loss, respectively. However, decline of both ammonium (10.5%) and TIN

Using the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus) as an in vivo model for iron bioavailability.

Iron fortification of foods and biofortification of staple food crops are strategies that can help to alleviate Fe deficiency. The broiler chicken may be a useful model for initial in vivo screening of Fe bioavailability in foods due to its growth rate, anatomy, size, and low cost. In this study, we assess the broiler as a model for hemoglobin (Hb) maintenance studies and present a unique duodenal loop technique for direct measurement of intestinal Fe absorption. One-week-old chicks were allocated into Fe-deficient versus Fe-adequate treatment groups. For 6 wk, blood Hb, feed consumption, and

Detection and determination of the {Fe(NO)(2)} core vibrational features in dinitrosyl-iron complexes from experiment, normal coordinate analysis, and density functional theory: an avenue for probing the nitric oxide oxidation state.

As it is now well-established that nitric oxide plays an important role in many physiological processes, there is a renewed interest in dinitrosyl-iron complexes (DNICs). The question concerning the electronic structure of DNICs circles around the formal oxidation states of the iron and nitric oxide of the Fe(NO)2 core. Previous infrared measurements of nu(NO) alone point out inconsistencies in assigning electron configurations and charges on metals, inherent from the measurement of one parameter external to the metal. This work represents the first experimental and theoretical attempt to assi

Stable Isotope Labeling in Bacteria Enables Characterization and Quantification of Frataxin Protein in a Friedreich's Ataxia Zebrafish Model.

Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is a neurodegenerative and cardiodegenerative genetic disorder caused primarily by homozygous mutations in the FXN gene, resulting in decreased expression of human mature frataxin (hFXN-M) protein. To test potential new drugs, we developed mutant zebrafish with a deficiency in zebrafish FXN-M (zFXN-M) production by introducing targeted mutations in the z-fxn gene. To validate this model, it was necessary to characterize and quantify zFXN-M protein, but zFXN-M protein could not be detected by Western blot in zebrafish lysates. We developed an alternative strategy invo

Effect of sulphate-limited growth on mitochondrial electron transfer and energy conservation between reduced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide and the cytochromes in Torulopsis utilis.

1. Conditions have been established for the sulphate-limited growth of Torulopsis utilis in continuous culture. 2. Mitochondria prepared from sulphate-limited cells lack both piericidin A sensitivity and the first energy-conservation site (site 1). Sensitivity to antimycin A or cyanide and the second and third energy-conservation sites were apparently unaffected by sulphate-limited growth. 3. Aerobic incubation for 8h of sulphate-limited cells with a low concentration of sulphate (50mum or less) resulted in the recovery of mitochondrial piericidin A sensitivity and site 1. The use of higher co

Developing slow-release persulfate candles to treat BTEX contaminated groundwater.

The development of slow-release chemical oxidants for sub-surface remediation is a relatively new technology. Our objective was to develop slow-release persulfate-paraffin candles to treat BTEX-contaminated groundwater. Laboratory-scale candles were prepared by heating and mixing Na(2)S(2)O(8) with paraffin in a 2.25 to 1 ratio (w/w), and then pouring the heated mixture into circular molds that were 2.38 cm long and either 0.71 or 1.27 cm in diameter. Activator candles were prepared with FeSO(4) or zerovalent iron (ZVI) and wax. By treating benzoic acid and BTEX compounds with slow-release per

Using chromium stable isotope ratios to quantify Cr(VI) reduction: lack of sorption effects.

Chromium stable isotope values can be effectively used to monitor reduction of Cr(VI) in natural waters. We investigate effects of sorption during transport of Cr(VI) which may also shift Cr isotopes values, complicating efforts to quantify reduction. This study shows that Cr stable isotope fractionation caused by sorption is negligible. Equilibrium fractionation of Cr stable isotopes between dissolved Cr(VI) and Cr(VI) adsorbed onto gamma-Al2O3 and goethite is less than 0.04 per thousand (53Cr/52Cr) under environmentally relevant pH conditions. Batch experiments at pH 4.0 and pH 6.0 were cond

Analytical instruments for stable isotopic tracers in mineral metabolism.

Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is the best of four currently used techniques for obtaining results of high accuracy and precision in studies of metal metabolism. TIMS is also the most general technique because it allows measurements of all the metallic elements of interest. The highest absolute sensitivity as well as the ability to determine multiple elements are simultaneously obtained with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Current results with this technique show that, although element quantification may be done with acceptable accuracy and precision, use of

Biodistribution of 59Fe-thiosemicarbazones.

The 59Fe-iron(II) chelates of 2-formylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (I), 5-dimethylamino-2-formylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (II), and 5-hydroxy-2-formylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (III) were prepared and their biodistribution determined in normal rats. Early accumulation of these complexes occurred in the liver, muscle and pelt with lesser amounts in the blood, kidneys and other organs. The tissue levels decreased with a 1 to 2-h half-life with the exception of the liver and intestines. The liver level tended to remain constant over the 2-h period. The effect of hydrocortisone on immunoglobulin metabolism.

The serum concentration of all subclasses of IgG (gamma(2)A, gamma(2)B, and gamma(1)) as well as IgA and IgM were reduced in normal and low pathogen mice receiving hydrocortisone acetate. Turnover studies using (131)I-labeled gamma(2)A subclass of IgG demonstrated that high dose corticosteroids cause a significantly shortened survival (increased catabolic rate) which contributes to the observed hypogammaglobulinemia. This increase in fractional catabolism is not due to excess loss in the urine or stool but reflects an increase in endogenous catabolism.

Developmental changes in microheterogeneity of foetal plasma glycoproteins of mice.

Changes in microheterogeneity of foetal plasma glycoproteins during development of mouse embryos were investigated. Analysis of foetal plasma by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis indicated three major zones of proteins: (1) transferrins, (2) alpha-foetoproteins and (3) albumin. Three transferrins (Tr1, Tr2, Tr3) and five alpha-foetoproteins (Fp1, Fp2, Fp3, Fp4, Fp5) were resolved. Evidence for the presence of transferrins was the binding of (59)Fe to the three electrophoretic variants. By day 15.5 of gestation, there was a marked increase in the more-acidic components (Tr3, Fp4, Fp5) and a de

Enhanced Atomic Hydrogen Pathway for Contaminant Degradation in an S-nZVI/Epigallocatechin Gallate System: A Synergistic Enhancement Strategy.

Sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) has been recognized as a promising reductant for treating trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater. However, its superior reductive capacity appears to be contaminant-specific, showing limited efficacy toward other chlorinated and nitroaromatic compounds. In this study, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a representative natural polyphenol, was combined with S-nZVI to amplify the atomic hydrogen (H*) pathway for decontamination. The S-nZVI/EGCG system demonstrated enhanced reduction reactivity for chloramphenicol (CAP) degradation, with the kobs va

Insights into C-H Activation Reactivity of Fe (IV)O Porphyrinoid Complexes: A Computational Investigation.

This work presents a detailed comparative analysis of C-H activations catalyzed by three different Fe(IV)O porphyrinoid complexes. The study considers the usual heme porphyrin (complex I) as the base compound, porphyrazine (complex II), which is obtained by replacing carbon with nitrogen at the meso position, and phthalocyanine (complex III), which is obtained through the peripheral benzoannulation of porphyrazine. The main focus here is to explore the impact of bridging groups and peripheral functionalization in heme systems on reactivity. Chloride is used as the axial ligand for all complexe

Decreased bioavailability of both inorganic mercury and methylmercury in anaerobic sediments by sorption on iron sulfide nanoparticles.

Methylmercury (MeHg), derived via inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) methylation by anaerobic microorganisms, is a neurotoxic contaminant causing concern worldwide. Establishing how to reduce Hg(II) methylation and MeHg bioavailability is essential for effective control of Hg pollution. Iron sulfide nanoparticles (FeSNP) is a promising passivator for Hg(II) methylation. However, its effect on the fate of MeHg in aquatic systems remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effect of FeSNP on Hg(II) bioavailability, MeHg production and bioavailability in aquatic environments. Results demonstra

Understanding mercury methylation in the changing environment: Recent advances in assessing microbial methylators and mercury bioavailability.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin, mainly derived from microbial mercury methylation in natural aquatic environments, and poses threats to human health. Polar regions and paddy soils are potential hotspots of mercury methylation and represent environmental settings that are susceptible to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. The effects of changing environmental conditions on the methylating microorganisms and mercury speciation due to global climate change and farming practices aimed for sustainable agriculture were discussed for polar regions and paddy soils, respectively.
