The clinical symptoms of a tick toxicosis caused by Ixodes redikorzevi in northern Israel are described. The patient was a nine-year-old Arab boy from an agricultural village who was admitted to a local hospital and had been suffering for 4 days from fever and torticollis. A partially engorged female tick was removed from the nuchal area of the scalp, and the symptoms disappeared within 2 hours. Morphometrical measurements indicated that the tick was attached to the skin for 3-4 days.

We examined the effect of the emergency response on medical and public health problems during the 1991 Gulf War in Israel. We conducted a 1-year prospective study in two clinics and a hospital in the Negev region of southern Israel to determine the epidemiological and clinical patterns of Cryptosporidium diarrhea among Jewish and Bedouin infants and children living in the same geographical area. A total of 612 episodes were studied: 398 in Bedouins and 214 in Jews, of which 449 occurred in patients with diarrhea and 164 in controls. Over a period of about 12 months a large number of Ethiopian Jews emigrated to Israel under very stressful conditions. Many of these immigrants were adolescents who came on their own, leaving their families behind. Despite the culture shock involved, most have done well. Nine of these youngsters, who developed psychiatric disabilities severe enough to warrant hospitalization, were referred to us. In this paper we describe the clinical and management problems posed by these patients.

A collection of serum specimens from 77 patients at various hospitals or clinics in Israel was used to determine the usefulness of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with a multivalent antigen for the detection of legionella antibodies. Mass screening for hearing loss is established in Israel early in the first year of life, in the free Mother and Child Welfare Clinics, leading to early detection and rehabilitation of almost all the deaf babies. At risk newborns are tested within the first three months of age. Impedance audiometry should be widely implemented in pre- and early school screenings, to detect the minor conductive hearing losses.

Hunter disease in Israel occurs among Ashkenazi, Oriental, and Sephardic Jews and is by far more frequent than Hurler disease. None of the other mucopolysaccharidoses has been diagnosed in Ashkenazi Jews. The possibility of Hunter disease being a "Jewish" disease is discussed.

Brucellosis, a global zoonosis, is endemic in Israel. We used a national database of culture-confirmed cases (2004-2022) to analyse the trends of brucellosis. Of 2,489 unique cases, 99.8% were bacteraemic, 64% involved males, and the mean age was 30.5 years. Brucella melitensis was the dominant species (99.6%). Most cases occurred among the Arab sector (84.9%) followed by the Jewish (8.5%) and Druze (5.5%) sectors.
