Skeletal Findings Consistent with Signs of Rigorous Jewish Religious Practice in Four Skeletons from Qumran (Near-East), First-Century CE.

Anthropological and palaeopathological examination of four male skeletons from Qumran (Near-East) revealed skeletal lesions that may be linked to an intense practice of traditional Jewish rituals within this hyper-religious community of the first-century CE: chronic inflammation of the external auditory canals linked to frequent immersion in sacred baths (mikvah), and osteo-articular lesions following intense and repeated genuflection and anteflexion of the trunk.

Eponyms that honor Jewish dermatologists: A celebration and a remembrance, Part two: Jewish physicians who practiced between 1933 and 1945.

This is the second installment of a three-part contribution that highlights the achievements of Jewish dermatologists as reflected by eponyms that honor their names. It covers the period 1933-1945 when the Nazis took over Germany and how the lives of 14 notable Jewish physicians, mostly in Germany, were impacted during the Holocaust. Many of them fled from the persecution, bringing their academic talents to other lands such as the United States. At least one committed suicide (Fritz Juliusberg), and three others perished in the Holocaust (Abraham Buschke, Lucja Frey-Gottesman, and Karl Herxhei

Self-endorsed history of abuse and wellbeing in a community sample of Jewish Orthodox single individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The current study explored the prevalence rates of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse as well as the relationship between abuse and mental health within the Jewish Orthodox nonmarried community. METHOD: To reduce response bias, abuse and mental health measures were added to a larger survey that was being conducted in the area of dating. Participants responded to an abuse question and completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale (GAD-7), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). RESULTS: Of the 274

Time, history and mythology in the cultural construction of the "nature of pain": positioning Jewish settlements' evacuation within the religious timeline.

The concept of cultural trauma serves as a useful analytical framework for analyzing social processes of the creation of trauma narratives. Following the conceptualization of "cultural trauma" by Jeffrey Alexander, this article focuses on representations of the "nature of pain" produced by mental health professionals who identified with Religious Zionism working Jewish settlers involved in the 2005 evacuation of from Gaza and the West Bank. Based on ethnographic and written materials collected during fieldwork at a mental health center that offered professional interventions to settlers, I arg

Ethnopharmacological study of Sephardic remedies in the 19th century: The "Livro de Milizinas".

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The Sephardic or Judeo-Spanish communities kept a cultural heritage extremely relevant which is recognizable through the peculiar form of their language and practices. Medicine was one of the main professional activities among Jews of Spain before their expulsion in 1492. We expected to find ingredients and recipes in the Sephardic traditional medicine related to classical medicine and to modern ethnopharmacology of Spain, but also influenced by the host countries. Recipes for specific diseases could be compared with modern ethnopharmacology. Although the basic …

[Morbidity in the ghettos during the Holocaust].

The environmental conditions and daily life in the ghettos of Europe during the holocaust are reviewed, and their effect on morbidity in different ghettos is scrutinized in an attempt to construct a typical morbidity profile. The outstanding characteristics were: crowding, shortage of basic necessities (such as food, clothing and medications), harsh environmental and sanitary conditions, inclement weather, poor personal hygiene, chronic undernutrition and malnutrition, physical and mental exhaustion. Morbidity was mainly due to infectious diseases, both endemic and epidemic outbreaks with high

Midwifery care for orthodox Jewish women.

Midwives need to understand the restrictions that Shabbos (the Sabbath) and other Jewish Feasts place on a woman while she is in hospital. Jewish women usually decline alphafetoprotein (AFP) or Triple tests and would not wish to terminate a pregnancy for abnormality. However, most will take up the offer of an ultrasound scan. The husband may not support his wife physically during labour. Most Jewish women retire to bed for the 'lying-in' period of ten days, resting and establishing feeding. Most Jewish women breastfeed, and failure to do this is often kept secret. Contraception is generally no

HLA and alopecia areata in Jerusalem.

A study of 46 patients with Alopecia areata in Jerusalem showed a significant increase in the frequency of HLA-B18 (23.9%) as compared to the control population (7.4%) with a relative risk of 3.9%. This association of HLA-B18 with AA was independent of the origin of patients, sex, age of onset and type of alopecia areata.

Genetic screening for gynecological cancer: where are we heading?

The landscape of cancer genetics in gynecological oncology is rapidly changing. The traditional family history-based approach has limitations and misses >50% mutation carriers. This is now being replaced by population-based approaches. The need for changing the clinical paradigm from family history-based to population-based BRCA1/BRCA2 testing in Ashkenazi Jews is supported by data that demonstrate population-based BRCA1/BRCA2 testing does not cause psychological harm and is cost effective. This article covers various genetic testing strategies for gynecological cancers, including population-b…

Prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection for glycogen storage disease type III using polymorphic DNA markers.

Deficiency of glycogen debranching enzyme gene (AGL) causes glycogen storage disease type III (GSD-III), an autosomal recessive disease. Prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection using enzymatic methods are technically difficult and have limited ability to distinguish a carrier from an affected patient. Mutations in the AGL gene can be used for these purposes. However, the mutations identified thus far account for less than half of the total mutant alleles, and no common mutations have been detected except in North African Jews and in a rare subtype of the disease (GSD-IIIb). Our recent identif…

"Poverty, piety, and pride": The acceptance of poverty in the American Ultraorthodox Jewish community.

In the present study, we delved into the personal and societal impacts of poverty in the low-income Ultraorthodox Jewish communities of Williamsburg, Borough Park, Lakewood, and Passaic along the East Coast of the United States. Based on 44 interviews with individuals who live in poverty, three main themes were found. The first revolved around issues of identity unique to Ultraorthodox society, characterized by deliberate segregation, the preservation of tradition, and a sense of moral superiority. The second theme revolved around the fact that these values/goals create challenges for people w

Homecoming Rainbows: Queer Jewish Blessings Creating Safe Spaces for LGBTQ+ Individuals.

The concept of "home" holds dual significance for LGBTQ+ individuals. It can be a sanctuary, nurturing comfort with identities and aiding in coming out. However, it can also be a place of hostility, reinforcing LGBTQ+ prejudice. Similarly, home preserves family traditions and sustains Jewish identity and practice, but by performing rituals and ceremonies at home, it can also reflect antisemitic attitudes and expressions present in the broader society. This study demonstrates this queer-Jewish juxtapose by presenting a textual analysis of four queer Jewish blessings dedicated to marking and est

The Limits of Professional Identity: A Lesson From My Grandfather.

My grandfather was a prominent Jewish physician in Nazi Germany who escaped the Holocaust with his family but nevertheless came to a tragic end. As I, an American family physician, learned more about him, I was surprised by how much I identified with him. I was struck by how his success in his career had not been matched in other areas of his life, leaving him little to fall back on when his professional status was taken away. My grandfather's story has given me insights about him, my family, and myself and has taught me important lessons about the balance between professional and personal lif

"Yes, My Uncle, I'll Do Whatever You Say": Experiences of Israeli Muslim Arab Children During Forensic Interviews Following Child Sexual Abuse.

Children from Arab society in Israel have been overlooked in previous studies and efforts in the area of forensic interviews. The current study provides an in-depth thematic analysis of 30 forensic interviews with Israeli Muslim Arab children following child sexual abuse (CSA), all conducted by Arab forensic interviewers. In multicultural Israeli society, Muslim Arabs make up 18% of the population. In addition to the religious and cultural difference, this minority is involved in an ongoing conflict with the majority Jewish society in Israel and tends to have low trust of government authoritie
