Prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in workers from a fishnet factory in Thailand.

We determined the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) at a fishnet factory in order to discern the possible associated risk factors at this type of workplace. The 662 workers were interviewed then physically examined. The prevalence of CTS was 14.5%, which is significantly higher than in the general population. Workers directly involved in the production of fishnets had a significantly higher risk of CTS than the factory's office workers or housemaids (odds ratio = 1.84; range, 1.03-3.29; 95% CI, p = 0.049). There was no association between the length of employment in the factory with C

The correlation between work environment and the occurrence of cervicobrachial symptoms.

The correlation between symptoms from the neck and upper extremities and some individual and work-related factors was analyzed in 2814 industrial workers. Physical stress by type of job was the factor most strongly correlated with ongoing cervicobrachial symptoms. Symptoms from the neck and upper extremities were twice as common in workers who used vibrating hand tools. Mental stress at the onset of the symptoms was associated with an increased prevalence of trapezius myalgia and with lateral humeral epicondylitis and "radial tunnel syndrome" in the dominant arm. Women had about double the rat

[Carboxyhemoglobinemia caused by dichloromethane exposure with dermatologic effects].

In seven winter seasons a young watchmaker was severely disabled by the development of swelling and reddening of the skin, blistering and paraesthesiae affecting his hands. Hospital examination led to a diagnosis of "Raynaud syndrome of undetermined origin". Treatment with corticosteroids was unsuccessful. Not until the young man changed his job did the disorder disappear for good. Investigations at his place of work revealed that the man had inhaled dichloromethane fumes (methylenchloride; CH2Cl2) while cleaning watch parts in a small room that was not ventilated during the winter months. Exposure to rodents and rodent-borne viruses among persons with elevated occupational risk.

Persons who have frequent contact with rodents as part of their occupation may be at increased risk of exposure to rodent-borne viruses such as Sin Nombre virus (SNV), the agent of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, and Whitewater Arroyo virus (WWA), a New World arenavirus. Eighty-one persons with possible occupational exposure to rodents completed questionnaires and provided specimens for serologic testing. Seventy-two participants reported handling rodents as part of their job. The mean total number of rodents handled during participants' careers was approximately 2200. IgG antibody to lymphocyt

Humoral immunodeficiencies: conferred risk of infections and benefits of immunoglobulin replacement therapy.

Primary immunodeficiency (PID) diseases result from genetic defects of the immune system that increase a patient's susceptibility to infections. The types of infections that occur in patients with PID diseases are dictated largely by the nature of the immunodeficiency, which can be defined by dysfunction of cellular or humoral defenses. An increasing number of PID diseases, including those with both cellular and humoral defects, have antibody deficiency as a major feature, and as a result can benefit from immunoglobulin replacement therapy. In fact, the most common PID diseases worldwide are a

Symptom patterns and subgrouping of schizophrenic patients: significance of negative symptoms assessed on admission.

This study subgroups schizophrenic patients based on symptoms assessed on admission and examines the validity of the subgrouping using follow-up data and other clinical outcome variables. Schizophrenic patients (n=163) from consecutive admission received ratings on the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) on admission and during a 1-year follow-up course. An exploratory graphic analysis on the admission PANSS derived four symptom dimensions: negative symptoms, disorganized thought, hostility/excitement and delusions/hallucinations. This yielded two subgroups of patients on admission, a

DOCK8 deficiency.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Previously described as an autosomal recessive form of hyper IgE syndrome, DOCK8 deficiency is now recognized as a combined immunodeficiency, with predominant dermatological manifestations. This review details overlap between DOCK8 deficiency, actin regulator actinopathies, and Tregopathies, and summarizes current treatment experience. RECENT FINDINGS: Dermatological infection and inflammation are predominant features of DOCK8 deficiency. Previous research demonstrated the importance of the actin defect in contributing to the severe and persistent viral infection that chara

DOCK8 deficiency.

The discovery that loss-of-function mutations in the gene DOCK8 are responsible for most forms of autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome and some forms of combined immunodeficiency without elevated serum IgE has led to studies into the immunopathogenesis of this disease. In this review, we relate the clinical features of this disease to studies using patients' cells and a mouse model of Dock8 deficiency, which have revealed how DOCK8 regulates T and B cell numbers and functions. The results of these studies help to explain how the absence of DOCK8 contributes to patients' susceptibility to vir

The use of continuous exposure data for predicting CTS in fish processing operators.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) remains one of the most commonly reported and studied work related musculoskeletal disorders. Categorical representations of exposures has been critical in identifying associations between risk factors and CTS, however, quantification of exposure-response relationships require using continuous exposure data. Also, few interactions between risk factors, especially between risk factor categories, have been investigated. The objectives of this study were to investigate the utility of using continuous exposure data and to identify interaction effects of risk factors, b

STAT3-Dependent Regulation of CFTR and Ciliogenesis Is Essential for Mucociliary Clearance and Innate Airway Defense in Hyper-IgE Syndrome.

Rationale: Hyper-IgE syndrome (STAT3-HIES), also known as Job's syndrome, is a rare immunodeficiency disease typically caused by dominant-negative STAT3 mutations. STAT3-HIES is characterized by chronic pulmonary infection and inflammation, suggesting impaired innate host defense. Objectives: To identify airway epithelial host defense defects caused by STAT3 mutations that, together with immune dysfunction, contribute to recurrent pulmonary infections in STAT3-HIES. Methods: STAT3-HIES sputum was analyzed for biochemical and biophysical properties. STAT3-HIES excised lungs were harvested for h

STAT3 haploinsufficiency is associated with autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome.

The autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome (AD-HIES) is a primary immunodeficiency, which originates from heterozygous missense mutations in the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) gene. It is accepted that most STAT3 variants causing AD-HIES are dominant negative. Whether haploinsufficient mutations cause a phenotype in humans is still debated. We report on a family with a heterozygous STAT3 nonsense mutation that led to rapid decay of the mutant mRNA and protein, leading to haploinsufficiency. To explore STAT3 heterozygosity, we created a Stat3 haploinsufficient (Stat3+

DOCK8 deficiency due to a deep intronic variant in two kindreds with hyper-IgE syndrome.

Dedicator of cytokinesis 8 (DOCK8) deficiency underlies the majority of cases of patients with autosomal recessive form of the hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome (HIES). Most DOCK8 mutations involve deletions and splice junction mutations that abrogate protein expression. However, a few patients whose presentation is reminiscent of DOCK8 deficiency have no identifiable mutations. Using Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), we identified a deep intronic homozygous DOCK8 variant located in intron 36 (c.4626 + 76 A > G) in two unrelated patients with features of HIES that resulted in an in-frame 75 base pai
